Why You Should Write From the Heart

WRITER’S JOURNEY

Let not the fear of imperfection or judgment deter you. Your voice is unique, and your stories are necessary.

Photo by Jamie Street on Unsplash

As I sit to pen down my thoughts in this tranquil corner of my study, surrounded by books and artifacts that tell tales of my past ventures, I am transported back to the beginning of my journey—the journey from being a techie, a CEO, and a thought leader to embracing the unpredictable path of writing.

It’s a world apart — yet strangely, it feels like coming home.

The Spark

Photo by Jez Timms on Unsplash

The idea of writing came to me not in a moment of epiphany but as a gradual awakening.

Over the years, leading initiatives on IoT and engaging with smart city technologies, I have always felt the undercurrent of stories waiting to be told.

These were not just narratives of technology but of people, dreams, and the future.

The more I spoke at conferences, discussing the complexities of our digital world, the clearer it became — these experiences deserved a life beyond the fleeting moments of a speech.

“Could I?” I would often muse silently after my sessions. “Could I translate these dialogues into written words that might inspire, inform, and touch a reader’s heart as profoundly as they have touched mine?”

The First Steps

Photo by Jordan Christian on Unsplash

Taking the first steps was like entering a new city.

The paths were unfamiliar, and the language was nuanced.

But the essence, the pulse of writing, was like any technology I had mastered—it needed understanding, patience, and practice.

I began with short pieces, reflections, really, on my day-to-day encounters in the tech world. What started as a trickle — posts on LinkedIn and blogs on my company’s website — soon gained momentum.

The feedback was encouraging and often heartening.

It wasn’t just about sharing knowledge anymore; it was about sharing a part of my soul.

The Challenges

Photo by Jaco Pretorius on Unsplash

Transitioning from corporate presentations and technical dissertations to personal and engaging narratives was no small feat.

I grappled with voice, structure, and style. Each sentence posed a question: Was this Mazlan the CEO talking, or Mazlan the individual?

“Keep it simple, keep it sincere,” I would remind myself, my pen hovering over a notebook filled with crossed-out lines and arrows.

It was a dialogue, not with an audience this time, but with myself.

The Revelation

Photo by Aaron Burden on Unsplash

It was during one such session of self-dialogue that I penned a short poem — a simple set of verses that encapsulated my thoughts on writing:

Write when you feel it,
When ideas surge and swirl.
Don’t put off the moment,
Let your thoughts unfurl.

This poem became my manifesto, my guide.

It reminded me that writing, much like technology, isn’t just about the mechanics and the human connection. It’s about touching lives, sparking ideas, and nurturing thoughts.

Embracing the Journey

Photo by Dmitrii Vaccinium on Unsplash

Now, as I continue on this path, each word I write strengthens my resolve. Writing is no longer just an activity; it’s a journey of exploration and self-discovery.

It’s about painting pictures with words, about seeing the world through a different lens.

“Where will this journey take me?” I often wonder.

The destination remains unknown, and perhaps, that is the beauty of it. In writing, just as in life and technology, the journey itself is the destination.

To those who stand where I once stood, at the edge of a new venture, unsure and tentative — write.

Write from the heart.

Let not the fear of imperfection or judgment deter you.

Your voice is unique, and your stories are necessary.

As I close this chapter of reflections, ready to open another, the lines of the poem echo back, a gentle reminder of why I began:

Write because it matters,
To you more than anyone else.
Let your innermost whispers,
Jump right off the shelf.

Writing, for me, is no longer just about sharing expertise but about baring my soul.

It is daunting, yes, but exhilarating.

And as long as the heart speaks, I will write.

How Medium Shaped My Voice

WRITER’S JOURNEY

I’ve found not just my way but also my heart and my resonance.

Photo by Giu Vicente on Unsplash

The Novice on a Vast Stage

I must confessed, I was a novice, standing timidly at the edge of an immense, unexplored stage. “English isn’t my first language,” I would often mutter to myself, seeing it as a formidable barrier. Despite this, I had an intense yearning to express my burgeoning passion for writing. Initially, my words stumbled and fell flat, unrefined and tentative as the steps of a child learning to walk.

Will anyone even notice?” I often wondered. My early articles were brief and shallow, lacking the depth and flair I admired in the works of others. They felt like echoes in an empty square, hardly noticed, quickly forgotten.

A Lone Voice in the Digital Wind

In those early days, my digital presence was akin to a lone voice caught in the wind—no readers lingered on my page, and no followers eagerly awaited my next post. “Is anyone out there?” The silence was disheartening. The much-coveted signs of engagement, such as comments and claps, were conspicuously absent. I was an invisible entity in Medium’s vast writers’ world, yet to spark any noticeable interest or impact.

But I must keep going,” I told myself. Within me, a resilient spark refused to be extinguished. I was determined not to let my initial failures define my capabilities. Thus began my arduous journey against the currents of doubt and linguistic challenges.

Chipping Away Doubts

I noticed a gradual improvement with each new article and every line I penned. “This is getting better,” I’d think, feeling a small surge of pride. It was as if I was sculpting my statue from a rough block of marble, chipping away the excess until my true potential emerged.

The community of writers on Medium, with their open arms and open minds, played a crucial role in this transformative journey. “Welcome, we’re glad you’re here!” they said. They welcomed me into their fold, generously sharing their knowledge, art, and souls.

From them, I learned not just the mechanics of writing but also its artistry. I knew the importance of crafting captivating headlines, the skill of weaving words that could engage readers, and the ability to purify my voice to resonate clearly through my prose.

Embracing Shakespeare’s Language

I immersed myself in “Shakespeare’s language,” which was both a challenge and a revelation. “To be or not to be,” I would joke during moments of frustration with my grammar, which strengthened over time, as did my vocabulary.

Slowly but surely, my followers began to increase, and claps—the Medium community’s show of appreciation—started to rain upon my work. “They like it!” I realized one day that my writing was no longer a vain pursuit; I was finally making my mark.

From Timidity to Confidence

This newfound confidence and recognition were exhilarating. With each new piece, my spirit roared louder, and my voice grew more assertive. I had moved from being a timid, uncertain writer to one who could claim his space confidently within the community. Medium had become more than just a platform; it was a nurturing ground where I could grow and contribute.

Look how far you’ve come,” I often reflect, amazed at my journey. It is a testament to perseverance and the transformative power of community support and self-belief. My narrative is no longer just about overcoming the language barrier; it’s about embracing it as a powerful tool for expression and connection.

Photo by Kenny Eliason on Unsplash

A Home Among Words

I have found my place in this vibrant crowd of writers and readers. “I belong here,” I say with certainty, in this community that values every voice, including those that start as mere whispers in the wind. Each word I write now paints part of my dream, a vivid splash on the vast canvas of Medium.

I write not just to express but to connect and to resonate with others across this digital expanse. Let this account of my journey be my song of gratitude, a tribute to every stumble that taught me to rise and every fellow writer who helped me find my footing.

Here to Stay

In the heart of Medium, amidst its diverse voices and stories, I have found more than just my footing – I have discovered a home. In this confluence of ideas and inspirations, I continue to write, share, and dream.

Here, on this vast and endless stage, I have learned that my voice, once unsure and faltering, can now sing clearly and firmly. “This is where I was meant to be,” I often think, filled with a sense of belonging and purpose.

And here, I will stay, for in this space, I’ve found not just my way, but also my heart and my resonance.

Where We Began and Where We Are

PERSONAL JOURNEY

How childhood connections shape our individual stories.

Photo by Robert Collins on Unsplash

Reflecting on the paths my childhood friends and I have taken often fills me with nostalgia and introspection. We started in the same place, a village smack in the City Centre of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, where our biggest concerns were usually about who could run faster or which trees were best for climbing.

Now, each of us has ventured into dramatically different directions in life, shaping unique narratives that are incomparable at their core.

Understanding the Journey

Growing up, I was surrounded by a close-knit group of friends. We shared everything: school days, games, secrets, and dreams. As we grew older, our interests began to diverge, our dreams started to take shape, and slowly, the paths we chose started to reflect our innermost aspirations and talents.

Hey, Mazlan, I’m going to be a pilot!” I remember Aziz, always adventurous, proclaiming his dream with sparkling eyes.

Sofia, thoughtful and caring, wanted to go into medicine.

I was fascinated by gadgets and circuits, and I spent hours taking apart radios to see if I could put them back together.

Even then, I’d remind myself, “Mazlan, just focus on what you love. Don’t worry about the rest.

Photo by Artem Kniaz on Unsplash

Choosing My Path

Am I making the right choice?” This question haunted me as I decided to study telecommunications engineering.

Meanwhile, my friends were all dispersing into fields as varied as finance, arts, and sciences. It was the first real taste of how our roads were diverging, a realization that was both exciting and somewhat daunting.

As the years passed, the updates from my friends became less frequent but more profound.

Aziz became a pilot, soaring over continents, while Sofia became Dr. Sofia, who was involved in rural healthcare and dedicated her life to helping underserved communities.

Should I have followed a more straightforward path?” I occasionally wondered, especially during the challenging early days of my career in IoT, where nothing seemed inevitable.

But then, I’d recall my late father’s advice, “Mazlan, everyone has their way. What matters is that it’s your way.

Photo by Jordan Whitt on Unsplash

Embracing the Differences

Over time, I began to see the beauty in our diverse paths. At reunions or through social media, I saw pictures of Aziz in the cockpit, Sofia at clinics in remote areas, and other friends in their elements.

It was like watching pieces of a puzzle put together to complete the picture.

Why would I want to be anything else?” I’d muse, realizing that my journey through the world of IoT was precisely where I needed to be.

My ventures and innovations began to gain traction, and as I became more recognized in my field, the initial doubts faded into quiet confidence.

Learning from Each Path

Every update from a friend became a lesson.

Aziz talked about the places he visited, giving me a glimpse into cultures and innovations worldwide, which sometimes sparked ideas for my own work in smart city solutions.

Sofia’s stories of healthcare challenges inspired me to think about how IoT could be used to improve healthcare infrastructures.

What can I learn from this?” became a common thought as I tried to integrate my friends’ experiences into my worldview and work.

Photo by MI PHAM on Unsplash

Reflecting on Success

Success, I’ve learned, is deeply personal and cannot be measured by a universal scale. Each friend has faced challenges and celebrated victories that, from the outside, might seem more or less significant, but to them, they were all defining moments.

Mazlan, remember, it’s not about the destination; it’s about the journey,” I often remind myself, especially when the inevitable comparisons creep up.

Our different stories aren’t just about professional achievements but about the lives we’ve touched, the passions we’ve pursued, and the small moments that have brought joy.

Sharing the Lessons

Now, as I share these reflections in presentations or casual conversations, I emphasize the importance of embracing one’s unique path.

Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle,” I often say, hoping to inspire others to pursue their passions relentlessly and without fear.

Everyone has their path, and that’s what makes life so fascinating,” I conclude, feeling grateful for the diverse journeys my friends and I have embarked upon.

These differences have enriched our conversations, broadened our perspectives, and strengthened our bonds.

Reflecting on how far we’ve all come, from those carefree childhood days to where we stand now, shows me just how unpredictable and beautifully unique life can be.

It reinforces my belief that while we may start together, our paths are reflections of ourselves—shaped by our dreams, driven by our passions, and refined by the challenges we face.

Each path, with its twists and turns, is a personal journey worth embracing.

How to Stay Motivated and Inspired to Write Each Day

WRITER’S STORIES

Tips on how to remain consistent as a writer.

Photo by Omar Prestwich on Unsplash

As a technology entrepreneur deeply involved in IoT and smart cities, my days are often filled with writing: crafting blog posts, preparing speeches, or detailing the latest in tech advancements.

The process of turning ideas into written words is essential, not just for sharing knowledge but for clarifying my own thoughts.

However, finding the motivation to write daily can be a monumental task.

Here, I’ll share a more personal view of how I faced these challenges.

Discovering My Purpose

“Why am I doing this?” This question surfaces frequently, especially on days filled with myriad responsibilities.

Writing isn’t just part of my job – it’s my primary method for sharing insights and educating others about emerging tech.

Realizing that my writing has the power to demystify complex technologies for many rejuvenates my purpose and fuels my drive.

It’s about making a difference, one article at a time.

Setting Small, Achievable Goals

Photo by Afif Ramdhasuma on Unsplash

“Let’s break this down.” When the prospect of writing something extensive looms over me, I remind myself to take it one step at a time.

Setting small goals – like drafting a few hundred words before lunch – seems more manageable. Each small victory not only propels me forward but builds up to larger accomplishments without the overwhelm.

“Just start with one paragraph, Mazlan,” I often mutter to myself, and before I know it, I’m several pages in.

Minimizing Distractions

Photo by Nick Fewings on Unsplash

“Focus, Mazlan.” In a world where notifications never cease, finding focus is crucial.

I strategize to combat distractions by creating a physical and digital environment conducive to writing.

This means silencing my phone and using apps to block off the digital noise.

Establishing specific times to write also compartmentalizes my day effectively, allowing uninterrupted stretches for writing amidst my other tasks.

Developing Good Writing Habits

Photo by Drew Beamer on Unsplash

“Plan first, edit later.” I’ve learned to streamline my writing process over the years.

Outlining is the first step, helping me organize my thoughts and structure my piece.

I avoid editing as I write to keep the flow going. “Leave the editing for later, focus on getting your thoughts out now,” is a mantra I repeat.

Breaks are also part of my routine – essential pauses that refresh my mind. “Time for a walk,” I’ll say, stepping away to clear my head.

Creating a Publishing Schedule

Photo by Jazmin Quaynor on Unsplash

“What’s on the schedule?” Having a clear publishing plan each week keeps me accountable.

It’s not just about maintaining productivity but also about satisfying the reader’s expectations.

I lay out what needs to be written and when, adjusting as needed but always keeping the rhythm.

“Monday for the blog, Wednesday for the white paper,” I plan, ensuring each project gets its due time.

Continuously Seeking Inspiration

Photo by Martin Shreder on Unsplash

“Need new ideas.” Staying inspired is critical.

I seek fresh perspectives through reading, conversations, or industry events.

Each new piece of information is a potential spark for writing.

“This could be a great topic for my next piece,” I think as I note down ideas that can be expanded into full articles.

Reflecting on Achievements and Setting New Targets

Photo by Salonagility.com Daniel on Unsplash

“Look how far you’ve come, Mazlan.” Reflecting on past writings and the milestones achieved is incredibly motivating.

It reminds me of the journey and the impact of my work. Setting new goals based on past successes pushes me to keep going.

“What’s the next challenge?” I ask myself, aiming always to contribute more meaningfully.

Engaging With My Audience

Photo by Melanie Deziel on Unsplash

“What do they think?” Finally, interacting with my readers brings me direct motivation.

The feedback I receive shapes my future writings and keeps me connected to my audience’s needs.

“This suggestion is great; I should cover this topic next,” I consider, making note of reader inputs.

Writing daily is a complex interplay of discipline, passion, and purpose.

Through manageable goals, structured schedules, and ongoing dialogues with myself, I stay motivated, making every piece a stepping stone to broader impacts in the tech world.

Each day is a new chance to influence through words, and I am here for it, one sentence at a time.

Feel free to leave any feedback and share what works best for you as a writer!

Beauty of the Heart vs Beauty of the Soul

POEM

Let their stories through us unfold.

Photo by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash

In the quiet hall of whispers soft and low,

Where Beauty of the Heart and Soul doth show,

Their essence gleams beneath the mortal coil,

A silent duel, their virtues to unfoil.

Beauty of the Heart, a radiant flame,

Burns bright in acts of kindness, love’s true claim.

It dances in the laughter of a child,

In gestures small, in temperaments mild.

Photo by Fa Barboza on Unsplash

Through storms and trials, it remains unswayed,

A beacon firm, in golden light arrayed.

It speaks in tongues of comfort and of care,

In every loving touch, it’s always there.

Yet, Beauty of the Soul, in depths profound,

In silent strength where mysteries abound.

It’s the keeper of the secrets, the dreams we hold,

A deeper ocean, never fully told.

It sings in harmony with the stars at night,

A melody that feels both dark and light.

Its wisdom flows through time like a river wide,

In its waters deep, true selves reside.

Both beauties, different, yet the same,

Each playing their own intricate game.

One visible in every selfless deed,

The other, a silent force that all hearts heed.

Photo by Ahmad Odeh on Unsplash

One may argue which holds sway or might,

Which beauty wins, which guides us right.

Yet in the dance of life, they twist and twirl,

In every man and woman, boy and girl.

For heart’s beauty shines in the daylight bright,

In actions warm, in love’s sweet might.

But the soul’s beauty, like the moon’s soft glow,

Illuminates the paths where night winds blow.

Photo by Pin Adventure Map on Unsplash

Together, they weave a tapestry divine,

In the fabric of being, seamlessly they entwine.

One outward pours, the other inward seeks,

In every soul, their balance each heart seeks.

To choose between them would be a folly,

For they exist in all, both melancholy and jolly.

Their confluence, a river of light and shadow,

Carving through life, through joy and sorrow.

Photo by Ilya Shishikhin on Unsplash

In every heart that beats, in every soul that dreams,

In every tear that falls, in every smile that gleams,

Beauty lives, in dual form, entwined,

In every one of us, it’s there to find.

So let us cherish both, heart and soul,

Let their stories through us unfold.

For beauty is not a surface to be seen,

But a light within, where it has always been.

Five (5) Best Reasons Why I Chose Gumroad to Sell My eBooks

WRITER’S STORIES

How I earned extra money online.

Check out Mazlan Abbas Gumroad Store

Although I can earn money from writing stories on Medium, I am able to earn extra by converting my articles into eBooks and selling them on Gumroad.

This is my Gumroad store — HERE.

Selling eBooks can be a fulfilling and profitable venture, especially when you find the right platform that aligns with your goals and needs as an author.

After experimenting with various options, I chose Gumroad as my platform of choice for distributing my eBooks. Here, I’ll share my personal journey and the five main reasons why Gumroad became my go-to for eBook sales.

Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash

Introduction to Gumroad

Before diving into the specifics, it’s essential to understand what Gumroad is.

Gumroad is a straightforward, user-friendly e-commerce platform designed for creators of all types — from filmmakers and musicians to writers like myself.

It simplifies the process of selling directly to consumers, bypassing many of the hurdles that traditional or more complex platforms present.

Reason 1: Ease of Use

The primary reason I gravitated towards Gumroad is its incredible ease of use. When I first decided to sell my eBooks, I was looking for a platform that wouldn’t require a steep learning curve.

I wanted to focus on writing and content creation, not on navigating complicated software.

Setting up my Gumroad account was a breeze. Within a few clicks, I was able to upload my first eBook, set a price, and prepare it for sale. The interface is intuitive, clean, and direct. There’s no clutter or unnecessary features to wade through, which made it incredibly easy for someone like me, who prioritizes simplicity in digital tools.

Reason 2: Customer Connection

Another significant factor in my decision was the ability to connect directly with my customers. Gumroad offers tools that allow creators to engage with their audience in a more personal way.

Through Gumroad, I can send updates, discounts, and newsletters directly to the people who have purchased my eBooks.

This direct line of communication is invaluable. It helps me build a community around my work and receive immediate feedback from my readers. Such interactions are crucial for improving my eBooks and tailoring future content to meet the needs and interests of my audience.

Reason 3: Flexibility in Pricing

Gumroad provides remarkable flexibility in how I price my products, which is not as prevalent on other platforms. I can set standard prices, or I can use a “pay what you want” model, which has been incredibly effective for reaching a broader audience.

This model allows buyers to pay more than the base price if they feel the content is worth more, which some of my readers appreciate and take advantage of.

Moreover, running promotions and discounts is straightforward on Gumroad. These strategies are essential for driving sales during specific periods, such as holidays or the launch of a new eBook.

Gumroad’s flexible pricing capabilities enable me to experiment with different strategies to see what works best for my market and genre.

Reason 4: Analytics and Insights

Understanding who buys your eBooks and how they find them is key to growing your sales. Gumroad offers a comprehensive set of analytics tools that help me track sales, visitor traffic, and conversion rates. These insights are critical for refining my marketing strategies.

With Gumroad’s analytics, I can see which of my marketing efforts are working and which aren’t, allowing me to invest more wisely in ads and promotional activities.

This data-driven approach helps me maximize my return on investment and continuously grow my reader base.

Reason 5: Minimal Fees and Transparent Policies

Finally, the fee structure and transparency of Gumroad are crucial reasons why I stick with the platform. Gumroad charges a reasonable fee for each sale, and there are no hidden costs or unexpected charges.

This transparency allows me to plan my finances and understand exactly how much I will earn from each sale.

In comparison to other platforms that might charge monthly fees or have complex fee structures that vary by product type or sales volume, Gumroad’s straightforward approach is refreshingly simple and economical.

Conclusion

Choosing where to sell your eBooks is as significant as writing them. For me, Gumroad has proven to be the best platform due to its ease of use, direct customer connection, flexible pricing options, valuable analytics, and clear fee structure.

It has not only facilitated the sales of my eBooks but also helped me grow as a writer and marketer.

Whether you’re just starting or looking to switch platforms, consider what aspects of eBook selling are most important to you and see how Gumroad might meet those needs.

In my experience, it has been an indispensable tool for connecting with readers and building a sustainable writing career.

Your Vision and Purpose Were Larger Than Any Obstacle

INFLUENCER’S JOURNEY

Several years ago, I made a pivotal decision to transform my mindset and actions.

I stopped:

  • complaining
  • hoping
  • wishing

Instead, I began to:

  • innovate
  • construct
  • realize

I committed to being consistent, persistent, and patient.

No matter how tough the journey got, how many heartaches I endured, or how daunting the challenges appeared.

Even in moments when it seemed there was no end in sight, when the storms outnumbered the sunny days, and the setbacks outnumbered the victories, I persevered.

My vision and purpose were larger than any obstacle.

Remember, no one understands your vision better than you.

No one else can construct it as effectively as you can.

Only you can turn it into reality.

Stay resilient on your entrepreneurial path.

The journey is not meant to be easy; if it were, everyone would succeed at it.

You are on the right path, and in time, you will reach your destination.
