The Internet of Things (IoT) has always been a fascinating topic for me. My passion for it led me to create IoT World, a blog dedicated to exploring and discussing this ever-evolving technology.

Imagine a world where IoT seamlessly integrates with your life, enhancing your senses and allowing you to interact with things you otherwise couldn’t do remotely. This is the future I envision, and with each passing day, we’re getting closer to that reality.

Take smartphones, for instance. These IoT devices have come a long way in just a few years. Applications that were once thought impossible are now commonplace, and we can accomplish tasks in a fraction of the time it used to take.

Now, let’s consider the powerful combination of IoT, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Generative AI. This trio has the potential to revolutionize the way we live and work. From generating realistic text and images to performing complex tasks with ease, AI-driven IoT devices can become our personal assistants, making us more productive than ever.

I dream of a day when our everyday routines are programmed and automated, freeing us to focus on new experiences and challenges. Imagine waking up to a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, your home already at the ideal temperature, and your favorite playlist queued up, all without lifting a finger. This level of automation would allow us to spend more time on the things that truly matter.

Revolutionizing Visual Content Creation with Midjourney and ChatGPT

Introduction

Visual content is integral to digital marketing, advertising, and social media presence. It’s no secret that using high-quality images can significantly enhance the effectiveness of your content.

However, finding the right photos can be challenging, especially when you need specific images for your posters or social media platforms.

After trying various options, such as free stock photos and event images, I stumbled upon a fantastic combination that changed the game: Midjourney, an image generation program, and ChatGPT, a powerful AI language model.

Here’s my experience with these tools and some examples of the fantastic images they helped me create.

The Struggle for the Right Images

Finding the perfect photos for my marketing materials had been an uphill battle. I tried using free stock photos and images from events, but they didn’t quite capture the essence of what I wanted. I experimented with Bing Image Creator, but the results were disappointing, as it failed to generate realistic images of people in action.

Discovering Midjourney

My search for a better solution led me to Midjourney, an image generation program that promised to create unique, realistic images based on user input. Intrigued, I decided to give it a try. After subscribing to the service, I began exploring its features and was immediately impressed by its capabilities.

Leveraging ChatGPT for Better Prompts

While Midjourney had immense potential, providing the program with accurate and descriptive prompts to generate the desired images was essential. That’s where ChatGPT came into play. Using this AI language model, I could generate clear and concise prompts to guide Midjourney in creating visually striking images that matched my requirements.

The Perfect Collaboration

This powerful combination of Midjourney and ChatGPT revolutionized my content creation process. I could now generate images that captured the right emotions and looked realistic and engaging. My posters and social media content finally had the visual impact I had always wanted.

The best part is I’m not the only one noticing the difference. My social media engagement has been through the roof. I’ve even had some folks ask me if I hired a professional photographer. Ha! Little do they know, I, Midjourney, and ChatGPT are working our magic.

How Blogs Have Changed

In the early days, Blogs are purely written articles. The main reason is the Internet was relatively slow.

I remember when we are using dial-up and downloading an article with images can be very frustrating. The photos appear slowly on our screen; at times, they will “hang” and not be downloaded fully.

But as the speed of the Internet progresses, we can now view richer multimedia content, from audio and images to videos.

And with that, Blogs have changed from purely written content to a mixture of content.

Earlier, people perceived video would take over the written content, but it’s false. There are pros and cons of having to consume video.

Some people don’t like to consume video at the office because you need to switch on the sound, or sometimes it’s very difficult to scan through the overall content; unlike written content, you can quickly browse through the whole topic and focus on the ones that you want to read.

But if some people prefer audio, you might want to do podcasting. The fantastic thing about podcasts is that people will listen to your voice, and you seem to be talking to them directly – everywhere and anytime.

However, in 2023, Blogs have changed – bloggers started to combine several media into their blogs – photos, presentation slides, podcasts, and videos. It can be easily embedded into the blogs.

Morning – Most Productive Time

When do you feel most productive?

I woke up early – about 5.15am or 5.30 am. After Suboh prayers, I reached office about 7.00 am if not much traffic or 7.30 am latest.

This is my most productive time when there’s no one at the office.

I prepared and published all my social media contents such as TikTok videos or FB/IG Stories and Reels.

My computer browser will open up with ChatGPT as the default home.

ChatGPT is my saviour for my copy writing and content ideas. No longer my social media post will be lacking interesting call to action scripts.

I am able to write a couple of Blogs including Professional and Personal Blog articles.

I always used Canva for the posters. Previously I will use the free stock photos to decorate my poster, but now I am using Bing Image Creator (using AI) to create them.

With the help of ChatGPT to create the image prompt for the Bing Image Creator, I can have better photos.

If I am lazy, I will just use the images for my TikTok videos.

By 9.00 am, I will share my selected Blog articles to my WhatsApp Groups. Since I have two mailing lists – Mailchimp and Payhip, I will share similar or different contents.

That’s how I spent every morning if I don’t have external meetings.

Actually this morning routine, I have only started since January 2023 and I found it to be most productive time.

From Zero to an IoT Thought Leader. When does it all start?

Here’s the story.

One of my staff bumped into me, and he mentioned, “Congratulations, Dr. Mazlan, I saw your name as one of the IoT Thought Leaders.

I was very shocked and asked. “Where did you get the news?” and he said, “I saw in one of the Internet reports.

He gave me the link, and I quickly viewed the report from Onalytica entitled “The Internet of Tings 2014 – Top 100 Thought Leaders.” Wow! It was a pleasant surprise.

A couple of weeks earlier, I was very depressed and frustrated when my boss did not approve my application to attend IoT Asia 2014. I applied for the trip with two of my staff to attend the first IoT event in the region, yet only two of my staff applications were approved but not mine.

Our organization started the work on IoT almost two years earlier, and I thought this would be my best opportunity to hear from the industry leaders.

But the news that my staff brought to me was very unexpected. I wondered – how do I get to be selected by a prestigious organization like Onalytica?

The news spread very fast in the organization, with many people congratulating me. And one of them is the HR Vice President; she congratulated, “Dr. Mazlan, you are now a Thought Leader. That’s an amazing achievement!

But since I have never bothered to know what a “Thought Leader is,” I began to wonder what I did to gain that recognition? And what exactly is a Thought Leader?

How Onalytica Picked the Top 100 IoT Thought Leaders

Onalytica took in all Twitter conversations using the hashtags #IoT and #InternetOfThings and created a network of the top stakeholders discussing the subject. The network diagram of the top 100 is shown below.

I was thrilled to be ranked No. 20th on the list with Kevin Ashton (Father of IoT ranked 11th). And, of course, very proud to be the only Malaysian (or probably Asian) on the list!

But really, how do I reach that stage? Is it by accident? In a way, most probably the answer is yes, but I didn’t realize that the things I did were actually how a Thought Leader should do – by influencing others.

It started probably 1 or 2 years earlier when my team was working on a research area called Wireless Sensor Network, 6LoWPAN (IPv6 Low Powered Area Network), and Internet of Things (IoT).

And during 2012 to 2014, I was a frequent social media user on LinkedIn and Twitter. Whatever I read on IoT topics, I will share this on Twitter and LinkedIn and use that hashtag #IoT. This includes sharing my thoughts about the industry in IoT.

This was when my circle of influence widened with more Twitter users following my Tweets. That’s how these Tweets are captured and analyzed by Onalytica.

The Start of an IoT Thought Leadership

Two years later, in 2016, I was the first Malaysian IoT Speaker in IoT Asia 2016 (“Issues and Challenges of Deploying a Smart Citizen Engagement Solution,” IoT Asia 2016, Singapore Expo, 30-31 March 201). The same event was when my boss rejected my application to attend in 2014. This time, the host invited me to speak with all expenses paid.

That was the beginning of the Thought Leadership journey, whereby I was invited to many speaking engagements as Keynote Speaker, Invited Speaker, TEDx Speaker, and many others. I created an IoT Blog called “IoT World” which became my official channel to share my thoughts and knowledge.

Other than the recognition from Onalytica (Onalytica Report can be downloaded here), I was ranked among Top 50 Global Thought Leaders on the Internet of Things (February 2019) and Digital Disruption (October 2019) by Thinkers360, Top 50 Most Impactful Smart Cities Leaders by World CSR Congress 2017, ranked Top 10 in IoT Top 100 Influencers by Postscapes 2017 & 2018,
