I often reflect on how my journey in the tech world began, and I am amazed at how far I’ve come. I hope my story will inspire others to start from scratch, just as I did.

My name is Mazlan Abbas, and this is my story of rising from unknown to recognized influencer in IoT and smart cities.

The Beginning

I was born on January 23, 1961, in Malaysia. My fascination with technology started early, fueled by a love for science fiction novels, DC Comics, and childhood cartoons like ‘The Jetsons’ and ‘Land of the Giants.

Captivated by the possibilities of the future, I dreamed of becoming a scientist.

However, dreams are just the beginning; the real journey lies in turning them into reality.

I enjoyed playing the guitar and singing Bee Gees songs as a child.

Sports, particularly badminton, were also a big part of my life.

But it was my passion for technology that ultimately defined my career path. I pursued my Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (BEE) with First Class Honours from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 1984, followed by a Master of Science (MSc) in Telematics from the University of Essex, UK, in 1986. I later earned my Ph.D. in Telecommunications from UTM in 1993.

Stepping into the Professional World

After completing my studies, I entered the telecom industry, starting with CELCOM Axiata. My career spanned various significant roles, including Senior Director at MIMOS Berhad and CEO of REDtone IoT. Eventually, I co-founded and became CEO of FAVORIOT Sdn Bhd. FAVORIOT focuses on IoT solutions, and it was here that my journey as an influencer truly began.

But let me tell you, becoming an influencer didn’t happen overnight. It required a strategic approach, perseverance, and a lot of learning along the way.

One of the first steps I took towards building my influence was through blogging. I started with a simple blog on Blogspot, sharing insights about gadgets. It was a modest beginning, allowing me to express my thoughts and connect with like-minded individuals.

I later transitioned to a more personal blog, writing in Malay and English, and eventually created IoT World to focus on the Internet of Things. Moving to WordPress and Medium, I joined the Medium Partner Program in September 2023.

Blogging was more than just writing articles; it was about sharing my passion and knowledge with a broader audience. It was about creating a space where I could discuss the latest trends in IoT, share my experiences, and offer valuable insights to others.

How do I reach more people?” I often asked myself. The answer was social media. I realized I needed to be where the conversations were happening to have a significant impact.

I started with LinkedIn, a platform ideal for professional networking and sharing industry insights. I gradually built a strong presence by consistently posting articles, sharing updates about my work, and engaging with other professionals.

LinkedIn became my primary platform for connecting with peers, potential collaborators, and industry leaders.

Twitter was another game-changer.

Its fast-paced environment allowed me to share quick updates and thoughts and engage in real-time conversations. It is an excellent tool for staying updated with the latest trends and connecting with a global audience.

How can I make my tweets more engaging?” I would often ponder.

Understanding the power of visual content, I ventured into Instagram and YouTube. Instagram allowed me to share glimpses of my professional life, events, and behind-the-scenes moments at FAVORIOT.

It was a platform where I could be more personal and connect with my audience on a different level.

YouTube, on the other hand, was perfect for sharing in-depth content.

I started creating videos about IoT, smart cities, and technology trends. These videos provided a platform to delve deeper into topics, share presentations, and even host interviews with other experts.

What topics would resonate most with my audience?” I would ask myself before creating content.

The goal was always to provide value and educate my viewers.

Each IoT product development journey is an odyssey filled with insights, challenges, and evolution. Today, I share the narrative of our fourth IoT venture, Dscover, and how it became a transformative segment of our IoT suite.

The Genesis of Dscover

The seeds for Dscover were sown amid the successful launch of our first IoT product, Raqib, in 2018. At this crossroads, feedback was not just a guide but a compass that pointed us toward innovation.

While Raqib was making strides, and as we progressed with Favorsense and the Favoriot IoT platform, there was a budding notion that it was time to chart a new path.

That’s when Dscover started to take shape.

Understanding the Underlying Need

With Raqib, we ventured into tracking solutions beyond the Bluetooth smartwatch and smartphone. Yet, it became clear that our users’ interests lay elsewhere.

They needed a different kind of tracking — one that provided safety and connectivity, especially while traveling. The market demanded a solution that prioritized security without compromising the freedom of the individual or group.

This was the crux that led to the ideation of Dscover.

Embracing Market Realities

Initially, our eyes were set on the bustling Travel and Tourism market. However, the onset of the pandemic in 2020 drastically altered the landscape and our strategies.

We had to pivot quickly, transforming Dscover into a tool for families and friends to stay connected despite global travel restrictions.

The Decision for an App-Centric Approach

Selecting a mobile application as the vessel for Dscover was strategic.

It was a nod to cost-effectiveness, leveraging existing smartphone technology, and aligning with the ease of deployment through app stores.

The aim was to create an unobtrusive yet powerful tool that users could integrate into their daily lives.

Tackling Go-to-Market Hurdles

The B2C model presented unique challenges, particularly in understanding and targeting user demographics through social media.

One stumbling block we encountered was the app’s initial name, “D’scover.” It proved problematic for searchability, leading us to the pivotal decision to rename it “Dscover.” (Note: Later, we observed that the spelling “Dscover” and how we pronounce it as “Discover” became a big misunderstanding in searching in the App store)

The initial B2B strategy targeted travel agencies and governments, but we widened our scope as the pandemic reshaped the world.

We even considered using Dscover for monitoring quarantined patients, an idea that, despite its potential, did not gain official traction.

Favorsense followed, benefitting from the lessons Raqib taught us. It reached the market in just a year, showing how far we had come.

Each piece of feedback was a nugget of gold, offering us insights that we would use to refine and enhance the product to meet our users’ needs better.

The Unplanned Masterpiece: Favoriot

Favoriot began as an undercurrent, a middleware solution developed during our other projects. It became clear that we had more than just middleware; it was a platform with the potential to stand independently.

The introduction of a pricing model in March 2019, following a period of free trials that provided invaluable user insights, was a pivotal moment in Favoriot’s story.

Navigating Through Challenges

Each product brought its own trials and tribulations. Despite our strong ties with the academic world, finding the right talent proved more difficult than anticipated.

While students showed enthusiasm for IoT, the absence of a structured IoT curriculum and a shortage of skilled professionals were barriers we needed to overcome.

A Market of Untapped Potential

The potential was undeniable, with the IoT market expected to grow exponentially. In Malaysia, a country that officially stepped into the IoT arena only a few years back, Favoriot could be the cornerstone for commercial IoT deployment and education.

Favoriot: More Than Just a Product

Favoriot was envisaged as more than a product — a gateway for innovation. Accessible to students and professionals alike, Favoriot promised security, ease of use, and support for various protocols.

It was designed to foster innovation while ensuring data ownership remained with the users.

Our platform, offered as a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), was complemented by different subscription plans, a community for shared learning, and a wealth of documentation and tutorials.
