Why I Felt That Writing is an Adventure

WRITER’S STORIES

The Call to Adventure

Photo by Holly Mandarich on Unsplash

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of being an adventurer, exploring uncharted territories and uncovering hidden treasures.

While I don’t carry a compass or a backpack, I’ve realised that my journey as a writer on Medium mirrors the life of an explorer.

Every article I write feels like stepping into the unknown, like embarking on a new expedition.

The journey began with a single question: What should I write about? It was as if I stood at the edge of a dense forest, staring at countless paths ahead. The possibilities felt thrilling yet intimidating.

Should I write about IoT? Entrepreneurship? Or something completely different?” I wondered. It was like being a novice explorer, equipped with no map and only a vague sense of direction.

But I knew one thing: staying put was not an option.

The First Step

Photo by Andrew Neel on Unsplash

Taking that first step was the hardest.

I decided to write about something close to my heart — IoT.

The words felt clunky as I typed, like trudging through a thick jungle. Doubts crept in: Is this good enough? Will anyone read this?

It’s not about perfection,” I reminded myself, echoing a lesson I’d read about explorers. “It’s about taking the journey.

When I published my first article, it felt like finding a small clearing in the forest. It wasn’t groundbreaking, but it was progress. “You did it,” I told myself. “What’s next?

Navigating New Terrain

With each article, I ventured deeper into the unknown.

Some topics were like familiar trails that were easy to navigate. Others felt like steep mountains, daunting and full of uncertainty.

The first time I attempted to write about a personal experience, stepping outside my usual IoT expertise.

Will anyone care about this story?” I hesitated, staring at the screen.

It felt like standing at the base of a towering peak.

But as I wrote, I discovered something powerful: authenticity and vulnerability were like ropes and harnesses, helping me climb those intimidating heights.

When readers commented, “This resonated with me,” it felt like reaching the summit.

The view from the top was worth every moment of doubt.

Facing Setbacks

Not every journey went as planned.

I remember pouring my energy into an article about smart cities, only to see it receive minimal views.

What went wrong?” I asked myself, frustrated.

It felt like wandering through a desert, searching for water but finding none. But even in those moments, I learned valuable lessons.

Like an adventurer adapting to the terrain, I realised I needed to experiment with different topics and perspectives.

Every setback became an opportunity to recalibrate my compass.

Discovering Hidden Treasures

Photo by Scott Goodwill on Unsplash

One of the most rewarding aspects of being an adventurer is stumbling upon hidden treasures, and writing offers plenty.

Sometimes, it was an unexpected idea that turned into a well-received article.

Other times, it was a connection with a reader who shared how my words impacted them.

I recall writing about how IoT could revolutionise agriculture, thinking the topic was too niche.

To my surprise, it became one of my most-read pieces. “This is your treasure,” I told myself. “Even the smallest ideas can hold immense value.

Finding Fellow Travellers

Every adventurer needs a tribe, and the Medium community became mine. Fellow writers shared tips, encouragement, and camaraderie.

I remember a comment on one of my articles: “Your story gave me the courage to share my own.

It felt like meeting another traveller at a campfire, exchanging stories that inspire and uplift. “Keep going,” they said. “You’re on the right path.

Embracing Risks

What’s an adventure without risks?

Sometimes I stepped far outside my comfort zone, tackling controversial topics or experimenting with new styles.

It felt like crossing a rickety bridge over a canyon.

What if this fails?” I often asked myself. However, I knew that growth required pushing boundaries. Even when I stumbled, the experience taught me resilience and courage.

The Journey, Not the Destination

Photo by Danka & Peter on Unsplash

Over time, I realised that writing, like adventuring, isn’t about reaching a final destination.

It’s about the discoveries, challenges, and growth along the way. Each article became a chapter in my story, marking where I’d been and how far I’d come.

One day, someone asked, “Why do you keep writing?

I smiled and replied, “Because I’m not done exploring.

Looking Ahead

Writing has shown me that the world of ideas is vast and limitless.

There’s always another path to take, another treasure to find, another story to tell.

Each article is a new expedition filled with twists, turns, and surprises.

As an adventurer of words, I’ve learned this: the journey is far from over.

The horizon stretches endlessly, and I can’t wait to see what lies beyond.

The Dubai Trip That Nearly Turned Into a Saga

DUBAI TRIP

Unforgettable experience

The day that we arrived on April 17, 2024

My recent trip to Dubai, from April 17 to 19, 2024, was an adventure I’ll never forget. It was supposed to be a straightforward business trip for a conference and MOU signing, but it quickly turned into a saga defined by an unusual wardrobe malfunction.

As I stood at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the attendant at the check-in counter informed me of our flight’s delay due to severe weather and flooding in Dubai.

Little did I know, this was just the beginning of an unexpected journey that would test my adaptability and sense of humor.

Upon arriving in Dubai, my first hint that this trip would be out of the ordinary came when our baggage failed to appear on the carousel. “We’ll just head to the hotel and pick it up tomorrow,” I reassured my fellow delegates from Cybersecurity Malaysia, Malaysia Airports Holdings, and a journalist from Bernama.

We were optimistic, not yet realizing the full extent of the chaos caused by the flood’s aftermath at Dubai International Airport.

The true challenge began the next morning.

making an attempt the next day to pick our bags.

When we returned to the airport, the scene at the Lost and Found was chaotic, to say the least. Despite assurances that our luggage would be available shortly, the minutes turned into hours with no resolution in sight.

The delay meant I had no choice but to attend the conference in the same clothes I had worn since leaving Malaysia — a bright red shirt that made me stand out starkly against a backdrop of white robes and formal business attire.

Signing an MOU but wearing the same shirt.

Standing there in my red shirt, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of embarrassment and amusement. “Of all the days to be a walking fashion emergency,” I mused to myself, trying to inject some humor into the situation.

As I walked into the conference room, feeling every eye on me, I found myself grappling with a whirlwind of emotions — self-consciousness, frustration, but also a reluctant acceptance of my predicament.

As I prepared to speak, I took a moment to gather my thoughts. “Here goes nothing,” I whispered under my breath, stepping up to the podium. The room was filled with dignitaries and professionals, all impeccably dressed.

I couldn’t help but feel like a sore thumb, glaringly out of place.

Remember the colour.

However, their warmth eased my anxiety, and I found myself relaxing into the talk, my initial discomfort slowly ebbing away.

What followed was a surprising twist; my bright red shirt, initially a source of embarrassment, became a talking point.

Post-event discussions weren’t just about cybersecurity and collaborations; they included light-hearted banter about the resilience needed not just in our professional tasks but in handling life’s unpredictable challenges.

You’ve certainly made this event memorable,” chuckled a friend of mine, a comment that sparked a series of friendly exchanges that might not have occurred had I blended in seamlessly.

Returning to the airport that night, and after another long wait and a battle through a disorganized system, we finally managed to retrieve our bags.

The relief of being reunited with my luggage was profound, yet the ordeal had left an indelible mark on my experience.

It was a relief to be able to change our clothes before returning to Malaysia on April 19, 2024.

Reflecting on the events, I realized that this trip was more than just a business engagement; it was a testament to the human spirit’s adaptability.

The discomfort of wearing the same, uncharacteristically casual attire in a formal setting forced me to confront and overcome my insecurities about appearance and professionalism.

The ordeal taught me that while clothes might contribute to a first impression, it’s resilience and the ability to maintain composure under pressure that truly define one’s character.

This trip, with its unexpected trials, highlighted the importance of embracing the unexpected with grace and humor, making it a truly unforgettable experience.

Actually I regretted one thing — I should have bought a pair of clothes just before the event but then, it would not be any exciting story to tell, eh?

Darling Harbour’s Nighttime Magic

My Travelogue

A Symphony of Lights

The Eye of Sydney

It’s one of those places that just sticks with you, you know?

Right there in Sydney, Australia, it turns into something straight out of a dream at night, especially when the fireworks are on.

The whole vibe of the place changes as the sun sets.

It’s like the energy levels just dial up, with everyone coming out to soak in the nightlife.

There I was, mingling with both locals and tourists, all of us drawn by that buzz.

We’d grab a bite at one of the waterfront restaurants, laughing and chatting, all while waiting for the night’s main show.

And let me tell you, those fireworks are something else!

They’re not just any old fireworks; they’re an art form over there, lighting up the sky in a way that just captivates you.

It’s like they’re dancing across the harbour, reflecting off the water, and just for that moment, everything feels magical.

The view?

Absolutely killer.

You’ve got the city lights, the harbour waters, and these bursts of color all in one go.

It’s the kind of view you want to bottle up and keep with you forever.

There’s no shortage of things to do either.

One moment you’re tapping your foot to some live band, and the next, you’re caught up watching some street performer.

It’s this mix of sights and sounds that keeps the whole place feeling alive.

The food scene is top-notch, too.

Imagine sitting there with your favorite dish, the fireworks painting the sky above you, and just feeling like this is exactly where you’re meant to be.

And if you want to mix things up, there’s always something happening at the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium or the WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo right nearby.

Getting around is a breeze, and the whole area’s just so welcoming. It’s like Darling Harbour’s got this way of making everyone feel at home.

Those fireworks nights are a real treat – they turn a regular evening into a celebration of just… everything.

Honestly, that vacation was unforgettable.

Between the sheer beauty of it all, the endless entertainment, and that indescribable feeling of being part of something bigger, Darling Harbour at night is just unbeatable.

It’s not just a place; it’s an experience, one that I’ll always look back on with a big, goofy smile.

Poem: Whispers of Dawn in Kuala Lumpur City

My Travelogue Poem

Melting Pot Serenade

Photo by Muhammad Faiz Zulkeflee on Unsplash

In the glow of dawn, my dear Kuala Lumpur rises,

Bathed in soft hues, the city surprises.

A melting pot awakened under morning’s first light,

Cultures blend seamlessly, an inspiring sight.

Malay, Chinese, Indian, each greets the day,

In every smile, gesture, a shared way.

As the sun ascends, the city’s heart beats anew,

In every corner, every hue, unity we view.

Photo by Jayden Sim on Unsplash

Beneath Petronas Towers, morning’s first rays gleam,

Reflecting dreams and hopes, a collective esteem.

Sultan Abdul Samad’s silhouette against the sky,

Bears witness to history, as time goes by.

At sunrise, street vendors their delicacies prepare,

Aromas waft, inviting, a culinary affair.

As dusk falls, dining under a sky so vast,

In every flavor, the essence of Kuala Lumpur cast.

Photo by Kelvin Zyteng on Unsplash

Shops aglow at twilight, under a canopy of stars,

From day’s end to night’s start, the city never mars.

Treasures found, memories made in evening’s embrace,

In Kuala Lumpur’s markets, a multicultural trace.

Green spaces flourish in the day’s first and last light,

An urban oasis, morning and evening’s delight.

A serene interlude from the city’s rapid pace,

In gardens and parks, nature’s gentle face.

Economic vitality pulses, from dawn till dusk,

In Kuala Lumpur’s fervor, a city robust.

As day transitions to night, ambitions soar,

In this metropolis, opportunities galore.

Cultural expressions flourish in the light of dawn and eve,

In art and performance, what we conceive.

The city’s soul in these moments, vividly unfurled,

In Kuala Lumpur’s canvas, a masterpiece world.

With connectivity that spans, as day shifts to night,

Kuala Lumpur stands resolute, a beacon of light.

A crossroads of the world, in every morning’s new start,

In every sunset, the city’s enduring heart.

So here I witness, in the light of dawn and dusk,

Kuala Lumpur, my pride, in tranquility and bustle, robust.

A jewel of Malaysia, in sunrise and sunset’s glow,

In every moment, every day, its beauty we bestow.

Exploring San Francisco’s Icons: Pier 39 and the Crookedest Street

San Francisco’s Must-Sees

My Day Exploring San Francisco’s Treasures

Author at Pier 39

Did you know where do I even kick off about my awesome day in San Fran?

So, I hit Pier 39 first, and man, it was buzzing!

The moment you step there, it’s like the place just grabs you.

There’s laughter everywhere, tourists snapping pics, and oh, those sea lions!

They’re just chilling and goofing around, stealing the show without even trying.

Shops everywhere!

I meandered through the pier, soaking up every bit of it — the killer views of the Bay, Alcatraz chilling out there in the water, and the Golden Gate Bridge looking all majestic.

It felt unreal, like I’d walked right into a postcard, only this was way cooler because I was actually living it.

I ducked into a bunch of quirky shops, grabbed some funky keepsakes, and oh, the food!

You’ve gotta try the clam chowder there; it’s a game changer!

The crookedest street in the world

Then, as if the day wasn’t epic enough, I rolled over to Lombard Street, the one that looks like a squiggly line gone wild.

They call it “the crookedest street in the world,” and it’s no joke.

Driving down those hairpin turns was like a slow-mo thrill ride with epic scenery thrown in.

The gardens on either side were popping with color, and those cute Victorian houses just oozed charm.

I couldn’t resist snapping a ton of pics.

Like, every turn was a new postcard-worthy view, with the city spread out below just showing off.

I even got chatting with some other tourists, swapping stories and tips. It’s just one of those spots where everyone’s in a good mood, you know?

Author at Lombard Street

So, yeah, Pier 39 and Lombard Street?

Totally unforgettable.

If you’re ever in San Francisco, you can’t miss them.

They’ve got this unique vibe that sums up everything cool about the city.

Trust me, you’ll have a blast and get some amazing memories (and photos) to take home!

From Golden Gate Grandeur to Pier 39 Playfulness

Engineering Marvels and Marine Delights: A San Francisco Journey

My trip to San Francisco was an absolute blast!

From Majestic Spans to Playful Clans – Discovering San Francisco’s Charms

Author at Golden Gate Bridge, San Fran

First up, the Golden Gate Bridge.

Wow, just wow.

Seeing it in person is a whole different ball game compared to the pictures.

That iconic International Orange color popping against the blue sky is something else.

From far — the iconic bridge

Walking across it, I was in awe of not just the view but the sheer scale of it all.

You really get why it’s such a big deal — the history, the architecture, it all hits you at once.

And those views? Unreal! I could see Alcatraz, the city skyline, the whole bay area laid out in front of me.

It’s not just a bridge; it’s a masterpiece that tells a story.

Pier 39 — San Francisco

Now, onto the seals at Pier 39.

They’re hilarious!

Just lounging around, barking, and playing without a care in the world.

It’s such a quirky and fun part of San Francisco that you wouldn’t expect to find in the middle of a bustling city.

Learning about their conservation success story was pretty cool too.

It’s amazing how they’ve become such stars, drawing crowds every day.

And the best part? It’s totally free.

You just show up, hang out, and enjoy the show.

The seals of Pier 39

Both spots are just dripping with that San Francisco charm.

The bridge gives you this grand, historic vibe, while the seals add a laid-back, playful touch.

It’s like getting a taste of two very different sides of the city, and I loved every bit of it.

If you’re ever in San Fran, these are the must-visit spots, hands down.

They’re not just tourist attractions; they’re experiences that stick with you.

Dubai Diaries: A Tale of Two Cities

My Travelogue

Lost in Time: Unraveling the Mysteries of Old and New Dubai

Let me tell you about my trip to Dubai …

It was like jumping straight into a sci-fi movie, but with a twist of history that just blew my mind.

Author in Dubai

Imagine standing under the shadow of the Burj Khalifa, feeling like an ant next to this towering giant.

It’s not just a building; it’s a statement, showing off what humans can achieve.

The Burj Khalifa

And then there’s the luxury — I felt like royalty stepping into the Burj Al Arab, even if just for a peek, and the Dubai Mall was like shopping in a small city!

But Dubai isn’t just about the glitz and glam.

I got to dive into some really cool, futuristic stuff too.

Visiting the Palm Jumeirah was like seeing a world map redrawn by humans.

Palm Jumeirah

And the Dubai Frame?

It’s this crazy picture frame that lets you see the old and new Dubai in one shot, literally framing the city’s transformation.

Dubai Malls

Now, the nightlife there is something else. Every night felt like a weekend, with endless bars and clubs buzzing with people from all over the globe. It’s this melting pot of cultures, and I loved the vibe — so welcoming and vibrant.

Dubai at Night

But here’s the thing: Dubai isn’t just this futuristic city; it’s got its soul in the old streets too. Wandering through the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, I felt like I’d time-traveled. The wind towers, the cobbled streets, and those cozy art galleries gave me a glimpse into a Dubai that once was, long before the skyscrapers.

The souks were a whole adventure on their own. Bartering in the Gold Souk and sniffing through the Spice Souk, I got a taste of the old-world charm. And the food! Oh, the food in the old city was just heartwarming — authentic Emirati dishes that made my taste buds dance.

Riding an Abra on Dubai Creek

Riding an abra on Dubai Creek was the cherry on top.

It’s like this simple, wooden boat cut through all the modernity and just floated me back in time.

So peaceful, yet so full of life.

So, yeah, Dubai is this incredible blend of then and now.

One minute I’m gawking at the tallest building in the world, and the next,

I’m sipping tea in a centuries-old alleyway.

It’s a place that shows you where humanity has been and where it’s going, all in one day.

And that, my friend, is why my trip to Dubai was absolutely unforgettable.

Why Some Entrepreneurs Succeeded While Others Failed

Photo by Tyler Nix on Unsplash

Have you ever wondered why two entrepreneurs will never achieve the same level of success even though they graduated from the same class?

Or whether they have gone through the same workplace as colleagues?

Or have they worked under the same boss?

Or have they gone through the same entrepreneurship Masterclass?

Or do they have the same amount of money in their pockets when they set up their Startups?

Or they might even have the same mentors?

That’s what I have been wondering for years when I started my entrepreneurship journey.

All my friend’s journeys have different paths, and so do I.

Are You Making the Right Decisions?

The paths you will take when you are at the junction trying to decide which way to take.

You might see a simple two pathways, but sometimes it can be multiple paths.

This is when your head, mind, and emotions will take place.

Are you a risk taker? Will you take a riskier path, but will it be a faster way to success?

Or take a safer way, but will it be a slow path to success?

Do you have anything else you need to factor in, such as what happens to your family members if you take this path?

Roads are Bumpy, and the Jungle Can Be Treacherous

And the moment you take a particular path, you will never know the next corner will be a dead end or the road to success.

At times, your emotions can be so down that you make an emotional decision that leads to another path.

Photo by Karl Anderson on Unsplash

Friends or Guides Along the Roads

You might meet many enemies but make great friends or guides along the way.

Lucky you!

But as you look back, you might see your friend who started at the same time as you might have taken another path.

You can say “hi,” but you can’t take a step or return to the same path. It’s ok late to turn around.

Digging For Gold

Photo by Raul De Los Santos on Unsplash

When you have reached your destination for digging the gold, you might think a one day’s effort is sufficient, but then you realize you get nothing.

You dig again for the second day—still nothing.

Dig again for the third and fourth day, but still nothing?

After a month or a year, you might give up, but then again, you can see your friend at the end smiling and shouting, “Eureka!” He got his gold.

You dig again for several months, and still nothing. Only to realize you are digging on the wrong side.

You walked away.

But later, other people were digging at the same site as yours, and they, too, shouted, “Eureka!”

You regret your decision to stop digging because if you tried a little harder, you might find your gold, too.

Entrepreneurship is Like An Adventure

Every step will be different from the others when you step into the entrepreneurship world.

You can be like a gold digger.

You can be like a ship’s captain sailing into the stormy seas.

You can be like taking a roller coaster ride.

Or jumping from 50,000 ft and trying to build an airplane.

Or you are adventuring into a thick jungle, wondering what kind of terrain and wild animals are waiting for you.

Key Lessons Learned:

1. Entrepreneurship is Unpredictable: The path to success is not linear. Entrepreneurs must navigate through unexpected challenges and opportunities.

2. Decision-Making is Crucial: At every juncture, entrepreneurs face critical decisions that can drastically alter their path. Weighing risks and potential rewards is a constant process.

3. Emotional Resilience is Key: Emotional highs and lows are part of the journey. Maintaining emotional resilience is essential for enduring tough times.

4. Support Systems Matter: Along the way, the support of friends, mentors, or guides can be invaluable. However, their paths and successes may differ from yours.

5. Persistence is Essential: Just like digging for gold, sometimes success requires persistent effort and the belief that your efforts will eventually pay off.

6. Adaptability is Important: Entrepreneurs must be adaptable and ready to change course or strategy in response to new information or changing circumstances.

7. Regret Can Be a Learning Tool: Looking back at missed opportunities or paths not taken can provide valuable lessons for future endeavors.

8. Every Journey is Unique: No two entrepreneurial journeys are the same. Comparing your path to others can be misleading; focus instead on your unique trip and goals.

9. Risk-Taking Varies: Different entrepreneurs have different appetites for risk, which influences the paths they choose and the outcomes they achieve.

10. The End is Not Always Clear: The ‘gold’ or success you seek might not be where or what you initially expect. Flexibility in defining success can lead to unexpected rewards.
