How Do You Find A Home For Your Words

WRITER’S JOURNEY

I have found a true home at Medium — a platform where I found my voice.

Photo by Scott Webb on Unsplash

As the CEO of a Startup, my days are often filled with the structured chaos of managing projects and innovations in the Internet of Things (IoT). I am immersed in the world of telecommunications, where technical jargon and concrete results reign supreme. Hidden beneath my technological facade lies a budding passion for writing – my escape and creative outlet.

Discovering My Voice on a New Stage

Photo by Matthias Wagner on Unsplash

My journey into the world of writing began timidly.

English is not my first language, and this fact always loomed large in my mind, presenting itself as a formidable barrier.

Each sentence pushed me beyond my comfort zone as I strove to translate technical precision into nuanced prose.

In my early days on Medium, my articles felt clumsy and shallow.

They were technical reports rather than stories, lacking the depth and flair I admired in the works of seasoned writers.

My words seemed like faint echoes in an empty chamber — quickly written, quickly forgotten.

My initial lack of engagement on my posts made me question, “Will anyone even notice?

Despite these challenges, a resilient spark within me refused to be extinguished.

I persisted despite doubts and language barriers.

A Community That Nurtures

Photo by Vonecia Carswell on Unsplash

It was the community on Medium that began to change everything for me.

This platform is a melting pot of ideas and expressions where novice and experienced writers gather to share and grow.

As I interacted more within this community, I realized that writing, much like technology, thrives on constant learning and exchanging ideas.

The encouragement and feedback from fellow writers were instrumental.

They went beyond critiquing my writing and engaged with my ideas, urging me to refine my arguments.

Collaborative writing contrasted with my solitary IoT work.

Mastering the Craft

As I grew more comfortable on Medium, my approach to writing evolved.

I learned the importance of crafting captivating headlines, engaging introductions, and powerful conclusions — elements that are crucial in holding a reader’s attention in the fast-paced digital world.

I began to view each article as a small project, where thorough research, drafting, and revisions were necessary steps towards a polished final piece.

This meticulousness, something I honed through years in technology development, found a new application in my writing.

From Timidity to Confidence

Photo by Blake Weyland on Unsplash

With each published article, I could feel my confidence building.

My followers on Medium grew, and the engagement on my posts — comments, claps, and shares — started to increase.

This feedback loop was exhilarating; it was tangible evidence that my words were resonating with others.

This newfound confidence was transformative.

I moved from being a timid, uncertain writer to one who could assertively claim his space within the community.

Medium became more than just a platform for sharing thoughts; it was a crucible where my identity as a writer was forged.

Embracing My Unique Voice

Photo by Stephen Harlan on Unsplash

Today, I look back on my journey with a sense of accomplishment.

Medium has taught me that my unique perspective as a technologist can enrich my writing.

The analytical skills and systematic thinking that define my professional life have become assets in my creative endeavors.

My narrative is no longer just about overcoming a language barrier; it’s about embracing my background in technology to offer fresh insights on familiar topics.

Each article is a blend of precision and creativity, reflecting the dual aspects of my professional expertise and personal passion.

A Home Among Words

I have found a true home at Medium — a platform where every voice, including those that start as hesitant whispers, can find strength and resonance.

Here, in this vibrant community of writers and readers, I belong.

In the heart of Medium, amidst its myriad voices and stories, I continue to write, share, and dream.

This is more than a platform; it’s a stage where my once uncertain voice now sings clearly and confidently. Here, on this vast and endless stage, I’ve discovered not just my way, but also my heart and my resonance.

And here, I will stay. For in this space, I have not only found my voice but have also connected with a community that continues to inspire and propel me forward.

Let this account of my journey be a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative potential of embracing one’s unique voice in the world of writing.

How to Remember Names to People’s Faces

SELF-IMPROVEMENT

These ten (10) strategies are more than just tools; they are my companions in connection.

Photo by Mika Ruusunen on Unsplash

In my work, networking is vital, and forgetting a name isn’t just embarrassing – it feels like a professional blunder.

I’ve had countless moments where a person whose face is familiar but whose name dances just beyond reach greets me with a warm, “Hello, it’s great to see you again!

Meanwhile, my mind races in panic.

In these moments, amidst the smiles and handshakes, I’ve found myself asking for business cards under the guise of needing their details, or worse, sheepishly admitting I’ve forgotten their name.

These interactions often leave me ruminating over the incident, feeling frustration and embarrassment.

Photo by Elijah Hiett on Unsplash

How could I not remember? They remembered mine,” I’d chastise myself.

In business networking, where knowing names is as crucial as exchanging ideas, my inability to recall names made me feel unprofessional and, frankly, a bit rude.

Determined to overcome this challenge, I embarked on a mission to master remembering names.

I needed a system, a technique – anything that could spare me from future embarrassments.

Here’s a glimpse into the ten key strategies to remember names effectively.

Photo by Christopher Campbell on Unsplash

1 – Repeat the Name

Nice to meet you, Siti Sarah.” I’d say it out loud, anchoring Siti Sarah’s name in the air between us.

So, Siti Sarah, how long have you been in marketing?” Continuing to use her name in conversation, I reinforced the connection, hoping it would stick.

It felt forced at first, but repetition was my first defense against forgetting.

2 – Associate with a Visual Image

When I met Abu, whose name didn’t trigger any immediate associations, I pictured him like “ashes” (in Malay, it is called “Abu”) after burning a bonfire.

It was a simple image, yet vivid enough to be memorable.

Each subsequent encounter with Abu reinforced this mental image, effectively linking his name to something familiar.

Photo by Omid Armin on Unsplash

3 – Make a Connection

Meeting Maya, a veterinarian, gave me a perfect keyword: Maya, the vet.

This connection wasn’t just about her profession; it was a way to link her identity to something meaningful and specific.

Maya the vet” wasn’t just a mnemonic – it was a story I remembered when sending my cat to the vet.

4 – Use Mnemonics

Mnemonics were trickier.

Meeting someone named Malek, I rhymed it with “lake” and imagined him rowing on a serene lake.

These creative associations sometimes felt silly, but the sillier they were, the better they stuck.

Photo by Omid Armin on Unsplash

5 – Write It Down

After each event, I’d jot down names and details on my phone. “Met Safuan – plump, glasses, likes innovation” would be a typical note.

Writing helped me remember and provided a reference for future interactions.

6 – Ask for the Spelling

This tactic was beneficial with unique names. “Is that Rahim with an R-A-H-I-M?” I’d inquire.

Often, spelling it out transformed the name from an abstract sound to a concrete series of letters in my mind.

Photo by Albert Dera on Unsplash

7 – Make a Connection with Someone You Know

Connecting new names to familiar ones was unexpectedly powerful.

Meeting a new Azman instantly brought to mind my childhood friend Azman.

This linkage provided a bridge from the new to the familiar, embedding the new Azman in a network of existing memories.

8 — Focus and Be Present

I learned to quiet the inner monologue during introductions.

Instead of planning my following sentence, I focused intently on the person before me.

This mindfulness, this entire presence, was perhaps the most challenging yet rewarding change I implemented.

Photo by Jimmy Fermin on Unsplash

9 — Use Their Name in Conversation

Using the person’s name in our conversation was like reinforcing a learning loop.

What do you think about that, Zura?” I’d ask. Each repetition was a gentle hammer tap, embedding her name deeper in my memory.

10 — Visualize the Name Written Out

Visualizing names as if they were written on a name tag across the person’s chest helped differently.

I’d imagine the letters, the font, even the color.

This helped with spelling and visual memory, which was often stronger than auditory memory for me.

Photo by Gabriel Silvério on Unsplash

Through trial and error, I crafted a multifaceted approach to remembering names.

Each strategy had its place, and together, they formed a robust defense against my previous forgetfulness.

More importantly, these techniques showed me that remembering someone’s name wasn’t just a memory trick; it was a sign of respect, a way to honor the person and their identity.

As I continue to meet new people, these strategies are more than just tools; they are my companions in the art of connection, making each handshake and smile a step toward a genuinely memorable interaction.

What are your tips for remembering a person’s name? Kindly share in the comments section.

Staying True To Your Passion and Purpose

WRITER’S STORIES

In the end, the best tales are those that take time to unfold.

Photo by Pim Chu on Unsplash

As I sit here reflecting on my past, I’m fighting a battle of emotions—a mix of frustration and pride.

People love to sell us stories of overnight success, of magic shortcuts that supposedly lead to instant fame and fortune. “Oh, how different reality is,” I often remind myself.

Remember why you started, Mazlan?” Ten years ago, I was brimming with a desire to share my thoughts and insights with the world.

I took the plunge and began writing online.

Since then, it’s been a whirlwind filled with its own highs and lows.

I’ve built a community, launched a newsletter, and published books. I’ve grown immensely as a writer.

Photo by Aaron Burden on Unsplash

To outsiders, it may appear as though I’ve stumbled upon a glamorous success story. “But let me pull back the curtain for you,” I’d say if they were here.

Most people don’t see the immense amount of work that goes into each piece of content.

I’ve published hundreds of stories to date!” Each one is like laying a brick in a vast wall.

I’m building brick by brick.

It can be tedious, and sometimes it truly is.

I’ve spent countless lonely hours at my keyboard, pouring my heart and soul into articles that sometimes never see the light of day — ending up in my drafts folder or disappearing into the internet’s black hole.

My follower count on Medium grew to over 2,000, which is an achievement.

Some articles have garnered good earnings, which are always a sweet bonus.

Photo by Josh Appel on Unsplash

But behind these small victories lies a vast sea of quickly forgotten content.

And frankly, I’m still far from making a living solely from my writing,” I sigh.

During moments of reflection, I often ask, “Is all this effort worth it?”

Doubt creeps in, and I grapple with thoughts of giving up.

During these times, I pause and reconnect with my initial motivations.

Why did you start writing, Mazlan?” My goal has always been to empower people through my writing and create a community.

Being your coach and cheerleader is no easy feat — it’s mentally exhausting.

Photo by Tim De Pauw on Unsplash

Yet, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than right here, right now, doing what I love, regardless of the outcome.

I’ve realized that every article I write, whether a hit or a miss, contributes to my growth as a writer.

When I doubt myself among successful peers, I step back.

Look how far you’ve come, Mazlan,” I remind myself.

It’s essential to appreciate the journey.

Photo by Khamkéo Vilaysing on Unsplash

The journey, with all its ups and downs, is what matters most.

The process of creating and expressing oneself is where the real value lies.

You can’t fail if you’re doing what you love,” I affirm.

But the moment you stop loving what you do, failure sneaks in.

So, to anyone feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to succeed overnight, remember this: real success is not about hitting it big quickly.

It’s about resilience, writing your story over many nights, and staying true to your passion and purpose, no matter what.

Let’s keep writing our own stories, filled with persistence and passion,” I encourage myself and others.

In the end, the best tales are those that take time to unfold.

Turning Life’s Challenges Into Stepping Stones

LIFE STORIES

From doubts to dreams.

Photo by Илья Мельниченко on Unsplash

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been someone who dreamt big.

Lying in bed at night as a child, my room lit only by the soft glow of a nightlight, I would imagine the most fantastic future for myself.

Astronaut, scientist, inventor – the possibilities stretched like the universe itself, endless and exhilarating.

My heartbeat matched the rhythm of my dreams, each thump reaffirming the potential I believed I held.

Someday, you’re going to make us all proud,” my mom would say with a smile, her words a gentle nudge towards an undefined greatness.

Photo by Katrina Wright on Unsplash

I believed her, and more importantly, I believed in myself.

My ambitions were not just dreams; they were inevitable realities waiting for me just over the horizon.

But as the years passed, the horizon seemed to stretch further away, and the path grew rocky.

The school was my first real battleground.

I remember sitting in my sixth-grade classroom, staring at a math test as though it were written in an alien script.

Numbers danced mockingly before my eyes, refusing to make sense.

I’m not good enough for this,” I whispered to myself, a despair mantra that began eating away at the edges of my confidence.

Photo by Francisco De Legarreta C. on Unsplash

That day, I took my first taste of failure, bitter and lingering.

High school wasn’t any kinder.

Social dynamics, more challenging courses, and an ever-growing awareness of my family’s financial limitations compounded my daily struggles.

Dreams of space and science gave way to more immediate concerns: passing tests, fitting in, and making it through without drawing too much attention to myself.

It’s all just a little too hard, isn’t it?” I’d mutter under my breath, the weight of adolescent angst pressing down on me.

Photo by Alexander Grey on Unsplash

My dreams felt childish now, foolish in the face of real-world pressures.

The ambition that had once fueled me was now just another source of pain, a reminder of how far I was from where I wanted to be.

Entering the workforce did little to alleviate these feelings.

Entry-level jobs were grindingly mundane, each day resembling the one before.

I watched my peers, some of whom had struggled alongside me, climb their way up, their successes seeming both deserved and distant.

Why them and not me? What am I missing?” The questions haunted me, echoes of doubt that filled my quieter moments.

Photo by Yogendra Singh on Unsplash

I saw friends innovate and advance, while I felt stuck, incapable of shaking the sense that I was meant for more, yet unable to reach it.

Then, something shifted.

It could be the accumulation of seeing others rise despite their battles or the weariness of carrying negativity that had become too heavy.

I began to look at my challenges differently.

Maybe this isn’t a blockade; maybe it’s just a detour,” I told myself.

Each setback and disappointment became less of a stop sign and more of a redirection, a nudge towards a different path that might ultimately lead to a destination I had always hoped to reach.

I started taking night classes, pushing through the fatigue of full workdays to expand my skills.

During one of these classes, I found it – my passion for digital design, a field that married creativity with technology in ways I hadn’t imagined possible.

See? There’s always something new to discover, a new dream to chase,” I’d say to my reflection, a newfound determination lighting up my features.

Photo by John Schnobrich on Unsplash

Slowly, I built a portfolio, took on small freelance projects, and began to see progress.

Each completed assignment was a stepping stone, each client meeting a boost to my confidence.

As I moved forward, I realized that the light at the end of the tunnel wasn’t a distant, external light but something within me all along, waiting to be burned into flame by perseverance and a shift in perspective.

Success, I learned, isn’t about eradicating struggles; it’s about growing through them, harnessing them to propel you forward.

Looking back, I can see the tapestry of my life – every thread of difficulty woven in with those of triumph. “You’ve made it, and you’ll keep making it,” I often remind myself, a smile playing on my lips.

To anyone out there feeling beaten down by life’s relentless challenges, remember this: do not give up.

Your dreams do not have expiration dates, and your struggles are not roadblocks but invitations to rise, reshape your journey, and find success in ways you might never have imagined.

The light at the end of the tunnel is not an illusion; it’s the product of your enduring spirit.

Keep moving, keep dreaming, and keep reaching for that light.

It’s closer than you think.

The Rise of Mythical Phoenix From The Ashes

THE ENTREPRENEUR’S JOURNEY

It is a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and to rise time and again.

Photo by Marek Piwnicki on Unsplash

There are moments in life that test the essence of our spirit, moments so dark that seems to fray at the edges.

I’ve walked through such shadows, where the haze of difficulty obscured the light of hope, and the relentless grind of failure seemed to beat down my every step.

In those gloomy days of my life, I felt as though I was trudging a weary path, my soul tired and heavy with the burdens of a life that seemed more about surviving than living.

Despair wrapped its cold hands around my heart, tightening with every setback and every disappointment.

Photo by Ben White on Unsplash

Yet, in this abyss, where the light of hope flickered dimly like the last star in a storm-ravaged sky, I paused.

Amid the turmoil of my failures, a spark within me refused to be snuffed out.

It was the flicker of inner might, a quiet but persistent voice that whispered, “Stand up from the dark,” urging me to fight back against the despair that threatened to consume me.

“Am I to fall here?” I questioned myself one evening, sitting in the dim light of my bedroom, surrounded by the manuscripts of my failed projects and the debris of broken dreams.

“Is this the end of my story?”

Photo by Gabriel Soto on Unsplash

From this despair, where hope had seemed as rare as a desert rose, strength surged through me, a strength born from the sheer will to dare to dream once more.

In my heart, a flame reignited, dispelling the shadows of fear and doubt that had clouded my vision.

This inner light guided me through the dark nights, each step forward fueled by newfound courage that shone brightly against the odds.

With resolve, I rose again, shedding the past pain and stain of failures.

Photo by Harnoor dhaliwal on Unsplash

From the ashes of my defeats, I refrained from succumbing to the bane of giving up.

Renewed with vigor and standing firm on the solid ground of my convictions, I felt a resilient spirit being crowned within the depths of my soul.

The scars of my journey, etched deep within me, became not marks of shame but badges of honor — lessons that I carried as reminders of the steep climbs and the valleys oh so bleak.

Each scar was a story of a battle fought, a challenge met, and a victory, however small, achieved.

Here I stand, revived and rejuvenated.

Photo by Anthony Tori on Unsplash

From the trials I faced, I derived strength, and from the woes I survived, I arrived at triumph.

Each tear that had fallen, each night filled with dread, had led me to a brighter path where hope and dreams were not just envisioned but vigorously pursued.

I rise like a phoenix, freed from the chains of despair’s dark decree.

Embracing life’s challenges, I am determined to be all I can be to fulfill the potential that life’s trials have revealed in me.

Photo by Mohammad Mardani on Unsplash

So when days turn grim and dire, and I find myself walking through the metaphorical fire of life’s challenges, I remember my inner strength rising ever higher.

With each fall, I rise wiser and fiercer, aware that within me lies the prize of tomorrow’s bright sunrise.

In every moment of defeat, when I feel far from great, I recall the power innate within me — to change my destined fate.

For in my heart, no matter how low the moments might bring me, I possess the glow, the undying ember, that can ignite the fires of hope, resilience, and determination.

I am Mazlan Abbas, and this is my story, a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and to rise, time and again, like the mythical phoenix from the ashes of what was to the promise of what can be.

Is This Journey Worth The Pain?

STARTUP FOUNDER’S JOURNEY

My echoes of perseverance.

Photo by Vitaly Taranov on Unsplash

Sitting alone, wrapped in the solitude of my early failures, the shroud of doubt often felt suffocating.

Is this journey worth the pain?” I’d ask myself as the whispers of defeat echoed menacingly around me, each like a dark chorus tuned to discourage.

Yet, in my heart’s deepest, quietest part, a resilient voice softly countered, “Hold on, for there are victories you haven’t yet claimed, achievements that lie just beyond the horizon.”

Reflecting on the days of my youth, I remember how clumsy and unsure I felt.

Will I ever get this right?” I’d mutter under my breath with each attempt to walk the path of my dreams, inevitably stumbling yet again.

Photo by Arturo Castaneyra on Unsplash

My steps were faltering, unsteady, but driven by an indomitable will that shouted back at the gravity of failure, “I will not yield!

With each fall, my resolve wasn’t merely restored but redrawn — more robust, explicit, and determined.

In this struggle, I discovered my song, a melody of perseverance that would guide me through many battlegrounds.

Running wasn’t an option back then, nor was leaping towards the vast expanse of the sky.

Why try again?” doubt would whisper as gravity mocked my efforts.

Yet, my spirit, unyielding and buoyant, always replied, “Watch me soar.

And soar I did, higher with each attempt.

Photo by Ralph Mayhew on Unsplash

From the ashes of my failed endeavors, I learned not just to walk, but to fly, reaching milestones that once seemed nothing more than distant dreams and eventually, winning championships under the resounding cry of triumph.

As high school concluded, I stood distinctly apart from the traditional successes that crowned the journeys of my peers.

Where do I fit in?” I often pondered, staring at a path unmarked and daunting.

However, within the smoldering embers of my youthful dreams, a fierce and unextinguished flame persisted, whispering, “Forge your own way.

It propelled me towards the university’s gates, where I would rewrite my name as a student and a visionary ready to challenge the status quo.

The years that followed were a testament to persistence.

The right job — a fitting glove for my aspirations and abilities — seemed beyond reach.

Each rejection stung, venomous, and discouraging.

Maybe it’s not meant to be,” I would sigh, yet deep inside, a firmer voice held fast, “Your vision is worth the fight.

Photo by Zdeněk Macháček on Unsplash

Clutching the vision of my future tightly, I resolved to forge my path, to craft my destiny with the tools of innovation and the fire of ambition.

From the relentless echoes of ‘no,’ a new idea began to take wing.

Entrepreneurial dreams, long nurtured in the quiet corners of my resolve, crystallized.

This is your moment,” I convinced myself as I stepped into the market’s harsh arena, not as a mere contender but as a would-be king, determined to create success from each failure, to learn from each fall, and to rise stronger with each setback.

Photo by the blowup on Unsplash

Failures were plentiful, like storms raging against the bow of my endeavors.

Yet, each setback and storm scripted a new page in my book of wisdom.

What’s the lesson here?” I would ask after each loss, and resilience, my steadfast heritage, became my shield against the storms of doubt and failure.

From each loss, I crafted a victorious stage, turning the lessons of defeat into stepping stones toward success.

Now, I stand where once I fell, a tale of triumph etched into the lines of my life.

From the depths of failure’s well, I rose, basking in the sunlight of success, my journey illuminated by the lessons learned in the darkest times.

Photo by Daniel Jiménez on Unsplash

You’ve made it, but keep climbing,” I remind myself, knowing the journey is far from over.

This relentless and testing journey proves that within each of us lies a quest, a silent battle against the odds.

It is a journey to transform failures into a zest for life, turn every misstep into a milestone, and find the best of ourselves in our darkest hours.

Let these words serve as a light for those who, amidst their struggles, seek to find a glimpse of hope — that every loss, every defeat, bears within it the key to unlocking the boundless sea of success.

What Drives Your Passion for Change?

THOUGHT LEADER’S STORIES

I share 15 tips on how strategic and diverse thinking can lead to groundbreaking achievements.

Photo by Ross Findon on Unsplash

Reflecting on my transition from academia to spearheading entrepreneurial ventures in IoT and smart cities, I often asked myself, “What drives my passion for change?

Throughout my tenure as co-founder of FAVORIOT, I’ve been driven by a relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence.

This journey is peppered with self-dialogues that have shaped my leadership philosophy and business approach.

Here, I share insights into how strategic and diverse thinking can lead to groundbreaking achievements.

1 — Think Innovatively, Lead Change

I often asked myself, “How can we transform interaction with our environments?

This vision was not just about introducing new technologies but about reshaping perceptions and setting new paradigms.

I would remind myself, “Innovation is about foreseeing needs and crafting solutions that are not only advanced but accessible and impactful.”

2 — Think Strategically, Overcome Challenges

Strategic thinking became my compass in navigating the complexities of a startup in an emerging industry.

How can we turn this obstacle into an opportunity?” I would ponder.

Each challenge — securing funding to navigating regulatory hurdles — was a chance to refine our business model and strengthen our foothold.

3 — Think Persistently, Achieve Goals

The path could have been smoother, laden with setbacks that tested our resolve.

I’d reassure myself in those moments, “Stay focused on the long-term goals. Don’t get swayed by short-term hurdles.

This persistent mindset was crucial in building a platform supporting thousands of IoT applications.

4 — Think Boldly, Disrupt Markets

Are we bold enough?” I would challenge my team and myself as we aimed to democratize technology access.

Our bold entry into the IoT space disrupted traditional models, providing unprecedented technology access to businesses of all sizes.

5 — Think Creatively, Find Solutions

Photo by Skye Studios on Unsplash
