This category captures my reflections on writing as an art and a discipline. Articles like Why I Felt That Writing is an Adventure and Why Writing on Medium is Similar to Mountain Hiking explore how writing mirrors life’s challenges, requiring persistence, creativity, and self-discovery.

I also delved into practical advice for writers, such as How New Writers Can Attract More Readers and The Art of Consistency for an Entrepreneur,” offering insights gained from my struggles and triumphs. Through these articles, I aimed to inspire budding writers to embrace their unique voices, overcome self-doubt, and find joy in the process rather than just the outcome.

2. Startup Survival Stories

As the CEO of Favoriot, I’ve faced numerous challenges in building a startup from scratch. Writing about these experiences helped me document and share key lessons with aspiring entrepreneurs. Articles like Favoriot and PT Lima Dua Satu Indonesia Join Forces to Boost Indonesia’s 100 Smart Cities Movement showcased real-world applications of Favoriot’s work. At the same time, About Favoriot — Part 12: The Dream of M&A Exit highlighted strategic growth milestones.

Additionally, pieces like How Favoriot Became the Top IoT Platform in Malaysia provided a behind-the-scenes look at the grit and strategy of scaling a tech business. My accounts, such as The Day I Overcame the Fear of Public Speaking and Became a Keynote Speaker,” blended entrepreneurial lessons with personal growth narratives.

Articles like Understanding Industry 4.0 and Industrial Revolution 4.0 and The Crucial Role of IoT in Environmental Measurement aimed to simplify complex topics for a broader audience.

In addition to educational content, I shared practical applications of IoT, such as How IoT Projects in Universities Can Become a Commercial Success and How Favoriot Caters to Different IoT Developer Needs.” These pieces catered to both tech professionals and curious readers looking to understand the role of IoT in everyday life.

Why It Matters:
Technology can seem intimidating, but breaking it into relatable concepts makes it accessible. These articles helped bridge the gap between innovation and application, inspiring readers to explore IoT’s possibilities.

4. Influencer’s Journey

As someone who actively engages on social media and other digital platforms, I explored the challenges and opportunities of being an influencer in the tech and writing spheres. Articles like The Art of Growing on X and How My Medium Followers Are 3X Lower but Earned 200X Than My TikTok reflected my efforts to balance authenticity with growth strategies.

In this category, I also touched on broader topics like the ethical dilemmas of social media (How Influencers Fake Their Way to the Top) and personal struggles, such as managing online fatigue (How to Overcome Social Media Fatigue).

Why It Matters:
Navigating the digital world is a universal challenge. By sharing my experiences, I provided readers with relatable insights into building an online presence while staying true to their values.

5. Personal Reflections and Motivational Pieces

Some of my most heartfelt articles were rooted in personal stories and life lessons. Pieces like The Silent Struggles of Researchers and The Power of Personal Stories captured moments of vulnerability and growth.

I also wrote motivational articles like Why You Should Write From the Heart and Every Failure Was a Step Towards Your Success. These were intended to uplift readers and encourage them to persevere through their challenges.

Personal reflections have a universal appeal. They allow readers to connect with the writer on a deeper level, finding comfort and inspiration in shared human experiences.

Key Takeaways from My Writing Themes

  1. Diverse Interests Drive Engagement:
My articles covered various topics, from writing and IoT to entrepreneurship and personal growth. This diversity kept my content fresh and appealing to different audience segments.
  2. Authenticity Resonates:
Authenticity was at the heart of my writing, whether sharing technical knowledge or personal anecdotes. Readers appreciate honesty and relatability, which I strived to bring to every piece.
  3. Consistency is Crucial:
Publishing regularly helped me maintain a steady presence on Medium. This consistency improved my writing skills and strengthened my connection with readers.
  4. Storytelling Enhances Impact:
Weaving narratives into my articles, whether about Favoriot’s journey or my struggles, made them more engaging. Stories create emotional connections that facts alone cannot.
  5. Reflection Fuels Growth:
Writing about my experiences forced me to reflect on my journey, learn from mistakes, and celebrate progress. This process was as rewarding for me as it was valuable to my readers.

Conclusion

Writing on Medium in 2024 was more than just a creative outlet; it was a journey of self-discovery, connection, and growth.

By exploring themes of writing, entrepreneurship, technology, influence, and personal reflection, I enriched my understanding and touched the lives of readers worldwide.

Looking ahead, I aim to deepen these connections and continue sharing stories that inform, inspire, and ignite change.

After all, every word written is a step forward in an endless adventure.

Here’s Why My Top 5 Articles in 2024 Earned the Most

YEAR 2024 STORIES

Analyse to get better results in 2025

I’ve always been curious about what makes some articles perform better than others.

So, when I looked at my top earners, a few patterns jumped out at me.

Let me walk you through what I noticed.

1. Relevant and Practical Topics

The first article on the list, “Five (5) Best Reasons Why I Chose Gumroad to Sell My eBooks,” wasn’t surprising. It speaks directly to content creators like me who want to sell digital products. It’s straightforward, helpful, and, most importantly, actionable. That’s a formula that works.

Similarly, “Avoid These 10 Mistakes and Become a Better Writer in 2024” was a hit because, let’s face it, who doesn’t want to improve their writing?

Tackling common mistakes is something almost every writer can relate to.

That relatability gave it an edge.

2. Timing is Everything

I realised that timing plays a huge role. Articles like “Avoid These 10 Mistakes…” and “Lessons Learned Before and After Joining Medium Partner” were published around the start of the year.

That’s when people are most motivated to learn, grow, and try new things.

It’s like catching a wave at just the right moment.

3. Actionable Tips Win Hearts

I’ve learned that people love actionable advice — stuff they can use right away.

Writing about practical steps, like optimising writing habits or selling eBooks, clicks with readers.

They see immediate value in it. Articles like “Five (5) Best Reasons Why I Chose Gumroad” stand out because they’re not just informative but useful.

4. Engagement Makes a Difference

This part surprised me.

Some articles didn’t just get views — they got a lot of reads. For example, the Gumroad article had 184 reads out of 349 views.

That’s over 50%! It tells me the people who clicked on it stuck around to read the whole thing.

Compare that to other articles that might have more views but fewer reads — it’s clear which ones connected with people.

5. Storytelling Works Wonders

I’ve always loved weaving personal stories into my writing, and readers seem to enjoy that, too. “A Letter to My Younger Self” is a great example.

It’s reflective and emotional; I think people appreciate that human touch.

It’s not just another “how-to” article — it’s a glimpse into my journey.

6. Short and Sweet Wins

Looking at the data, I noticed the sweet spot for article length is around 3–5 minutes.

These are long enough to deliver value but short enough to fit into a busy reader’s day. Articles like “Avoid These 10 Mistakes…” and “Lessons Learned…” are perfect examples.

They pack a punch without dragging on.

7. Niche Matters

Some articles do well because they speak directly to a specific group.

Take “Lessons Learned Before and After Joining Medium Partner,” for instance. It’s aimed at Medium writers, who are probably searching for that content.

I think finding the right niche is half the battle.

8. Eye-Catching Titles

I’ll admit that titles matter more than I used to think. Something like “Tripling My Medium December Earnings: When I Implement These Amazing Things” immediately grabs attention.

Words like “tripling” and “amazing” spark curiosity, and curiosity gets clicks.

Looking back, it’s clear that the combination of timing, practical value, personal voice, and targeting the right audience made these articles stand out.

And while I can’t always predict which ones will resonate the most, seeing these patterns emerge is fascinating.

Writing is as much about experimenting as it is about connecting with readers; I’m always learning.

Below are the top 5 highest earned articles in 2024.

The First Quarter of 2024 Medium Earnings Report — This is What I Found Out

EARNINGS REPORT

Learning how the Medium algorithm works.

This is the time to check out the earnings stats.

You will be reading more from others to understand how the writing performs and how the Medium algorithm works.

I have always said that Medium works in very mysterious ways.

Some expected stories earned a lot more than the rest, while some that you expected to be of higher quality — flopped.

I tried to gather data from the first quarter of 2024 and see if there was any conclusion I could draw from these statistics.

January 2024
– Views = 37K
– Reads = 724
– Total Earnings = $68.55
– Earnings per Read = $0.095
– Highest Earning Article = Lessons Learned Before and After Joining Medium Partner ($12.62)

February 2024
– Views = 52K
– Reads = 828
– Total Earnings = $30.87
– Earnings per Read = $0.037
– Highest Earning Article = Utilising AI Assistance to Analyze My Medium Articles (Discover My Findings) ($5.13)

March 2024 (Updated till the end of March 31st)
– Views = 24K
– Reads = 803
– Total Earnings = $40.49
– Earnings per read = $0.05
– Highest Earning Article = Why the Success of Smart City Projects Depends on People and Talent ($4.69)

Note: Many writers, including Lea Bardot, tried to understand Medium’s algorithm, including the earnings per read ratio. But I guess, referring to my last three months’ stats, the earning per-read ratio can’t be used as a reference.

I still believe Medium gave very simple tips on gaining more earnings but will not give the exact formula. It all depends on the number of clappers, highlighters, commenters, and followers after reading the article.

Photo by Austin Distel on Unsplash

High views vs Low Reads — Do not correlate.

You might wonder why my views reached thousands, yet my reads are less than 1,000.

It does not correlate, right?

It boils down to how I share my stories with my mailing list (more than 8,000).

Imported Mailing List

Please note that most are email subscribers, which I imported from another mailing list, not a Medium member.

The reason is that I have collected emails from different blogs, but finally, I decided to use only a single blog to share any of my posts. I have migrated and hosted this blog on Medium.

Since most of the mailing list subscribers are non-Medium members, I decided to make the story non-paywall.

Whenever I published and enabled the email notifications, thousands of them probably received them instantly and might not click the link to Medium. However, Medium still counts them as “views”.

The actual number of “reads” is from Medium members.

Change of Posting Strategy — Paywall Stories with Friend’s Link

However, in the middle of March, I decided to change my strategy.

I decided to enable all the articles as a paywall (only Members can view them). However, non-members can view it by clicking “friend’s link,” which bypasses the paywall. However, I will not be able to earn anything from them.

In this way, I will be able to observe whether the people who receive the email notifications really want to read the story by clicking that link.

Thus, the impact of the stats for the number of views will be more realistic in figures.

Photo by Mufid Majnun on Unsplash

This is What I Found Out

  • Make all your stories behind a paywall and let non-members click the friend’s link. This will show how effective or attractive your article is.
  • Since my mailing list combines information from various sources, some will start to unsubscribe because the content might not be related to their interests, and some will find the email notifications “too much” for them.
  • However, combining into a single mailing list reduces my work posting different content. Now, I can reach 25,000 email subscribers for free instead of paying more for Mailchimp or any other Email Service Provider.
  • I will only enable the mail notifications if stories are worth sharing with the 8,000 email subscribers. I will only enable them sometimes. This way, they might feel free of different topics that might not be of interest to them.

I would like to hear your strategy for using paywall or non-paywall features, including when you enable email notifications. Kindly share in the comments section.

3 Things Why This Article Gained the Highest Traction

Writing with Impact

My Blueprint for Writing That Wins Hearts and Minds

Wanna learn the top three things? Photo from Pexel.

As we enter the month of March 2024, I find myself reflecting on the past year with a mix of emotions.

Writing has always been my passion, a way to express my thoughts, share knowledge, and connect with others.

Yet, as I perused my analytics from 2023, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment.

Despite pouring my heart and soul into over a hundred articles, the majority barely made a ripple in the vast ocean of digital content.

It was disheartening, to say the least.

But I’m not one to wallow in self-pity. Instead, I see this as a valuable learning opportunity, a chance to pivot and evolve.

So, I took a deep dive into what went wrong and emerged with insights that I believe not only transformed my approach to writing but also resonated with a wider audience, catapulting this article “Avoid These 10 Mistakes and Become a Better Writer in 2024” to the pinnacle of success on Medium.

View at Medium.com

1 — Emotional Resonance – The Heartbeat of Connection

The first revelation struck me like a bolt of lightning!

My writing lacked emotional depth.

In my quest to disseminate knowledge, I had neglected the human element, the very essence that transforms mere words into experiences that resonate with readers. I realized that people crave connections, not just information.

They want to feel understood, inspired, and moved.

In 2024, I vowed to inject my genuine emotions into every piece, sharing not just my thoughts but my feelings, hopes, and fears.

This vulnerability was terrifying at first, but it became my strength, drawing readers in and fostering a deeper connection that transcended the screen.

2 — Solving Problems — The Bridge to Relevance

My second epiphany was about relevance.

Previously, my articles were more like lectures, brimming with information but lacking practical application.

I needed to address real-life problems, offer solutions, and provide value that extended beyond mere knowledge sharing.

Thus, I shifted my focus to problem-solving.

Whether it was offering writing tips, life hacks, or industry insights, each article aimed to make a tangible difference in the readers’ lives.

This not only increased engagement but also established my credibility as a go-to source for practical advice and insights.

3 — Engagement and SEO — The Dual Engines of Visibility

Lastly, I recognized the critical role of engagement and search engine optimization (SEO) in expanding my reach.

No matter how profound my articles were, they were doomed to obscurity without effective promotion and visibility.

I honed my skills in crafting compelling headlines, optimizing content for search engines, and actively engaging with my readers and fellow writers.

These efforts paid off, amplifying my voice in the crowded digital landscape and attracting a broader audience to my work.

The Ripple Effect

The culmination of these efforts was an article that struck a chord with many, addressing common writing pitfalls while offering actionable advice and emotional resonance.

It was this blend of practicality, vulnerability, and strategic promotion that resonated with readers and drove the article to achieve unprecedented success on Medium.

Embracing the Journey

As I reflect on this transformative journey, I am filled with gratitude.

The challenges of 2023 have paved the way for growth and success in 2024.

I’ve learned that writing is not just about sharing what we know but about connecting, solving problems, and continuously adapting to the ever-changing digital landscape.

I share these insights not as definitive answers but as waypoints on our collective journey of growth and discovery.

Let us continue to learn, adapt, and support each other, for the world of writing is vast and filled with endless possibilities.

The path to becoming a better writer is ongoing and multifaceted.

It involves deepening emotional connections, providing tangible solutions, optimizing visibility, and above all, embracing the lessons learned along the way.

As we move forward, let us do so with open hearts and minds, ready to write our way into a brighter, more connected future.

A Writer’s Poem As We Enter Year 2024

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey

In Twenty-Twenty-Four, a Dream Unfurls

In the heart of the year, a dream takes flight,
A writer’s journey, in the soft moonlight.
Twenty-Twenty-Four, a canvas new,
A story begins, painted in hues true.

Words dance like leaves in a gentle breeze,
Capturing whispers, the soul to please.
Through the pen flows a river deep,
Where thoughts and dreams from shadows leap.

In pages bound by hope and light,
A writer’s tale shines ever bright.
In every line, a world unfurls,
A tapestry of dreams, in swirls.

Each word a step on a path so wide,
With passion as the ever-glowing guide.
The ink, a friend, in the quiet night,
Illuminates thoughts, brings dreams to sight.

In Twenty-Twenty-Four, the story’s told,
Of a heart brave, and a spirit bold.
A writer’s journey, from dawn to dusk,
In words that whisper, in a world so lush.

Embrace the call of the muse’s song,
For in your heart, it’s been all along.
In Twenty-Twenty-Four, let your story soar,
A writer’s dream, alive forevermore.

Avoid These 10 Mistakes and Become a Better Writer in 2024

Image created using Midjourney by Author of Startup Journey

I have written over 100 articles in 2023, but over 80% had at most ten views.

It’s sad, and it’s tiring.

We write to share our ideas and knowledge among our readers.

In the early part of the year, I had almost zero increase in followers.

As 2023 ended, I took a step back and analyzed what had gone wrong.

Here’s a list of mistakes I will not repeat next year, and you can probably try to avoid doing that, too.

Writing Mistakes I Made in 2023

  1. Lack of Emotional Depth in Writing: I often wrote mechanically, neglecting to infuse my work with genuine passion or emotion, which made my writing seem detached and unengaging.
  2. Focus on Knowledge Rather Than Problem-Solving: My topics were heavily knowledge-oriented, lacking opportunities to address and solve real-life problems that could have added more value to the readers.
  3. Failure to Connect with the Audience: I chose topics that did not resonate with my readers, resulting in a disconnect between my content and the interests or needs of my audience.
  4. Neglecting the Power of Headlines and SEO: I should have noticed the importance of crafting catchy, attention-grabbing headlines and optimizing my content for search engines, which limited my reach and visibility.
  5. Overly Complex Sentences: My writing often included long-winded, complex sentences, which made the content difficult to follow and less reader-friendly.
  6. Superficial Engagement with Fellow Writers: My interactions with other writers needed more sincerity and depth, preventing me from building meaningful connections and learning from my peers.
  7. Unstrategic Republishing of Old Content: I randomly republished old articles from various blogs without a strategic plan or updates, which didn’t add fresh value or relevance to the content.
  8. Not Keeping Up with Trending Topics: I failed to research and analyze hot, popular topics in my field, missing out on riding the wave of trending content that could have attracted more readers.
  9. Shortage of Practical “How-To” Guides: My content lacked practical, step-by-step “How-To” guides, essential for providing actionable advice and solutions to readers.
  10. Inconsistent Sharing of Personal Writing Experiences: I did not regularly share personal stories about my writing experiences, including failures and achievements, which could have made my journey more relatable and inspiring to others.

The above might not be an extensive list, but it is undoubtedly a list of mistakes I should avoid.

How about you?
