About Favoriot – Part V: Find Product-Market Fit to Survive

Finding the Right Fit: The Early Challenges and Breakthroughs of Favoriot

At Favoriot’s booth — Regenerated by Glam

I still remember how difficult it was to secure our first ten customers, even though the Favoriot Platform was offered for free initially.

Despite the offer, it wasn’t easy to attract interest. At that time, I was genuinely worried. I kept wondering, would this product succeed? Or would it just become another obsolete product forgotten shortly after its launch?

“Is all this effort going to be in vain?” That was the question that often crossed my mind. What if the product we had developed with such dedication wasn’t accepted by the market? What if all the hard work my team put in, tirelessly day and night, to make Favoriot a success, didn’t bear fruit?

I knew I couldn’t let them down. My team had given their best, and as their leader, I couldn’t allow their efforts to go to waste.

But as time went on, I felt more and more pressure to ensure that Favoriot found its rightful place in the market.

I often sat and pondered, sometimes late into the night, trying to figure out how to gain the necessary market traction. Market traction isn’t something easily achieved, especially when you’re a new player in a competitive industry like IoT.

At first, we started by offering Favoriot to individuals. We targeted university students and freelancers who might be interested in using the platform for their projects.

But even with this strategy, the results were not what we had hoped for. I began to think that maybe our approach wasn’t quite right.

I then considered, “Perhaps we should offer this platform to university lecturers.” They had students involved in IoT projects, so maybe they would see the value in Favoriot.

But unfortunately, this effort also didn’t yield satisfying results. I began to feel anxious. “What else can we do?” I asked myself, searching for a way forward.

We then shifted our focus to offering Favoriot directly to customers. We tried introducing the platform to companies and organizations that might need IoT solutions.

However, once again, a new challenge arose. Many didn’t know how to use the platform. “Are we too early to the market?” I wondered. Maybe, at that time, awareness of IoT among customers wasn’t mature enough.

In the startup world, there’s a concept known as “Product-Market Fit” (PMF). This is the point where your product truly meets the needs of the market.

If you don’t achieve PMF quickly, your product might fail. And I knew that if Favoriot didn’t reach PMF, there was a high chance we would have to shut down operations.

But I didn’t give up. I kept searching for the right customers, those who truly needed what Favoriot offered.

After many trials and errors, we finally found that the best customers for our platform were IoT System Integrators. These were companies or individuals who provided IoT solutions to their own customers. They needed a platform like Favoriot to build IoT applications that could meet the specific needs of their clients.

Finally, Favoriot found its way. We started offering the platform in two models – cloud-based and enterprise-based.

The cloud-based model was for customers who wanted a more flexible solution that could be accessed from anywhere. Meanwhile, the enterprise-based model was more suited for System Integrators who wanted full control over their platform.

This model came with a perpetual license and unlimited API, allowing them to build IoT applications without worrying about the high API costs typically charged by other major platforms like AWS or Azure.

With this discovery, Favoriot began to find its place in the market. I felt a bit of relief, but at the same time, I knew that the journey was far from over.

We still needed to continue innovating and ensuring that the platform remained relevant in an ever-changing industry.

But at least now, I was more confident that Favoriot had a bright future.

This isn’t the end of the story. I will continue to share our journey, how we found other customers, and how we grew Favoriot into one of the leading IoT platforms. But that will be in the next part.

Stay with me on this journey, because I believe that every step we take has its own story that can inspire those striving in the startup world.

In the next part, I will share more about who else became customers of the Favoriot IoT Platform and how we won their hearts.

What 90% of Successful Medium Writers Do Differently

WRITER’S JOURNEY

3 Tips for New Authors

Photo by Santa Barbara on Unsplash

While reviewing some of the most successful articles on Medium the other day, I stumbled upon an intriguing piece titled “What 90% of the Successful Medium Writers Do Differently.

It made me think about my journey and what has worked for me. I want to share my experiences and insights, especially for new authors.

When I first started writing, I didn’t know what to expect. The world of Medium was vast, and I was just another voice among millions. But over time, I found my footing.

Three essential tips can make a significant difference in your writing journey.

1 — Find Your Niche and Stick to It

Photo by Liam Read on Unsplash

“Mazlan, you need to focus,” I often told myself.

In the early days, I wrote about everything under the sun—technology, personal development, business, you name it. But then something clicked. I realized that my true passion was IoT and smart cities. This was my niche.

Finding a niche doesn’t mean you can’t write about other topics, but having a primary focus helps establish your authority in a particular area. For me, it was IoT. I started to share my insights, experiences, and knowledge about IoT, and gradually, people began to notice.

“Stick to what you know best, Mazlan,” I reminded myself.

Consistency is key.

By consistently writing about IoT, I built a following of readers who were genuinely interested in the topic.

They knew what to expect from me, and that’s crucial in building a loyal audience.

2 — Engage with Your Readers

I still remember the first comment I received on my article. It was a simple question about a concept I had explained, and that interaction was a turning point for me.

“Engage with your readers, Mazlan,” I told myself. “They’re your community.”

Responding to comments, answering questions, and acknowledging criticisms helped me connect with my audience more deeply.

It showed them that I valued their opinions and was open to discussions.

Engagement goes beyond just replying to comments.

It’s about creating a dialogue.

I started asking questions at the end of my articles, encouraging readers to share their thoughts. This boosted engagement and gave me new perspectives and ideas for future articles.

“Every reader is a potential friend,” I reminded myself.

Building relationships with your readers fosters a sense of community.

It makes them feel valued and more likely to return to your future writings.

3 — Be Authentic and Vulnerable

Photo by Brett Jordan on Unsplash

Writing isn’t just about sharing information; it’s about sharing yourself. Some of my most successful articles were the ones where I was open about my struggles and failures.

“Be real, Mazlan. Share your story,” I often reminded myself.

I wrote about my challenges while building FAVORIOT, my mistakes, and the lessons I learned.

These personal stories resonated with readers because they were relatable. People appreciate authenticity. They want to know that the person behind the words is natural and human.

Vulnerability is a strength in writing.

It allows you to connect with your readers on an emotional level.

When I shared my journey, including the setbacks and triumphs, readers could see themselves in my stories, making my articles more impactful and memorable.

“Your experiences are your greatest asset,” I told myself.

Reflecting on my journey, these three tips have been instrumental in my success on Medium.

They helped me grow as a writer and build a dedicated readership.

But more importantly, they reminded me why I started writing in the first place — to share my passion and connect with others.

Writing is a journey, and every writer’s path is unique.

But by finding your niche, engaging with your readers, and being authentic, you can create a meaningful and impactful presence on Medium.

Pivoting Your Products to Find Success

STARTUP STORIES

A Personal Account

Photo by Jorge Ramirez on Unsplash

What’s the best strategy for building a business? Should we focus on a single product or diversify our offerings? Is it wiser to invest all our resources in a single endeavor or spread them across multiple ventures?

These questions have haunted me since the inception of FAVORIOT. As an entrepreneur in the IoT (Internet of Things), I’ve learned that no one-size-fits-all answer exists.

The journey of building products is fraught with uncertainty, and pivots are an inevitable part of the process.

Allow me to take you through our experience at FAVORIOT, where each product we developed taught us valuable lessons and shaped our path forward.

The First Step: Raqib

Photo by Vlad Sargu on Unsplash

Our first product, Favorwatch, was envisioned as a solution for elderly care. The idea was to provide a device that could monitor the health and safety of senior citizens, allowing their families to have peace of mind. The market seemed promising, and we were excited about the potential impact Raqib could have.

But things didn’t go as planned.

Dr. Mazlan, the initial feedback isn’t as positive as we hoped,” my colleague mentioned one day. The product was functional, but the adoption rate was not meeting our expectations.

It became clear that our vision needed adjustment.

Let’s rethink our target market,” I suggested during a team meeting. “What if we pivot Raqib for Hajj pilgrims instead? They face unique challenges and could benefit from a similar monitoring solution.

This pivot breathed new life into Raqib.

By targeting Hajj pilgrims, we found a market that genuinely needed our product.

It was a critical lesson in the importance of flexibility and market understanding.

Expanding Horizons: Favorsense

Photo by ben o’bro on Unsplash

After the experience with Raqib, we were more cautious and confident in our ability to pivot when necessary.

Our second product, Favorsense, aimed to help local authorities manage public complaints. The idea was to create a platform to collect data, identify pain points, and help build smarter cities.

Do you think this will work?” I asked my team during one of our brainstorming sessions. “We must ensure Favorsense is versatile enough to adapt to different needs.

The initial target was local authorities, but as we developed Favorsense, we saw its potential applications expand.

Universities, housing developers, and enforcement agencies showed interest in using the platform to manage their data and complaints.

Look at this feedback from the campus trial,” one of my team members said, handing me a report.

The response was overwhelmingly positive.

It was clear that Favorsense could serve various markets, not just local authorities.

This flexibility in application became a cornerstone of Favorsense’s success.

We learned that building a product with adaptability in mind could open doors to markets we hadn’t initially considered.

The Game Changer: Favoriot IoT Platform

Our third product, the Favoriot IoT platform, was conceived to be the backbone of IoT applications.

We offered it as a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), enabling developers to build and manage their IoT solutions easily.

This is our chance to make a significant impact,” I told my team. “The IoT platform will be essential for any IoT deployment, and we want Favoriot to be the go-to choice.

The response was incredible.

Over 8,200 users from 121 countries started using the platform, and the numbers kept growing.

Our Favoriot IoT platform quickly became more successful than our previous products.

Dr. Mazlan, the traction is beyond what we expected,” my business development lead said, showing me the user growth charts.

It was a testament to the platform’s utility and the global need for such a solution.

The success of the Favoriot IoT platform reinforced the idea that a core, indispensable product could drive significant growth.

Every IoT deployment needs a robust platform, and we positioned Favoriot as that essential component.

Reflections on Strategy

So, what’s the best strategy to build a business?

Through my journey with FAVORIOT, I’ve realized that the answer lies in a balance between focus and flexibility.

Starting with a single product allows for concentrated effort and resource allocation, but being open to pivots and diversification can lead to broader opportunities and increased resilience.

Dr. Mazlan, do you think we should develop another product?” one of my team members asked recently.

We should always be open to new ideas,” I replied. “But we must ensure that each new product aligns with our core vision and leverages our existing strengths.

Building a successful business is a continuous learning, adapting, and innovating process.

Our journey with Raqib, Favorsense, and the Favoriot IoT platform has taught us that while the first product might not always hit the mark, the ability to pivot and expand can lead to unforeseen success.

The Road Ahead

As we move forward, FAVORIOT remains committed to developing solutions that address real-world problems and drive the adoption of IoT technologies.

Each product we create is a step towards a smarter, more connected world.

I believe our best work is still ahead of us,” I often tell my team. “Let’s keep pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities.

The journey is as important as the destination.

At FAVORIOT, we’re excited to continue this journey, one innovative product at a time.

The Dreams of an Entrepreneur

ABOUT ME SERIES — MAZLAN ABBAS

My Journey

Photo by Mariano Nocetti on Unsplash

Sitting in my home, looking out the window, I often reflect on the journey that brought me here. My name is Mazlan Abbas, and I’ve always been a dreamer. But what does it mean to be a dreamer? And how did my dreams shape my path as an entrepreneur?

The Early Sparks of Imagination

As a child, I vividly remember being captivated by science fiction novels and DC comics. The futuristic worlds of ‘The Jetsons’ and the adventures in ‘Land of the Giants’ sparked my imagination. “One day,” I would tell myself, “I’ll create something that will change the world, just like the inventions in these stories.”

The dreams of a young boy, many would say. But for me, they were more than mere fantasies. They were the seeds of my future.

The Path to Becoming a Scientist

How can I inspire others?” I often pondered. Speaking at major conferences and sharing insights on social media became avenues to reach out to budding entrepreneurs and technologists.

I aimed to ignite the same spark in others that had driven me.

The Importance of Mentorship

One thing I’ve learned is that dreams are not realized in isolation. Mentorship has played a crucial role in my journey. From my days in academia to my professional career, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who guided me.

How can I give back?” I asked myself. As an adjunct professor and member of industry advisory panels, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor the next generation.

It’s a responsibility I cherish deeply.

Writing and Sharing Knowledge

Photo by Kenny Eliason on Unsplash

Another dream of mine has been to share knowledge through writing. My journey in blogging started on Blogspot, eventually transitioning to more focused platforms like WordPress and Medium. Writing about IoT, entrepreneurship, and my experiences has been a way to connect with a broader audience.

“Words have power,” I believe, and I aim to inspire and educate through my articles. Joining the Medium Partner Program in 2023 was a milestone, allowing me to reach even more readers.

The Dream Continues

Even now, with years of experience and numerous achievements, the dream continues. “What’s next?” I often ask myself. The landscape of technology is ever-evolving, and with it, so are the opportunities to innovate.

I’m excited about the potential of AI, blockchain, and other emerging technologies to transform our world further. FAVORIOT will continue to be at the forefront of these innovations, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

A Message to Dreamers

Photo by Belinda Fewings on Unsplash

I tell all the dreamers: Dream big but be prepared to work tirelessly. Embrace failures as stepping stones to success. Seek mentors and be a mentor.

Most importantly, always remember why you started.

Reflecting on my journey, I’m filled with gratitude as I sit here. The dreams of that young boy, fueled by science fiction and a love for technology, have come a long way. But the journey is far from over. There are still many dreams to be realized, many innovations to be made, and many lives to be touched.

And so, the dreamer in me continues to dream with the same zeal and passion as always. “The best is yet to come,” I tell myself, ready to embrace the future with open arms.

It’s Not So Hard to Decide What to Write About

ABOUT ME STORIES

After reading this, you will find new ways of writing your stories

Photo by Andrew Neel on Unsplash

When I first stumbled upon the article “After Reading This, You’ll Know Exactly What to Write About” on Medium, it felt like fate. Writing has always been a passion of mine, but finding a consistent direction has sometimes felt like navigating through a dense fog.

As I sat in my home office, the article’s title seemed to promise clarity – a path in my creative chaos.

Why is it always so hard to decide what to write about?” I muttered to myself, scrolling through my blog drafts.

They were a motley collection of half-formed thoughts on IoT, entrepreneurship, personal anecdotes, and even a few poems.

My journey in the tech world, from academia to corporate leadership and now entrepreneurship, has been anything but linear. Yet, each twist and turn has shaped my perspective, offering rich fodder for reflection.

As I dove into the article, it suggested that I start by writing about what I know best.

What do I know best?” I mused.

Photo by Robin Glauser on Unsplash

The immediate answer was clear: the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities. After all, as the co-founder and CEO of FAVORIOT, I’ve spent years immersing myself in this field.

But I didn’t want to limit myself to the technical aspects. I tried to weave my experiences, the lessons learned, and the stories behind the innovations.

Let’s start from the beginning,” I thought, remembering my early fascination with technology.

Growing up, I was an avid reader of science fiction novels and comic books. Titles like ‘The Jetsons’ and ‘Land of the Giants’ fueled my imagination.

What if I could create something extraordinary?” I’d often dream.

Photo by Илья Мельниченко on Unsplash

These early influences sparked my ambition to become a scientist, a dream that never waned, even when life took unexpected turns.

Reflecting on my academic journey, I recalled the excitement of securing my Bachelor of Electrical Engineering with First Class Honours from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 1984.

Those were the days of pure enthusiasm and boundless curiosity,” I reminisced.

The next step was a Master of Science in Telematics from the University of Essex in the UK.

The challenges of studying abroad, the cultural shock, and the rigorous academic environment shaped me.

Returning to Malaysia, I embarked on a Ph.D. in Telecommunications from UTM, completing it in 1993.

That was when I first tasted the blend of teaching and research,” I remembered.

My tenure at UTM, during which I rose from Assistant Lecturer to Associate Professor, was deeply fulfilling.

Yet, despite my passion for academia, I yearned for something more – a direct impact on the industry and society.

This desire led me to CELCOM Axiata, where I spent 13 years in various roles, from R&D to billing and network management.

Those corporate years were a different kind of education,” I thought.

They taught me the intricacies of the telecom industry and the importance of innovation in a rapidly evolving market. However, the most significant shift came when I joined MIMOS Berhad as the Senior Director of the Wireless Communications Cluster. Here, my focus on IoT began to crystallize.

How do we push the boundaries of IoT?” This question was my constant companion at MIMOS.

Photo by Sylwia Bartyzel on Unsplash

During this time, I also began sharing my thoughts through blogging. Initially, it was about gadgets and tech insights on Blogspot.

But as my understanding deepened, so did my content.

I created IoT World to explore the Internet of Things specifically, moving my platform to WordPress and eventually to Medium.

Medium became a game-changer for me, especially after joining the Medium Partner Program in September 2023.

What should I write about today?” This question morphed into a more profound inquiry: ”How can I make my writing resonate?” On Medium, I found success by focusing on niche topics—IoT, entrepreneurship, social media, and even poetry and book reviews.

Each piece reflected my journey, my thoughts, and my growth.

But my story wasn’t just about professional milestones. It was about resilience and the unexpected turns of life.

Photo by Alvin Mahmudov on Unsplash

I recalled my childhood in Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur, the schools I attended, and my early entrepreneurial attempts, like selling my comic books.

Failures teach you more than success ever will,” I often reminded myself. These early lessons were invaluable when I faced setbacks later in life.

For instance, not getting to study abroad after Form 5 (Secondary school) was a significant disappointment. ”What now?” I had wondered then.

But looking back, I realized that every setback opened a new path.

My journey from academia to the corporate world and eventually to founding FAVORIOT was a testament to the power of adaptability and perseverance.

Starting FAVORIOT was a leap of faith.

Can we make a difference in the IoT landscape?” This question drove us, my colleagues, and me.

Over the years, FAVORIOT grew, offering comprehensive IoT solutions and helping businesses with their digital transformation.

My role as a leader required constant learning and evolution.

Leadership is about inspiring others,” I often reminded myself.

It was also about making strategic decisions and navigating the complex landscape of tech entrepreneurship.

As I sat back, pondering what to write next, I realized that my journey was far from over.

There’s still so much to explore and share,” I thought. The interplay of personal experiences, professional challenges, and the ever-evolving tech landscape provided endless stories and insights.

Engaging with the Medium community, my reflections resonated with many. Readers appreciated the blend of technical knowledge and personal anecdotes.

I also remembered my stint at REDtone IoT as the CEO. ”That was a turning point,” I thought.

Taking on the role of CEO was something I never envisioned.

The role demanded technical understanding, strategic vision, and leadership. It was an intense experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me invaluable lessons about business and innovation.

Reflecting on my career, I realized how each phase was interconnected.

My academic background provided a strong foundation, my corporate experience offered practical insights, and my entrepreneurial journey brought everything together.

”It’s all about the journey,” I reminded myself.

Each step, each challenge, and each success was a piece of the more giant puzzle.

As I continued reading the article on Medium, it suggested another crucial aspect: write about what excites you.

What excites me now?” I asked myself.

The answer was clear – mentoring and giving back to the community. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to mentor young professionals, sharing my experiences and guiding them.

This role of mentor was deeply fulfilling, as it allowed me to contribute to the next generation of tech leaders.

I also found joy in public speaking, sharing insights at conferences, and engaging with a global audience.

Each talk is an opportunity to learn and inspire,” I realized.

These engagements connected me to the latest trends and innovations, fueling my passion for continuous learning.

Writing, too, was a way of mentoring – sharing knowledge and experiences through words. The feedback from readers, the discussions sparked by my articles, and the sense of community on platforms like Medium were gratifying.

It’s not just about writing; it’s about connecting,” I reflected.

Looking ahead, I knew there were still many stories to tell.

Stories about the future of IoT, the challenges and opportunities of smart cities, and the personal journey of an entrepreneur navigating the tech world.

Photo by Etienne Girardet on Unsplash

The best stories are yet to be written,” I thought, feeling renewed purpose.

In the end, the article on Medium did more than provide clarity on what to write about. It reminded me of the importance of authenticity, passion, and connection.

Writing is a journey,” I concluded, much like my career. It’s about exploring, reflecting, and sharing – one story at a time.

As I continued to write, I knew I was documenting my journey and inspiring others to embark on their own.

The article’s advice to write about what you know, what excites you, and to be authentic resonated deeply with me.

It’s all about finding your voice,” I realized.

That voice blended technical expertise, personal reflections, and a passion for innovation. And with each article, I felt closer to sharing my journey and creating a legacy of knowledge and inspiration.

So, as I sat down to write my next piece, I felt a sense of clarity and excitement.

What story shall we tell today?” I asked myself, ready to dive into the next chapter of this ongoing adventure.

About Me (Part-10) — Mazlan Abbas

ABOUT ME SERIES

From Obscurity to Influence: My Journey

I often reflect on how my journey in the tech world began, and I am amazed at how far I’ve come. I hope my story will inspire others to start from scratch, just as I did.

My name is Mazlan Abbas, and this is my story of rising from unknown to recognized influencer in IoT and smart cities.

The Beginning

I was born on January 23, 1961, in Malaysia. My fascination with technology started early, fueled by a love for science fiction novels, DC Comics, and childhood cartoons like ‘The Jetsons’ and ‘Land of the Giants.

Captivated by the possibilities of the future, I dreamed of becoming a scientist.

However, dreams are just the beginning; the real journey lies in turning them into reality.

I enjoyed playing the guitar and singing Bee Gees songs as a child.

Sports, particularly badminton, were also a big part of my life.

But it was my passion for technology that ultimately defined my career path. I pursued my Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (BEE) with First Class Honours from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 1984, followed by a Master of Science (MSc) in Telematics from the University of Essex, UK, in 1986. I later earned my Ph.D. in Telecommunications from UTM in 1993.

Stepping into the Professional World

After completing my studies, I entered the telecom industry, starting with CELCOM Axiata. My career spanned various significant roles, including Senior Director at MIMOS Berhad and CEO of REDtone IoT. Eventually, I co-founded and became CEO of FAVORIOT Sdn Bhd. FAVORIOT focuses on IoT solutions, and it was here that my journey as an influencer truly began.

But let me tell you, becoming an influencer didn’t happen overnight. It required a strategic approach, perseverance, and a lot of learning along the way.

The Power of Blogging

One of the first steps I took towards building my influence was through blogging. I started with a simple blog on Blogspot, sharing insights about gadgets. It was a modest beginning, allowing me to express my thoughts and connect with like-minded individuals.

I later transitioned to a more personal blog, writing in Malay and English, and eventually created IoT World to focus on the Internet of Things. Moving to WordPress and Medium, I joined the Medium Partner Program in September 2023.

Blogging was more than just writing articles; it was about sharing my passion and knowledge with a broader audience. It was about creating a space where I could discuss the latest trends in IoT, share my experiences, and offer valuable insights to others.

Embracing Social Media

How do I reach more people?” I often asked myself. The answer was social media. I realized I needed to be where the conversations were happening to have a significant impact.

I started with LinkedIn, a platform ideal for professional networking and sharing industry insights. I gradually built a strong presence by consistently posting articles, sharing updates about my work, and engaging with other professionals.

LinkedIn became my primary platform for connecting with peers, potential collaborators, and industry leaders.

Twitter was another game-changer.

Its fast-paced environment allowed me to share quick updates and thoughts and engage in real-time conversations. It is an excellent tool for staying updated with the latest trends and connecting with a global audience.

How can I make my tweets more engaging?” I would often ponder.

The key was to be authentic, timely, and relevant.

Leveraging Visual Content

Understanding the power of visual content, I ventured into Instagram and YouTube. Instagram allowed me to share glimpses of my professional life, events, and behind-the-scenes moments at FAVORIOT.

It was a platform where I could be more personal and connect with my audience on a different level.

YouTube, on the other hand, was perfect for sharing in-depth content.

I started creating videos about IoT, smart cities, and technology trends. These videos provided a platform to delve deeper into topics, share presentations, and even host interviews with other experts.

What topics would resonate most with my audience?” I would ask myself before creating content.

The goal was always to provide value and educate my viewers.

TikTok: Reaching the Younger Audience

One platform that I was initially hesitant about but eventually embraced was TikTok. Known for its younger demographic and short-form videos, it is an opportunity to inspire the next generation. I started creating educational videos, breaking complex IoT concepts into easily digestible content.

How can I make this fun and informative?” was a question that guided my TikTok strategy.

The response was overwhelming.

TikTok allowed me to reach a demographic that needed to be easier to engage.

It was not just about teaching but also about inspiring young minds to explore the world of technology.

Engaging with the Community

Building an online presence is not just about posting content; it’s about engaging with the community. I made it a point to respond to comments, participate in discussions, and attend virtual events. This engagement helped build a loyal following and fostered a sense of community.

How can I add value to my audience’s lives?” This question was at the core of my engagement strategy.

Every interaction mattered whether I answered a query, provided advice, or acknowledged a comment.

Public Speaking and Conferences

Being a frequent speaker at major conferences also significantly impacted my journey.

These platforms allowed me to share my knowledge, network with industry leaders, and establish myself as a thought leader.

Each speaking engagement allowed me to showcase my expertise and connect with a broader audience.

Writing and Publications

In addition to blogging and social media, writing books and contributing to publications helped solidify my reputation. I authored eBooks like ‘IoT Notes’ and ‘Your IoT Journey,’ sharing my experiences and insights with a broader audience.

These publications were a testament to my expertise and commitment to the field.

Podcasts: “Jom Pakai IoT” and “Startup IoT”

Recognizing the growing popularity of podcasts, I decided to venture into this medium to reach even more people. I launched two podcasts, “Jom Pakai IoT” and “Startup IoT,” available on Spotify, Google, and Apple Podcasts.

These podcasts offer a platform to delve deeper into various IoT topics, share startup experiences, and engage with listeners in a more intimate and accessible format.

How can I provide even more value through audio content?” I asked myself.

The answer lay in creating content that was informative, engaging, and easy to consume for listeners on the go.

Recognition and Awards

Over the years, my efforts began to bear fruit.

I was recognized globally for my contributions to IoT and smart cities.

I was listed in Onalytica’s “Who’s Who in IoT,” ranked among the Top 50 Global Thought Leaders on IoT by Thinkers360, and awarded “Most Impactful Smart Cities Leaders” by the World CSR Congress.

About Me (Part-9) — Mazlan Abbas

ABOUT ME SERIES

Why I Changed the Style of My Writing

The author’s photo was converted to Anime using the “Glam” mobile app.

A familiar doubt crept into my mind as I sat at my desk, staring at the windows beside my room. “Mazlan, who are you kidding? Do you think anyone cares about what you have to say?” I shook my head, trying to dismiss the negative voice, but it lingered, casting a shadow over my thoughts.

This wasn’t the first time I had faced this inner critic, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last.

I’ve always believed in the power of storytelling.

From my early days of reading science fiction novels and DC comics to my recent blogging and public speaking endeavors, I’ve seen how stories can inspire, educate, and transform.

Yet, despite my passion for writing, I often grappled with self-doubt.

I remember vividly the day this all began to change.

It was a rainy afternoon, and I was scrolling through Medium, searching for inspiration.

My eyes landed on an article titled “Once I Stopped Believing This Lie, My Writing Improved 100x.

Intrigued, I clicked on it, not knowing that the words I was about to read would resonate deeply with me.

The author discussed a common lie many writers believe: “You need to be perfect to be successful.

As I read those words, I felt a sense of familiarity wash over me.

Mazlan, isn’t this exactly what you’ve been struggling with?” I thought to myself.

For years, I had been caught in the perfectionism trap, believing every piece of writing had to be flawless before sharing it with the world.

This mindset paralyzed me, preventing me from expressing my true voice and connecting with my audience.

The article explained how this belief in perfectionism was holding writers back.

It encouraged embracing imperfection and viewing writing as a journey rather than a destination.

Why don’t you try this, Mazlan?” I pondered. “What if you allowed yourself to be vulnerable, to make mistakes, and to grow from them?

Determined to break free from the chains of perfectionism, I decided to take a leap of faith.

I began writing with a new mindset, focusing on progress rather than perfection. At first, it was challenging.

The inner critic would often rear its head, whispering, “This isn’t good enough. You should start over.” But I persisted, reminding myself that growth comes from pushing through discomfort.

I started sharing my drafts with a small group of trusted friends and colleagues, seeking their feedback and support.

Their responses were encouraging and constructive, helping me see my writing from different perspectives.

Mazlan, this is a great idea, but maybe you could elaborate more on this point,” one friend suggested. Another added, “I love your storytelling, but try to connect it more with your main argument.

With each piece of feedback, I felt my confidence grow.

I realized that my fear of imperfection had been unfounded.

People appreciated my authentic voice and the insights I shared, even if they weren’t perfectly polished.

My imperfections made my writing more relatable and human.

One of the most significant breakthroughs came when I wrote an article about my journey in the IoT industry.

I shared my successes, but more importantly, I opened up about my struggles and failures.

Mazlan, are you sure you want to share this?” I questioned myself. “What if people judge you?” But I pushed through the doubt and published the article.

To my surprise, the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Readers reached out to me, thanking me for my honesty and sharing their own experiences.

Mazlan, your story resonated with me. I’ve faced similar challenges, and it’s comforting to know I’m not alone,” one reader commented. Another wrote, “Your article inspired me to keep going, even when things get tough.

This experience taught me a valuable lesson: authenticity and vulnerability are potent tools in writing.

We create deeper connections with our audience when we allow ourselves to be seen as imperfect.

Our stories become more relatable, and our messages resonate more profoundly.

As I continued to embrace this new approach to writing, I noticed a significant improvement in my work.

I felt more liberated, creative, and confident.

The words flowed more easily, and I found joy in the writing process again.

Mazlan, this is what writing should feel like,” I reminded myself. “It’s about expressing your truth and connecting with others, not about achieving perfection.

I also began to apply this mindset to other areas of my life.

In my role as the CEO of FAVORIOT, I encouraged my team to embrace imperfection and view challenges as opportunities for growth.

Let’s focus on progress, not perfection,” I often reminded them during our meetings. “Innovation comes from taking risks, learning from our mistakes, and constantly improving.

This shift in mindset had a positive ripple effect throughout the organization.

We became more agile, open to experimentation, and willing to take bold steps toward our vision.

Our projects flourished, and we built stronger relationships with our clients and partners.

Reflecting on my journey, I realize how crucial it is to challenge the lies we tell ourselves.

The belief in perfectionism had held me back for so long, but I unlocked my true potential once I let go of that lie.

Mazlan, if you could go back in time, what would you tell your younger self?” I often ponder. “I would tell him to embrace imperfection, be courageous, and believe in his voice’s power.

Writing is not just about putting words on a page; it’s about sharing a part of ourselves with the world.

It’s about being vulnerable, authentic, and human.

Allowing ourselves to be imperfect opens the door to growth, creativity, and connection.

So, to all the aspiring writers and storytellers, I offer this advice:

Stop believing the lie that you need to be perfect.

Embrace your imperfections, share your unique voice, and trust that your story matters.

Your journey is valuable, and your experiences can inspire and transform others.

As I continue my writing journey, I carry these lessons with me.

Every word I write and every story I share is an opportunity to connect with others and make a positive impact.

Mazlan, keep pushing forward. Your voice is needed in this world,” I tell myself. And with each piece I write, I strive to inspire others to believe in their potential and embrace the beauty of imperfection.

My journey of overcoming the lie of perfectionism has been transformative.

It has allowed me to grow as a writer, a leader, and an individual. By embracing imperfection,

I’ve discovered the true power of storytelling and the profound connections it can create.

I encourage you to embark on this journey with me, to let go of the need for perfection, and to embrace the joy of authentic expression.

Together, we can inspire, connect, and make a difference.

This article captures the essence of my journey as Mazlan Abbas, blending personal anecdotes, self-dialogues, and reflections to convey the transformative power of embracing imperfection in writing and beyond.

How To Create Educational TikTok Videos That Are More Engaging

INFLUENCER’S STORIES

Tips that you can steal, too.

TikTok Channel @iotman2030

Creating educational content on TikTok has been an exciting and transformative journey for me.

As someone deeply invested in the Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities, and telecommunications, I’ve found TikTok to be a surprisingly effective platform for sharing knowledge and engaging with a broader audience.

Leveraging my extensive experience and insights in these fields, I’ve embraced this modern medium to reach not only tech enthusiasts and professionals but also the younger generation, who are the future innovators and leaders in technology.

Embracing the Power of TikTok for Education

TikTok, with its massive and diverse user base, offers a unique opportunity to disseminate educational content in a way that is both engaging and accessible.

The platform’s format prioritizes short, visually engaging videos, forcing content creators to distill complex ideas into concise, digestible segments.

This has been particularly challenging yet rewarding for someone like me, accustomed to the more traditional and extensive modes of academic and professional communication.

When I first considered creating educational content on TikTok, I had to overcome a few biases.

Like many, I initially viewed TikTok as a platform primarily for entertainment – filled with dance challenges, comedic skits, and viral trends. “Is this really the place for educational content?” I wondered.

However, I quickly realized that this environment, brimming with creativity and energy, could be harnessed to make learning fun and engaging.

The potential to reach millions with a single video, inspire curiosity, and stimulate interest in IoT and smart cities was a compelling reason to enter this space.

Crafting Engaging and Informative Content

Balancing engagement with information is the key to successful educational content on TikTok.

How do I capture attention quickly and deliver value concisely?” I asked myself.

Each video must capture attention quickly, usually within the first few seconds, and then deliver value clearly and concisely.

TikTok channel @iotman2030

To achieve this, I focused on a few core strategies:

  1. Visual Appeal and Hook: TikTok’s visual nature means that the first few seconds of a video are critical. “What can I use to grab viewers’ attention immediately?” I thought. I use eye-catching visuals, whether it’s through dynamic text overlays, exciting graphics, or real-world footage of innovative city applications.
  2. Simplifying Complex Concepts: IoT, smart cities, or telecommunications can be quite technical. “How can I break these complex ideas into simpler concepts without losing the essence?” I wondered. For instance, when discussing IoT, I might start with a relatable example, like smart home devices, before diving into more technical aspects.
  3. Storytelling: People are naturally drawn to stories. “How can I frame my educational content within a narrative?” I asked myself. Whether it’s a day in the life of a smart city, the evolution of telecommunications, or the future possibilities with IoT, storytelling makes the content more relatable and memorable.
  4. Interactivity and Engagement: TikTok thrives on interaction. “How do I encourage viewers to engage with my content?” I pondered. I encourage viewers to ask questions, leave comments, and suggest topics for future videos. Responding to these interactions builds a sense of community and helps me understand what the audience is most interested in.

Examples of Successful Educational TikToks

One of the most successful TikTok series I created was “The Basics of IoT”.

How do I introduce complex topics in an approachable way?” I asked. In this series, I started with simple definitions and everyday examples, gradually introducing more complex topics like IoT architecture, security concerns, and future trends.

Each video was short, usually around 60 seconds, and ended with a call-to-action encouraging viewers to ask questions or share their thoughts.

Another popular series was “Smart Cities in Action”.

How can I showcase real-world examples of smart city technologies?” I thought.

Here, I showcased real-world examples, from intelligent traffic management systems to smart waste management solutions.

Using actual footage and data, I could visually demonstrate the impact of these technologies, making the content more tangible and impactful.

Overcoming Challenges

Creating educational content on TikTok has its challenges.

How do I condense a 30-minute lecture into a 60-second video?” I often ask myself.

The primary challenge is the platform’s time constraint.

Condensing a topic I usually discuss in a 30-minute lecture into a 60-second video requires meticulous planning and clarity of thought.

Every second counts, and there’s no room for fluff.

Another challenge is maintaining a consistent posting schedule.

I wondered, “How do I balance regular content creation with my professional commitments?” TikTok’s algorithm favors regular content creation, which can be demanding.

To address this, I plan my content in batches, scripting and recording multiple videos in one session and then scheduling their release over time.

Leveraging TikTok’s Features

TikTok offers several features that can enhance educational content.

How can I use TikTok’s features to make my content more engaging?” I pondered.

Duets, for instance, allow users to create content alongside existing videos.

I’ve used this feature to respond to other tech educators, create collaborative content, and even debunk common myths in the tech world.

The “Stitch” feature is another powerful tool. “How can I highlight significant moments from tech conferences and provide commentary?” I thought.

It allows users to clip and integrate parts of other videos into their own.

I’ve used this to highlight significant moments from tech conferences, share interview snippets with other experts, and provide commentary on current tech news.

Hashtags are essential for reaching a broader audience.

I often ask, “Which hashtags should I use to get my content discovered by users interested in these topics?

Using relevant and trending hashtags helps my content get discovered by users interested in those topics.

I often use hashtags like #IoT, #SmartCity, #TechEducation, and #FutureTech.

Measuring Impact and Feedback

One of the rewarding aspects of creating educational content on TikTok is the immediate feedback and interaction.

How can I gauge the impact of each video?” I wondered.

The platform’s analytics provide valuable insights into which videos are performing well, who is watching them, and how they are being received.

Metrics like view count, likes, shares, and comments help gauge the impact of each video.

Engaging with the audience through comments and direct messages also provides qualitative feedback.

How can I use feedback to improve my content?” I thought.

I’ve received numerous messages from viewers who expressed how a particular video helped them understand a concept better or sparked their interest in pursuing a career in technology.

This kind of feedback is invaluable and serves as a powerful motivator.

The Broader Vision

My foray into TikTok is part of a broader vision to make technology education more accessible and engaging.

How can TikTok help bridge the gap in traditional education?” I pondered.

While effective, traditional modes of education often fail to reach a wider audience due to various barriers, such as cost, accessibility, and engagement.

Platforms like TikTok can bridge this gap, providing high-quality educational content for free and in a format that resonates with today’s digital-native generation.

Furthermore, by creating content on TikTok, I aim to demystify technology and inspire the next generation of tech enthusiasts.

How can I spark curiosity and provide foundational knowledge in IoT and smart cities?” I wondered.

IoT, smart cities, and telecommunications are evolving rapidly, and building a knowledgeable and skilled workforce to drive this evolution is crucial.

I hope to contribute to this goal by sparking curiosity and providing foundational knowledge.

Future Plans

I plan to expand my TikTok content to cover more advanced topics and to incorporate more interactive elements.

What new topics and interactive elements can I introduce?” I thought.

Live sessions are one area I’m particularly excited about.

They offer a real-time platform for deeper engagement, allowing immediate Q&A and more in-depth discussions.

Collaborations with other educators and industry experts are also on the horizon.

How can I enrich my content by bringing in diverse perspectives?” I wondered.

By bringing in diverse perspectives and expertise, the content can be enriched further, providing more value to the audience.

Conclusion

Creating educational content on TikTok has been an enriching journey.

It has challenged me to adapt my communication style, think creatively, and engage with a diverse audience.

How can I continue to make a meaningful impact through TikTok?” I often ask myself.

The feedback and impact have been overwhelmingly positive, reaffirming the potential of this platform as a powerful educational tool.

As I continue to explore and innovate in this space, my goal remains clear: to make learning about technology accessible, engaging, and fun.

How can I inspire and educate the next generation of tech enthusiasts?” I wondered.

Whether it’s a high school student curious about smart cities or a professional looking to deepen their understanding of IoT, I hope my TikTok videos inspire and educate, paving the way for a more technologically savvy future.

In this digital age, where information is abundant and attention spans are short, platforms like TikTok offer a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

How can I foster a community of learners and innovators through this medium?” I thought.

By embracing this medium, I’m not just sharing knowledge; I’m fostering a community of learners and innovators who will shape the future of technology.

And that, to me, is the true power of education.

The Dilemma of Publishing an Article During Weekends

WRITER’S DILEMMA

You never know until you try.

Photo by Hansjörg Keller on Unsplash

When I first stumbled upon the article “Should I Publish an Article During the Weekend?” on Medium, it struck a chord with me.

As someone who has been navigating the waters of writing and publishing for quite some time, the question of timing has often perplexed me.

Does it matter when I hit ‘publish’?” I wondered, staring at my draft on the screen.

My journey through the tech world, academia, and entrepreneurship had taught me many lessons, but the nuances of content publishing were a new frontier.

Photo by Christina @ wocintechchat.com on Unsplash

Should I write on weekdays or weekends?” This question stayed with me as I remembered my first experience on Medium.

It was a leap into the unknown, driven by a desire to share my insights on IoT, smart cities, and the myriad experiences that shaped my career.

But timing?

That seemed like a trivial detail at first, yet the more I delved into it, the more I realized its potential impact.

I began reflecting on my routine. ”Weekdays are hectic,” I thought, considering the endless stream of meetings, emails, and the constant juggling act that defined my professional life.

On the other hand, weekends offered a semblance of calm – a time to unwind and reflect.

Photo by Haley Phelps on Unsplash

Isn’t that when most people have time to read?” I pondered, but the article seemed to indicate otherwise.

The author mentioned the importance of understanding your audience.

Who am I writing for?” I asked myself.

My readers were diverse – tech enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, academics, and students.

What are they doing on weekends?” I pondered, realizing that their routines might be as varied as mine.

Some might catch up on industry trends, while others might seek inspiration or practical advice for the week ahead.

Photo by Markus Winkler on Unsplash

I analyzed the performance of my past articles, pulling up the analytics to look at the numbers.

Interestingly, I noticed that the articles I published on weekdays seemed to garner more immediate attention.

I speculated whether it was because people were in work mode, thinking about how my own reading habits shifted depending on the day.

I remembered a conversation I had with a fellow entrepreneur.

Timing is everything,” he had said, referring to product launches and marketing campaigns.

Could the same apply to articles?” I wondered, seeing a parallel.

In the corporate world, we meticulously planned the timing of announcements to maximize impact.

Photo by Jaelynn Castillo on Unsplash

Maybe I should adopt a similar strategy here,” I thought, feeling a new sense of purpose.

Reflecting on my time at CELCOM Axiata and later at FAVORIOT, I realized how crucial timing had been in different contexts.

Whether it was launching a new product or rolling out an update, we always considered the timing to ensure maximum reach and engagement.

Why should publishing articles be any different?” I asked myself, drawing on these experiences.

Photo by Emma Simpson on Unsplash

The article suggested that weekdays, particularly mornings, were optimal for publishing.

Mornings, huh?” I wondered, thinking about my morning routine. Mornings were a time of high energy and focus, ideal for absorbing new information.

Could this be the sweet spot for my readers too?” I considered planning my next move.

But then, the weekends held a certain charm.

What about the readers who prefer leisurely reading?” I wondered.

I often enjoyed diving into long reads on weekends, with a cup of coffee and no pressing deadlines.

Surely, there are others like me,” I reasoned, contemplating a balanced approach.

I decided to experiment. ”Let’s test this theory,” I thought, planning to publish similar articles at different times and track the results.

Photo by Sonja Langford on Unsplash

This data-driven approach felt familiar, akin to the analytics we used at FAVORIOT to refine our IoT solutions.

It’s all about learning and adapting,” I reminded myself, a principle that had guided me through various phases of my career.

In the following weeks, I meticulously tracked the performance of my articles.

Interesting,” I noted, observing a pattern.

Weekday mornings indeed saw higher engagement, but there was a significant, albeit smaller, spike on weekends.

Maybe it’s more about consistency and quality than timing, I pondered, considering the bigger picture.

Photo by Manja Vitolic on Unsplash

This experiment reminded me of the early days of FAVORIOT.

Every decision was a hypothesis,” I recalled, from product features to market strategies.

We tested, learned, and iterated. The same applied to my writing journey.

Keep experimenting,” I told myself, knowing each article was a step towards better understanding my audience.

Engagement was another crucial factor mentioned in the article.

How do I keep readers hooked?” I asked, reflecting on my content.

It wasn’t just about the timing but also about creating value.

What do my readers want to read?” I wondered as I delved into comments and feedback.

One piece of feedback stood out.

Photo by Maegan Martin on Unsplash

A reader appreciated the blend of technical insights and personal anecdotes in one of my articles.

Stories resonate,” I realized, drawing from my experience as a public speaker.

Whenever I shared personal stories in my talks, the audience connected more deeply.

Let’s bring more of that into my writing,” I decided, planning to weave in more personal narratives.

I remembered a particular talk I gave at an international conference.

It was the story of my transition from academia to entrepreneurship that captivated the audience,” I reflected.

Photo by Matthew Osborn on Unsplash

Sharing the challenges, the uncertainties, and the triumphs made the message relatable and impactful.

Authenticity is key,” I noted, committing to more honest and open writing.

The article also touched on the importance of headlines.

Headlines are the first impression,” I thought, considering the countless articles I had skimmed through just because the headline didn’t grab me.

Crafting compelling headlines became a new focus. ”How do I make it irresistible?” I asked, experimenting with different styles.

I remembered the marketing campaigns we ran at FAVORIOT.

A catchy tagline can make all the difference,” I recalled.

Applying this to my writing, I spent more time crafting headlines that piqued curiosity and promised value.

Photo by Jack Hunter on Unsplash

It’s an art,” I realized, feeling a renewed sense of creativity.

As weeks turned into months, my understanding of Medium’s dynamics deepened.

It’s a continuous learning process,” I acknowledged, embracing the journey.

I noticed that articles published with thoughtful timing, compelling headlines, and rich narratives consistently performed better.

It’s about the whole package,” I concluded, seeing the interplay of various elements.

I also paid attention to the feedback loop.

Engage with your readers,” the article had advised.

This resonated with me deeply.

Engaging with stakeholders has always been crucial in my professional life. I have also been very actively engaged on my social media channels.

Photo by Brooke Cagle on Unsplash

Why should it be any different here?” I wondered, responding to comments and messages with genuine interest.

One particular interaction stood out.

A young entrepreneur from another part of the world had reached out, inspired by my story.

Your journey gave me the courage to start my venture,” he wrote.

This touched me profoundly.

This is why I write,” I realized, to inspire and connect.

Reflecting on my career, I saw how each phase had its own set of challenges and learning curves.

From academia to the corporate world, and then to entrepreneurship, each transition required adaptation and growth.

Photo by israel palacio on Unsplash

Writing is another chapter,” I told myself, an extension of my journey.

The article also mentioned the importance of self-promotion.

”Don’t be shy about sharing your work,” it advised.

This was something I had struggled with initially.

”Is it too self-promotional?” I often wondered.

But I realized that if I believed in the value of my content, sharing it was not just about promoting myself but about reaching those who could benefit from it.

I remembered the early days of FAVORIOT, pitching to investors and partners.

You have to believe in your vision,” I reminded myself.

Photo by Randy Tarampi on Unsplash

The same applied to my writing.

I began sharing my articles more confidently on social media, leveraging my network to amplify my reach.

It’s about spreading knowledge,” I told myself, seeing the positive responses.

As I continued writing and publishing, I also focused on improving my craft.

There’s always room for growth,” I reminded myself, seeking feedback from peers and readers.

I read extensively and analyzed successful articles to understand what made them work.

Learning never stops,” I noted, a principle that had guided me throughout my career.

The article also emphasized the importance of resilience.

Not every article will be a hit,” it cautioned.

This was a lesson I knew well from my entrepreneurial journey.

Failures are stepping stones,” I reminded myself, recalling the numerous setbacks and rejections I had faced.

Each one had taught me something valuable, shaping the path forward.

I remember a particularly challenging project at MIMOS, where we faced numerous technical hurdles.

Persistence paid off,” I reflected, seeing the parallels with my writing journey.

Some articles might not perform as expected, but each was an opportunity to learn and improve.

Keep going,” I encouraged myself, embracing the process.

Photo by Anthony Tori on Unsplash

As I sat down to write each day, I felt a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

This is part of my legacy,” I realized, a way to share my journey and insights with a broader audience.

Each article reflected my experiences, a blend of technical knowledge, and personal stories.

It’s about making a difference,” I told myself, feeling renewed motivation.

Looking back, the article “Should I Publish an Article During the Weekend?” had been a catalyst for deeper reflection and growth.

After hours of contemplation, I leaned back in my chair and sighed.

There’s no perfect answer, is there?” I concluded.

Sometimes, you just have to go with your gut.” I decided to take the plunge.

I’ll publish this weekend and see what happens,” I said with newfound determination.

After all, life is about taking risks and learning from them.

As I hit the publish button, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. “Here’s to hoping it resonates,” I thought.

Regardless of the outcome, I knew I was staying true to my voice and my passion for sharing knowledge.

That’s what matters most, doesn’t it?” I smiled, confident in my decision.

What about you? Did you publish on weekends too?
