In 2019, we officially launched our self-developed IoT services with high hopes. The FAVORIOT IoT platform was our pride and joy—a product we believed could transform how data is collected, processed, and visualized. Yet, reality hit us hard. No one wanted to use it.

I still remember the sting of those early days. We offered our platform for free to the first ten customers to gain traction, but even that didn’t work. “Why doesn’t anyone want to use our platform?” I would ask myself almost every night.

It wasn’t just a passing thought but an all-consuming question that kept me awake. Was our product flawed? Did we miss something crucial?

The truth was more complicated to accept than I imagined. The issue wasn’t with our product’s functionality or potential—it was the lack of understanding about IoT itself. People didn’t know how to use an IoT platform because they didn’t know what IoT could do for them. This was not just a technical problem but a knowledge gap that needed bridging.

Planting Seeds of IoT Awareness in Universities

I’ve always believed that education is the foundation of progress. As an Industry Advisory Panel member at several universities, I saw an opportunity to address this knowledge gap. In meetings with lecturers and deans, I passionately advocated for curriculum changes.

Can we really compete with giants like AWS and Azure?” I often asked myself. The thought was daunting. Competing against well-established platforms felt like an insurmountable challenge. We knew that many people didn’t know who we were, and there were plenty who doubted the capabilities of a small team attempting something so ambitious. But despite the naysayers, we pressed on. Deep down, we were confident in our technology’s potential and our ability to deliver something meaningful.

A Bold Move: Offering the Platform for Free

By 2019, we decided to take a bold step—offering the Favoriot IoT Platform to the public for free. “Maybe this will be the best way to attract attention and build an early user base,” I thought. It seemed like a logical approach. But the reality didn’t match our expectations. The response was underwhelming, to say the least. Only a handful of people showed interest, and our efforts didn’t yield the results we hoped for.

Finding a New Strategy: Education

Sitting down with the team, I voiced my concerns. “We need to do more. This isn’t enough. We must find a better way to introduce our platform.” The team brainstormed tirelessly, and that’s when the idea of offering IoT courses emerged. It was a lightbulb moment. We realised that one of the best ways to attract users was through education—teaching people about IoT while simultaneously showcasing the capabilities of our platform.

But what if no one registers for the courses?” The doubt lingered. Investing time and resources into something that might not succeed was nerve-wracking. Still, we decided to take the plunge. We structured the courses so that participants could learn the fundamentals of IoT and get hands-on experience with the Favoriot IoT Platform.

Success Through IoT Education

Alhamdulillah, the effort paid off. The response to the courses was beyond encouraging. Participants appreciated the knowledge they gained and began to explore our platform in more significant numbers. It was a turning point for us. From those early courses, word began to spread, and the Favoriot IoT Platform started gaining traction. The numbers grew steadily; today, I’m proud to say that we have over 9,343 users from 111 countries. Seeing the global reach of something we built from scratch fills me with immense pride.

The Beginning: An Empty Page and a Blank Canvas

Starting a Medium blog is like looking at a blank page.

It’s intimidating.

You have no audience, no reputation, and no guarantee that your words will resonate with anyone. Similarly, building a startup begins with a blank canvas.

You have an idea – a vision – but no customers, no revenue, and no market presence.

I remember the early days of FAVORIOT.

We had a big dream: to help businesses and cities integrate IoT into their operations.

But dreams are just dreams without action.

Writing my first article on Medium felt the same.

I had thoughts swirling in my mind, but translating them into coherent words that others would find valuable was daunting.

Defining Your “Why”

Just as FAVORIOT’s first IoT platform had limited features but solved a critical problem for a niche audience, my initial articles aimed to deliver value to a small group of readers.

The goal wasn’t perfection but progression.

In the startup world, your product is nothing without customers.

Similarly, in writing, your articles mean little without an audience.

Once you’ve found your footing, the next challenge is scaling.

For FAVORIOT, scaling meant expanding our platform’s capabilities, entering new markets, and forming global partnerships.

For my Medium writing, scaling meant increasing my output, diversifying my topics, and reaching a broader audience.

But scaling comes with its own challenges.

In a startup, you risk losing focus as you try to do too much too quickly. The same is true for writing.

At one point, I tried writing about topics outside my expertise, thinking it would attract more readers. It backfired.

I learned that scaling isn’t just about doing more; it’s about doing more of what you do best.

Both writing and building a startup require passion.

Without it, you’ll struggle to persevere through the inevitable challenges.

I’m deeply passionate about IoT and its potential to transform industries and improve lives.

Sitting in my quiet office one evening, I glanced at the stack of notebooks on my desk.

I realised it wasn’t just the hard work or expertise but the belief. It was the Law of Attraction.

Years ago, I questioned my purpose before FAVORIOT was even an idea.

I have worked in corporate environments, government agencies, and universities. Each role taught me valuable lessons, but something was missing — a sense of fulfilment, the feeling of building something from scratch.

While reading about entrepreneurs who transformed their dreams into reality one evening, a question struck me.

What if I could build something that truly impacts the world?” I asked myself aloud.

The thought lingered in my mind. I started visualising it.

As I sit here reflecting on my journey with Favoriot, a quote comes to mind: You are the painter of your life, and your thoughts are the brushstrokes. It’s a simple metaphor, but it holds profound truth.

Over the years, I’ve realised that every decision I’ve made, every path I’ve chosen, and every challenge I’ve faced have all been part of the larger canvas of my life.

The way I approached those moments — my thoughts, my attitude — were the brushstrokes that created the picture I’m looking at now.

The journey to creating Favoriot was never a straight line, and I certainly didn’t have the luxury of knowing what the final picture would look like.

But looking back, I can see how each experience, each minor stroke, came together to form something much bigger than I ever imagined.

It all started with a desire to create something meaningful. I had spent much of my career working in government, academia, and large corporations. At each of these stages, I gathered knowledge and experience.

But deep down, I knew there was more I wanted to do.

I didn’t just want to be part of someone else’s vision; I wanted to paint my own.

That’s when the idea of Favoriot started to take shape in my mind.

Technology, especially the Internet of Things (IoT), has always fascinated me. It was a concept that could revolutionise industries and impact lives.

But at the time, many people didn’t fully understand its potential.

I remember sitting in meetings where I’d explain IoT only to be met with blank stares or polite nods. It was frustrating, but I kept reminding myself that not everyone could see the vision I had in my mind.

Others may not have understood the picture I was painting, but I knew the bigger picture would eventually emerge if I stayed focused on the details.

Starting Favoriot was my way of putting my thoughts into action. I knew that to make an impact, I had to stop waiting for the perfect moment and start making deliberate brushstrokes.

The first few strokes were shaky—there were moments of doubt, times when things didn’t go as planned, and periods when progress felt slow.

One of the things I’ve learned along this journey is that you can’t always control the challenges you face, but you can control how you respond to them.

For instance, when we faced the challenge of scaling Favoriot, I could have panicked or played it safe. But instead, I chose to see it as an opportunity—a chance to paint something new, something more significant.
