Here’s to Favoriot’s expansion into new markets, wisely navigating global challenges, and making a mark worldwide with its innovative solutions.
Happy 7th Anniversary FAVORIOT!

I keep tossing this one question back and forth in my head: “Is FAVORIOT gonna keep the lights on for another year?”
It’s like, running a startup feels like being in a marathon with no clear finish line – just hills, mountains, and valleys for days.
Jumping into entrepreneurship, I honestly didn’t see the rollercoaster ride coming.
From the outside, you always hear about these startups going from zero to hero, hitting that IPO jackpot in just a few years. It’s all about the glory days, right?
You often catch stories about startup founders bagging millions in funding, scaling from a duo to hundreds, even thousands of employees, and then making it big internationally.
Those are the success tales.
But for every one of those, there’s a bunch that just… vanish.
They’re part of the grim 90% of startups that crash and burn each year.
Those stories? Not so loud.
FAVORIOT kicked off officially on February 20, 2017, but didn’t really get rolling until April 1, 2017, with just a few of us.
Since then, a lot of the original crew has moved on, replaced by fresh faces.
The past seven years have been a wild ride, to say the least.
Here’s the scoop:
1 — Starting with Zero Revenue – We went a whole year without making a dime, with our costs through the roof.
All because we were deep in the R&D phase, working on our “Raqib” product (an IoT thing for monitoring the elderly and Hajj pilgrims).
Then, just as we were ready to roll in 2019, COVID hit, and Malaysia’s Hajj got postponed for two years (2020–2021).
Just like that, all the money we’d poured into Raqib felt like it went down the drain.
2 — When No One’s Buying – In the early days, folks would come up to me all excited about IoT, wanting to collaborate but not really sure how.
But then, crickets.
No one actually wanted to buy. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to thinking, “Are they just here to pick my brain or what?”
3 — Turning Down IoT Training Initially – At first, we thought people could just learn IoT on their own with all the tutorials out there.
Boy, were we wrong.
We only started offering commercial IoT courses by the end of 2021, almost four years too late!
4 — From 20 to 8300 Users – It began with just a handful of folks interested in our IoT platform.
Now? We’ve got users from 121 countries.
Talk about growth!
5 — Branding Favoriot – Once upon a time, googling “Favoriot” would get you “Favorito.”
Now, we’re the first thing that pops up.
We’ve made a name for ourselves in Malaysia as an IoT startup.
By some miracle, we’ve managed to claw our way out of the dreaded “Valley of Death,” despite its gravity trying to pull us back in.
Moving Forward
Maybe it’s time to hit up investors again, look for new partners, or VCs.
Back in the day, we didn’t stand a chance without traction or customers.
Rejection was the name of the game, whether pitching to investors or trying to get into accelerators.
But now?
It feels like it’s time to open up Favoriot’s doors again, see if we can snag some VC funding or find a company interested in making IoT part of their business.
Happy 7th Anniversary, FAVORIOT.
Here’s hoping this year, and the years to come, are even better than the last.
“May every team member of Favoriot grow wiser with the company, enjoying personal and professional development that leads to collective success.”
A shoutout to our earliest customers, too. Without their trust, it would’ve been a much tougher sell for the rest.
And finally, to my friends who’ve always had my back, thank you. Your support means the world.
I am new to Medium Partner. Thus, I need to learn how Publication works.
I tried sending it to some Publications but did not get any response.
Either the Editor is busy, or my article needs to meet the acceptance requirements (which I don’t).
However, I noticed that Publications can help me in two things:
1 — Managing my niche contents
2 — Allow my Followers to focus on a specific niche
I have created 4 Publications. Below are their statistics:
(1) IoT World
I created this publication because, for many years, I have had a blog called IoT World.
However, I need help engaging and giving notifications to my readers and followers except for publishing them on my Social Media channels whenever I have a new post.
By having this Publication, I will encourage them to start reading here, and I will finally stop investing my time in IoT World Blog.
The average number of daily visitors to IoT World is 4.
(2) Startup Survival Journey
I have been writing my entrepreneurship journey in my Mazlan Abbas blog. Instead of managing similar articles in Medium, I will focus my energy on Medium. Thus, I migrated my custom domain to Medium early this year.
This is a niche topic which is my hobby and my passion. Since I have been in social media and speaking engagement for many years, I wanted to share my journey and experience as a Social Media Influencer and a Thought Leader.
Of course, with all the experience writing blogs and articles online, I would like to share the challenges and tips of my journey to making money online.
By journaling the journey, I can learn what works and what doesn’t.
It will also serve as my diary as I put my effort in Medium.
I noticed that the IoT World publication has the lowest number of reads, views, and visitors, even though I have put much effort into creating content for it.
IoT World doesn’t have a Paywall compared to the rest of the Publications. I will typically publish and send a link to my email subscribers.
However, as mentioned in my article here, the number of views or reach is very high.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d become an author of multiple eBooks, let alone publish three in just a month. My latest journey in writing has been nothing short of a whirlwind, and I’m here to tell you how I managed it — and how you can follow suit.
Let me pull back the curtain on my writing process. It’s surprisingly straightforward and something you can replicate. My strategy was simple: I curated the best articles from my blog and transformed them into eBooks. No magic, just a bit of hard work and smart repurposing of content I already had.
The first eBook I launched was “My Startup Survival,” a personal narrative about my foray into entrepreneurship. The cover was a simple Canva creation, but it conveyed the essence of my startup journey. This book was a labor of love, a reflection on the trials and triumphs of building something from the ground up.
The second was “IoT: A Beginner’s Guide,” initially titled “IoT Frontier.” It took me two years to overcome my procrastination and finally get it out there. This eBook was a deep dive into the Internet of Things, written to demystify the field for newcomers.
This book isn’t just a guide; it’s an expedition into the world of IoT platforms. It starts with the basics, explaining why on-premise IoT platforms are critical for deployments. Then, it compares various IoT platforms to help decision-makers choose the right one for their needs.
The heart of the book is the in-depth exploration of the Favoriot IoT Platform. I break down its plans, capabilities, and how businesses and developers can leverage it for their IoT projects. But I don’t stop there. The book also offers practical guidance on crafting IoT solutions, reducing development time, and tailoring platforms to specific verticals.
I delve into the role of IoT in education, arguing for its integration into university curriculums to prepare future developers. Case studies sprinkle the book, bringing the theories to life with real-world applications.
By the end, I hope to leave readers with a clear understanding of IoT’s transformative power across various sectors, championed by platforms like Favoriot.
So, if you’re a business leader, an IoT developer, or an educator, “Mastering IoT with Favoriot” is penned for you. It’s a blend of theoretical insights and actionable advice, all aimed at harnessing the potential of IoT.
And there you have it, the story of how I published three eBooks in a month. If I’ve sparked a curiosity in you about IoT or writing, I invite you to read my guide. It’s more than just a book; it’s a blueprint for innovation in the IoT landscape.
Journeying Through the Telecom Labyrinth: Lessons from a Diverse Management Career
Embarking on my career at one of Malaysia’s leading telecommunications companies, I found myself in a whirlwind of varied management roles.
My early days were a deep dive into the multifaceted world of telecom, from research and development to network operations and business management.
This rotational approach wasn’t just about career advancement; it was a journey into the heart of the industry’s complexities and interconnections.
Each role presented its unique challenges, shaping my approach to leadership and excellence.
I learned the art of agility, adapting swiftly to changes and innovating in the face of complex problems.
Tech Evolution: Riding the Wave of Change
The technological aspect of my tenure was nothing short of exhilarating. Immersed in an industry characterized by rapid evolution, I developed a passion for the ever-changing tech landscape.
This inclination towards dynamic and innovative environments significantly influenced my career trajectory, pushing me towards creative and strategic roles over routine operational tasks.
The Art of Team Management: Understanding Diversity and Adaptability
One of the most challenging yet fulfilling aspects of my journey was managing diverse teams.
The variation in team sizes and the unique mix of backgrounds and attitudes brought forth distinctive challenges.
It was imperative to develop adaptable management strategies.
These experiences sharpened my skills in conflict resolution, team cohesion, and empathetic leadership, underscoring the importance of empathy and understanding in managing diverse teams.
Balancing Tech and Market Needs in Product Development
My role in product development was particularly enlightening.
It required me to balance technical feasibility with market demands, emphasizing the need to align technical solutions with business objectives.
This period highlighted the necessity of ensuring our products not only met technological standards but also catered to and satisfied customer needs.
The High Stakes of Business Management
Taking the reins of a division with nearly RM 50 million in annual revenue was a daunting yet rewarding challenge.
It demanded acute business insight, strategic foresight, and robust risk management. Juggling ambitious growth targets with the imperative of operational sustainability was a constant balancing act.
Crisis Management: Overcoming Billing System Transition Challenges
A particularly challenging phase was overseeing the transition to a new billing system.
This phase, laden with technical challenges and customer dissatisfaction, was a rigorous test of my crisis management abilities.
The high-tension environment and the fear of a key staff resignation potentially crippling the company taught me valuable lessons in resilience and strategic problem-solving.
The Lasting Value of Professional Relationships
Beyond the professional milestones, the enduring friendships formed during my tenure at the telco are among my most treasured experiences.
These relationships, spanning over two decades, extend beyond professional boundaries and remain a cherished part of my life.

The Author was standing in front of the lecture theatre.
Imagine spending days meticulously crafting a presentation, only to face a presenter’s worst nightmare: corrupted slides.
This was the scenario I encountered before a recent lecture at a local University (UNITEN).
The Discovery
The chaos unfolded just as I was setting up for the big day.
It was the third day of 2024!
My laptop was hooked up, the projector was ready, and I was about to dazzle the audience with my well-prepared slides.
But fate had other plans.
To my horror, I discovered several of my slides were blank, devoid of the crucial information I had painstakingly compiled.
The timing couldn’t have been worse!
The Warning Ignored
Reflecting on this mishap, I recalled a critical moment from the previous day.
As I was packing up, my computer, running PowerPoint, flashed a warning about a problem with the file’s save process.
In my haste, I dismissed this. The issue stemmed from my decision to rename the slides folder.
Unaware of the impending disaster, I saved the file under a different name and thought nothing more of it.
My fault!
This is the lesson for being too complacent and overconfident!
I have previously made hundreds of presentations, and everything ran smoothly… until that day!
The Improvised Solution
There I was, in front of an eager audience, grappling with the reality of my situation.
Time was ticking, and I needed a quick fix. Scrambling through my digital archives, I found old slides from past presentations.
It wasn’t ideal, but it was a start.
The process was cumbersome, having to merge and present two separate files.
The seamless flow I had envisioned was now a patchwork of old and new, with some of the freshly prepared slides tragically lost to corruption.
The Silver Lining
Despite these unexpected events, the lecture was a partial disaster.
I navigated through the improvised presentation, covering as much material as possible.
Admittedly, key points needed to be addressed due to the missing slides.
However, the experience became an impromptu lesson in adaptability and problem-solving – valuable skills in any professional setting.
Reflections and Lessons Learned
As I reflect on this incident, backing up work and heeding software warnings stands out starkly.
In the world of digital presentations, such mishaps are not uncommon.
The key takeaway for me, and one I hope to impart to others, is the significance of being prepared for the unexpected. Always have a backup plan, and maybe a backup for the backup!
The Author managed to recover back the old slides and continue with the presentation.
This experience, though fraught with challenges, was a memorable start to my lecturing endeavors in 2024.
It served as a reminder that the best lessons are sometimes learned outside the confines of meticulously prepared slides.
I must not be complacent and overconfident.

After preparing presentation slides for several days to give a lecture to Uniten students yesterday, I found that the slides had become corrupted.
Many slides were missing information! This happened just as I had connected my computer and projected it onto the screen.
I remembered that when I was about to shut down my computer before heading to Uniten yesterday afternoon, the PowerPoint software warned me that there was an issue with saving the file.
Perhaps it was because I changed the folder name while making the slides. But I continued to save it with a different name without suspecting anything.
Back to my story in front of the students, I had to quickly search for old slides I had previously used.
I combined two presentation files. Therefore, I had to open and present them separately.
However, some of the new slides could not be shown because they were corrupted.
Thankfully, the presentation yesterday still went well, although I lost a few points that I couldn’t convey.
That’s a brief story of my first presentation or lecture experience in the new year 2024.
