Six roller-coaster years have unfurled since FAVORIOT burst onto the IoT startup scene.

During this period, its tenacious team navigated through a sea of challenges, starting from a point of zero revenue, grappling with hefty operational costs, and hustling hard to attract their initial customers.

Embarking on a startup journey isn’t a sprint; it’s a grueling marathon to a remote and arduous destination dotted with daunting hills and towering mountains.

For the founder of FAVORIOT, uncertainty isn’t a stranger but a constant companion, silently questioning the startup’s survivability year after year.

While success stories of other startups – from inception to IPOs – are loudly broadcasted, the tales of numerous startups that didn’t make it are quietly buried in the shadows.

FAVORIOT, founded on February 20, 2017, and operational from April 1 that year, has had its fair share of close calls, challenges, and changes in its lineup, with many original members handing over the baton to newcomers.

The journey included developing “Raqib”, an IoT product meticulously designed for monitoring the elderly and pilgrims.

Despite significant investment and effort, the first year yielded no revenue.

What went wrong?

The situation further compounded when the Malaysian Hajj was delayed for two years due to the global health crisis, sidelining the freshly minted product.

Frustration also mounted in the early days as curious minds approached for knowledge but not for purchase.

Many wanted to understand IoT or explore collaborations, yet no one seemed ready to invest or even request a quote.

It felt as though people wanted to glean insights without giving back, leaving the founder feeling exploited and undervalued.

Initially, the team was hesitant about IoT training, assuming self-learning was sufficient. Recognizing the misjudgment, they course-corrected and launched commercial IoT courses in late 2021.

Despite the early turbulence, FAVORIOT’s user base swelled from a mere 20 to a whopping 7200 across 121 countries.

Its brand presence strengthened, positioning it as a top search result on Google.

Navigating through the notorious “Valley of Death” – a stage where many startups stumble and fall without gaining traction or customers – FAVORIOT stood resilient.

Past rejections from investors and accelerators didn’t deter them; instead, it emboldened their resolve to knock on more doors, seeking partnerships and venture capital to fuel expansion.

As they raise a toast to their sixth anniversary, the FAVORIOT team wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude.

Embarking on a venture within the burgeoning realm of the Internet of Things (IoT), my team and I at MIMOS, an R&D Agency falling under the aegis of MOSTI, excitedly delved into the development of wireless technologies, with a particular emphasis on the then-nascent 6LoWPAN standards.

We were vigorously working on creating novel IoT applications, albeit with little consideration for their market viability, business models, or potential customer base.

Transition to a New Landscape

When I transitioned into the telecommunications sector after my stint at MIMOS, the challenges of running an IoT business began to unfold, underscoring that theories and practical applications don’t always align seamlessly.

As we launched our IoT platform under the Favoriot banner in 2017, we were buoyed by optimism, envisioning a market eager and ready to adopt IoT at the first opportunity. However, reality proved to be markedly different.

Unraveling the Seven Mistakes

Amid the early stages, we found ourselves trapped by seven critical oversights that hindered our progress:

  4. Customer Onboarding Issues: Prospective clients often needed clarification and were uncertain about initiating their IoT journey and understanding its implications for their business.   5. Budgeting Hurdles: Decision-making processes could have been more active with multiple stakeholders involved. The purpose of this app was to provide a platform for users, like students or residents, to report issues to relevant authorities, effectively acting as “sensors” in their communities.

We stumbled, we fell, we learned. Here’s a human recap of the tough spots we navigated through:

In a world brimming with software applications, it’s easy for IT companies to mirror what we built with Favorsense, primarily since it doesn’t rely on bespoke IoT devices.

SaaS Transition Woes

Integrating our solution into the ingrained daily processes of local councils was no small feat. These councils often cling to their legacy systems, necessitating a flexible SaaS solution willing to bend and integrate without a fuss.

Navigating Red Oceans

With an array of similar, albeit not identical, solutions floating around, convincing customers to jump ship and embrace the new was an uphill battle.

Procurement Maze

.Venturing into smart city solutions introduces one to a tangled web of procurement processes, stakeholders, and budget constraints, making introducing a new product a complex dance.

Stand-Alone Dilemma

A solution solely focusing on citizen engagement doesn’t necessarily woo in tender or procurement processes; it often needs to be part of a larger project rollout to shine truly.

Floodgate Fears

Organizations often need to be more open to creating open channels for complaints and reports. No one wants to unleash a torrent of negativity, yet there’s a fine line between losing control and nipping potential PR disasters in the bud.

Legacy System Headaches

Old IT systems are notoriously stubborn and resistant to integration with newer, shinier solutions. The transition often demands substantial upgrades and a hefty financial investment.

Navigating the Challenges of Building an IoT Solution and the Invaluable Lessons

When we embarked on our startup journey in 2017, little did we know that our first IoT product, Raqib, would undergo such a transformative journey itself. Initially designed for the senior citizen market, we soon realized that Raqib had a far more significant role to play – assisting those embarking on the spiritual journey of Hajj. The Hajj market presented a unique set of challenges and opportunities that would test our mettle and reshape our product.

The Hajj Market: A Unique Opportunity

Our decision to target the Hajj market was informed by compelling reasons:

  1. Vast Pilgrimage Numbers: With over 2.3 million people performing Hajj annually, including around 30,000 from Malaysia, the demand for a comprehensive monitoring solution was evident.
  2. Diverse Language and Culture: The diverse backgrounds of pilgrims posed communication challenges during emergencies, making the need for a reliable solution even more critical.
  3. Navigation Challenges: The crowded nature of Hajj, coupled with the unfamiliarity of foreign places, often led to pilgrims going missing.
  4. Health Concerns: The harsh climate conditions during Hajj, with extreme heat and dust, raised the need for immediate assistance in case of sickness or fainting.
  5. Constant Monitoring: Many pilgrims travel with elderly family members, necessitating continuous care and monitoring for peace of mind.
  6. Crowded Peak Periods: During the peak Hajj period, which spans 5–6 days, crowded areas made it exceptionally challenging to locate missing individuals who often dressed similarly.
  7. Tent Confusion: Similar-looking tents in places like Mina added to the challenge of finding one’s way back.

The Challenges We Faced

Building an IoT solution for Hajj, Raqib, was a journey marked by formidable challenges:

  1. Device Functionality: Determining the core parameters to monitor was a puzzle. Some users prioritized health vital signs, while others sought location tracking for safety.
  2. Network and Roaming: Raqib relied on 2G networks with voice capability, and securing M2M sim cards with roaming capability was a hurdle due to cost and limited availability.
  3. Trial Period: The seasonal nature of Hajj required us to conduct trials at the Hajj site itself. We overcame initial issues through partnerships and personal testing.
  4. User Behavior: Ensuring users consistently wore Raqib and addressing challenges like water resistance and battery life was crucial for accurate data.
  5. Go-to-Market Strategy: Deciding the target audience and business model was complex. Should we sell to Hajj authorities, travel agencies, or end-users? CAPEX-based models clashed with Hajj’s once-a-year occurrence.
  6. Global Expansion: To succeed, Raqib needed a global market. Testing the sim card’s roaming capability across different countries, from Saudi Arabia to India and beyond, became a priority.

Important Lessons Learned

Our journey with Raqib taught us invaluable lessons:

  1. Adaptability: Be ready to pivot and adapt to new markets and challenges when opportunities arise.
  2. In-Field Testing: For solutions tied to specific events, conducting trials in the real environment is essential for refining the product.
  3. User-Centric Design: Understand user behavior and preferences to ensure consistent product usage.
  4. Market Diversification: Explore broader markets to sustain a seasonal product, but ensure your infrastructure supports it.
  5. Collaboration: Forge partnerships and collaborations to address technical and logistical hurdles.
  6. Continuous Innovation: In the IoT realm, staying ahead in terms of technology and connectivity is crucial for success.
