Why Do I View Writing on Medium as Similar to Being a Football Player?

Writer = Footballer

In fact, there are many similarities between both of them.

Photo by Alliance Football Club on Unsplash

“Just as every football player knows that the strength of the team is each individual member, and the strength of each member is the team, every writer on Medium understands that our words gain strength from the community we build and engage with.”

Writing and football might seem worlds apart – one a solitary and reflective activity, the other a dynamic and physical team sport.

However, reflecting on my experiences as a writer on Medium, I inevitably find myself drawing comparisons to the life of a football player.

Let me share my perspective on how crafting articles on this popular platform mirrors the discipline, creativity, and teamwork found in football.

The Training Ground: Honing Skills and Strategy

“Both in football and in writing for Medium, every day is game day, and every publication is a play that demands our best – honing our skills, strategizing our moves, and playing our hearts out in the field of creative expression.”

Every football player knows that success on the field begins with rigorous training off it.

Similarly, as a writer on Medium, I see each piece I write as part of my training.

Just as a footballer drills techniques and strategies, I refine my writing skills – vocabulary, syntax, structure – with every article I publish.

In both arenas, staying informed about the latest trends and strategies is crucial.

A footballer watches matches and learns new tactics; I keep abreast of popular topics and writing styles on Medium.

This ongoing learning process is vital for growth and adaptation, ensuring that we stay relevant and competitive.

The Game Day: Publishing and Performance

Publishing an article on Medium feels akin to a football player stepping onto the pitch on match day.

There’s a mix of excitement and nervousness, knowing that your hard work and practice are about to be put to the test in front of an audience.

In football, players must read the game and adapt to evolving situations.

Similarly, once my article is live on Medium, I monitor its performance – views, reads, and engagement – and respond accordingly.

I might tweak the title, adjust the tags, or promote it on social media, much like how a footballer adjusts their play based on the opponent’s tactics or the game’s flow.

The Team Effort: Community and Collaboration

While writing is often seen as a solitary endeavor, my experience on Medium has been deeply communal, reminiscent of being part of a football team.

On a team, players support one another, celebrate successes, and learn from defeats together.

On Medium, fellow writers and readers form a supportive community where feedback, encouragement, and shared learning flourish.

Collaborations on Medium – be it through responses, highlighting, or joint publications – mirror the cooperative spirit of football, where combining individual strengths leads to greater success.

Just as footballers form alliances on the field, writers on Medium build networks, enhancing each other’s visibility and success.

Overcoming Challenges: Resilience and Adaptation

Both in football and on Medium, setbacks and challenges are inevitable.

A football player might face injuries or poor form, just as a Medium writer encounters writer’s block or fluctuating engagement.

In both cases, resilience is key.

Learning from failures, refining strategies, and persisting despite obstacles are as essential for a Medium writer as for a football player.

Embracing criticism, adapting to change, and maintaining a growth mindset are crucial for long-term success and improvement in both fields.

The Joy of Scoring: Recognition and Reward

“The thrill of scoring on the football field and resonating with readers on Medium share the same core: the joy of making an impact, the exhilaration of shared success, and the sweet reward of recognition for one’s passion and hard work.”

The thrill of scoring a goal in football is unparalleled, offering a sense of achievement and recognition.

Similarly, when an article resonates with readers on Medium, the positive feedback, comments, and applause provide a comparable rush of satisfaction and validation.

Moreover, just as footballers aspire to win championships and earn accolades, successful Medium writers gain recognition through increased readership, Top Writer status, or even monetization opportunities.

These achievements motivate continued effort, creativity, and engagement with the platform.

Final Whistle: Continuous Learning and Passion

“The discipline of a football player and the creativity of a Medium writer merge on the common ground of relentless pursuit – chasing the ball or chasing the word, each stride is fueled by an undying passion to express, engage, and excel

Ultimately, whether playing football or writing on Medium, the journey is one of continuous learning, passion, and growth.

The dedication to improve, the joy found in the process, and the commitment to sharing one’s talents with others are common threads that bind these seemingly disparate activities.

My experience as a writer on Medium resonates deeply with the attributes of a football player.

The discipline, community, adaptability, and pursuit of excellence in both fields underscore the unexpected yet profound parallels between them.

Through this lens, I approach my writing with the same enthusiasm, strategy, and team spirit that I admire in football, striving to make each article a testament to the shared virtues of both passions.

Writing Should Bring Joy – Not Just Cents and Dollars

Writer’s dilemma

Oh, where do I even start?

Are you getting burnt out?

The last couple of months have been a rollercoaster for me, at least when it comes to my Medium earnings.

December 2023 and January 2024 were phenomenal – I mean, I was on cloud nine, seeing those numbers go up. “This is it,” I thought, “I’m finally making a breakthrough!

But then, February rolled around, and let’s just say, the excitement started to wear off.

The results were… underwhelming, to say the least.

Some days, I’d log in, eager to see my progress, only to find a few cents added to my account.

What’s going on?” I’d mutter to myself, staring blankly at the screen.

It was like someone had popped my happy bubble with a sharp needle.

I’ve been publishing like a machine – daily, sometimes even twice a day. So, what went wrong?

As I sat there, staring at my laptop, I started to ponder over my recent Medium activities.

A lightbulb went off – “Ah-ha!” It dawned on me that I’d been less engaged with other writers.

My interaction levels had plummeted.

Sure, the claps were still coming in, but when was the last time I left a meaningful comment on someone else’s work? “Hmm, can’t remember,” I whispered to myself.

The truth is, I’ve been so caught up in churning out content that I forgot the essence of being part of a community.

Reading others’ posts and engaging with them wasn’t just a chore; it was what made the platform special.

Perhaps my articles weren’t hitting the mark anymore.

I’ve been writing a lot about Medium tips and stories, but let’s face it – those topics are becoming as stale as last week’s bread.

“Do people even find these interesting anymore?” I questioned, tapping my pen against the notebook.

It’s not just the content, though.

Could it be writer’s block, or am I just tired?

The thought of taking a break crossed my mind. “Maybe I need to step back, recharge, and find inspiration elsewhere,

I mused, staring out the window.

The idea of reading for fun, without the pressure of monetizing every word, suddenly seemed appealing.

So, what do you think?

Should I give myself the permission to take a step back and just enjoy being a reader for a while?

Maybe that’s the reset button I need to hit. After all, writing should bring joy, not just cents and dollars.

How Medium Publications Managed My Niche Contents

Image created using Canva by Author

I am new to Medium Partner. Thus, I need to learn how Publication works.

I tried sending it to some Publications but did not get any response.

Either the Editor is busy, or my article needs to meet the acceptance requirements (which I don’t).

However, I noticed that Publications can help me in two things:

1 — Managing my niche contents

2 — Allow my Followers to focus on a specific niche

I have created 4 Publications. Below are their statistics:

(1) IoT World

I created this publication because, for many years, I have had a blog called IoT World.

However, I need help engaging and giving notifications to my readers and followers except for publishing them on my Social Media channels whenever I have a new post.

By having this Publication, I will encourage them to start reading here, and I will finally stop investing my time in IoT World Blog.

View at Medium.com

IoT World Publication

The average number of daily visitors to IoT World is 4.

(2) Startup Survival Journey

I have been writing my entrepreneurship journey in my Mazlan Abbas blog. Instead of managing similar articles in Medium, I will focus my energy on Medium. Thus, I migrated my custom domain to Medium early this year.

View at Medium.com

The average number of daily visitors to Startup Survival is 7.

(3) Influencer’s Journey

This is a niche topic which is my hobby and my passion. Since I have been in social media and speaking engagement for many years, I wanted to share my journey and experience as a Social Media Influencer and a Thought Leader.

View at Medium.com

The average number of daily visitors to Influencer’s Journey is 7.

(4) Aspiring Writer’s Journey

Of course, with all the experience writing blogs and articles online, I would like to share the challenges and tips of my journey to making money online.

By journaling the journey, I can learn what works and what doesn’t.

It will also serve as my diary as I put my effort in Medium.

View at Medium.com

Aspiring Writer’s Journey

The average number of daily visitors to Aspiring Writer’s Journey is 20.

What’s the Results So Far?

I noticed that the IoT World publication has the lowest number of reads, views, and visitors, even though I have put much effort into creating content for it.

IoT World doesn’t have a Paywall compared to the rest of the Publications. I will typically publish and send a link to my email subscribers.

However, as mentioned in my article here, the number of views or reach is very high.

View at Medium.com

I suspected that my readers on the mailing list would just read from the email rather than visit Medium to read the whole article.

This is suitable for me.

Furthermore, IoT World Publication is now leveraging Medium-high Domain Authority; these articles will get ranked on Google sooner or later.

Note: This is my 300th article!

I have never imagined I could write this many articles, especially last year and this year.

If you want to know about my entrepreneurial journey, check out my latest eBook, “Startup Survival”.

How I Managed to Publish My Third eBook Within 1 Month

I have never imagined in my life that I would be able to publish as many eBooks within a short timeframe.

For the past month, I have published three eBooks (including the third one today).

So, what’s the secret?

There’s no big secret at all. In fact — it’s an open secret.

I used the same formula as others. Using the published articles in our blogs, select the best ones and turn them into an eBook.

Even though I have published several before this, these three eBooks were published in a concise time frame (one month), it’s faster since I have work out the format and to make it into a good-looking eBook.

The first of the three books is “My Startup Survival,” which details my entrepreneurial journey.

View at Medium.com

The second is “IoT: A Beginner’s Guide,” initially called “IoT Frontier”.

How To Use V.I.R.U.S Writing Strategy to Stay Relevant During Holiday Season

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

The holiday season is here.

Everyone is taking their leave at the end of the year.

Krik! Krik! The sound of your published articles.

No one is reading them.

Should you stop publishing?

Can we stay relevant and still have viral content?

Creating content that resonates with a broad audience and goes viral is a coveted goal for many writers and content creators.

The V.I.R.U.S. strategy provides a comprehensive framework to increase the chances of your article spreading rapidly across the internet.

Let’s explore each element of this strategy in detail to understand how it can make your content infectious.

V – Valuable Content

Viral content’s first and most crucial element is its value to the reader. Value can be in various forms – educational, informational, entertaining, or even emotionally resonant.

An article that teaches something new provides insightful analysis, or solves a common problem holds intrinsic value for readers.

To create valuable content, focus on current, trending, or perennially relevant topics.

Conduct thorough research to ensure accuracy and depth.

Articles that are well-researched and provide comprehensive coverage of a topic are more likely to be regarded as valuable resources and shared widely.

I – Interesting and Engaging

Captivating your audience’s attention from the get-go is vital.

The internet is saturated with content; to stand out, yours must be interesting and engaging.

An engaging article draws the reader in and keeps them hooked until the end.

Start with a compelling headline. Your headline is the first, and sometimes only, impression you make on a potential reader.

It should be intriguing, transparent, and reflective of the content.

Use a narrative style that is accessible and engaging, and structure your content with subheadings, bullet points, and short paragraphs to make it easy to read. Including relevant images, infographics, or videos can also enhance engagement.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

R – Relatable to Your Audience

Understanding and connecting with your audience is critical to creating relatable content.

Relatable content strikes a chord with its readers, making them more likely to share it with others.

To achieve this, you need to know your audience well.

What are their interests, challenges, or pain points?

Tailor your content to address these aspects.

Use a tone and language that resonate with your audience.

When appropriate, personal stories, anecdotes, or humor can make your content more relatable and human.

U – Unique Perspective

Numerous articles on almost every topic offer a unique perspective that can make your content stand out.

This uniqueness could be in presenting new information, a novel analysis, or a distinctive style.

Think about what unique insights or experiences you can bring to your topic.

Can you challenge conventional wisdom or offer a contrarian viewpoint?

You may have personal experiences or case studies that can provide a fresh perspective.

Unique content distinguishes you from the competition and can pique readers’ curiosity, increasing the likelihood of shares.

S – Shareable Across Platforms

Finally, for content to go viral, it needs to be easily shareable across different platforms.

This means optimizing your content for social media, forums, emails, and other sharing mediums.

Craft your content with shareability in mind.

This includes using catchy, concise titles that work well as social media posts or email subject lines.

Incorporate visually appealing elements like high-quality images or infographics that will likely be shared.

Make sure your content is mobile-friendly, as a significant portion of social media content is consumed on mobile devices.

Adding social sharing buttons to your content can also facilitate easy sharing.

Embrace V.I.R.U.S Strategy Now

The V.I.R.U.S. strategy provides a robust framework for creating content that has the potential to go viral.

By focusing on creating Valuable, Interesting, Engaging, Relatable, Unique, and Shareable content, you significantly increase the chances of your article resonating with a broad audience.

Viral content is not just about the number of shares or views; it’s about creating something meaningful that resonates with people and encourages them to share it with others.

It’s about striking a chord with your audience, offering them something that is not just worth reading but worth sharing.

By applying the V.I.R.U.S strategy, you can create content that reaches a broad audience and leaves a lasting impact.

How the W.I.N.N.E.R Approach Can Transform an Ordinary Writer Into a Literary Champion

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

This is what I need to do to improve myself in 2024.

I need to find a great strategy that I can hold on.

Success is not just a product of innate talent; it’s also about strategy, discipline, and a willingness to grow.

The acronym W.I.N.N.E.R provides an excellent framework for writers aspiring to refine their craft and elevate their work.

Let’s delve into each element of this approach to understand how it can transform an ordinary writer into a literary champion.

View at Medium.com

W – Write Regularly

The cornerstone of improving as a writer is writing regularly.

Consistency in writing practice enhances your technical abilities and keeps your creative juices flowing.

It’s akin to a musician practicing scales or an athlete following a training routine.

Each word you write polishes your skill and helps you find your unique voice.

Setting a daily writing goal measured in time spent (like an hour a day) or word count (500 words per day).

Over time, this consistent practice turns writing from a task into a natural and essential part of your day, akin to a habitual ritual.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

I – Investigate and Research

Good writing is often underpinned by solid research.

Whether you’re penning a fantasy novel, a historical fiction piece, or an article on a current event, understanding your subject sincerely adds credibility and depth to your writing.

Research fuels not just the content but also inspires new ideas and perspectives.

Investigating various sources, from books and journals to interviews and firsthand experiences, ensures that your writing resonates with authenticity and authority.

It’s not just about getting facts right but also about understanding the nuances of your topic, which, in turn, enriches your narrative.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

N – Nurture Ideas

Ideas are the lifeblood of writing.

To nurture them, you should habitually jot down thoughts and observations as they come, no matter how trivial they seem. Keeping a journal or a digital note-taking app handy is a great way to capture these fleeting moments of inspiration.

Brainstorming sessions, where you let your mind roam free without the constraints of logic or practicality, can lead to the germination of remarkable concepts.

Exposing yourself to diverse experiences and perspectives can infuse your ideas with originality and depth.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

N – Notice Details

The devil, as they say, is in the details.

Paying attention to the minutiae in your writing can significantly enhance its quality.

This includes meticulous attention to grammar and punctuation, which are the foundational elements of clear communication.

It also extends to the crafting of characters, settings, and dialogue.

Details transform a generic scene into a vivid, immersive experience for the reader.

They make characters leap off the page as living, breathing entities.

The more specific and intentional you are with your details, the more your writing will resonate with authenticity.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

E – Edit and Revise

One of the most crucial yet often overlooked aspects of writing is the willingness to revise and edit.

The first draft is just the beginning.

Through the painstaking process of editing, good writing is honed into greatness.

Editing involves correcting grammatical errors and reassessing your work’s flow, structure, and clarity.

It’s about being brutally honest with yourself and being willing to cut or rewrite parts that don’t work.

This process, though sometimes painful, ultimately elevates the quality of your writing.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

R – Read Widely

Finally, you must be an avid reader to be a great writer.

Reading widely exposes you to various styles, genres, and voices.

It’s not just about reading in your genre but exploring a broad spectrum of literature.

This exposure informs your understanding of good writing, enriches your vocabulary, and ignites your imagination.

Reading is also a form of passive learning where you absorb narrative structure, character development, and pacing nuances.

Seeing how other authors tackle these elements can be incredibly instructive and inspiring.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

Embrace W.I.N.N.E.R

Embracing the W.I.N.N.E.R approach is a commitment to continual growth and excellence in writing.

It’s a holistic strategy that addresses the many facets of writing, from the mechanical to the creative.

By writing regularly, researching thoroughly, nurturing ideas, noticing details, editing ruthlessly, and reading widely, you equip yourself with the tools and habits necessary for success in the literary world.

Remember, every great writer was once a beginner who chose to keep writing.

Your journey to becoming a W.I.N.N.E.R in writing starts with embracing these principles and applying them consistently in your quest for literary excellence.

How I Earned More Money on G2.com Compared to Medium

Writing online has become an increasingly popular avenue for individuals seeking to express their thoughts, share their knowledge, and earn extra income.

Medium has positioned itself as a viable platform for writers of all kinds, offering an easy-to-use interface and a potentially broad audience.

However, as with any platform, earning substantial income can be challenging, and writers often seek more lucrative opportunities.

The Medium Experience

Recently, I decided to give Medium a try, hoping to monetize my passion for writing.

After 30 days of consistent effort, I earned a modest $6.

While the process was satisfying and provided a creative outlet, the financial return was minimal.

This experience led me to consider other writing-related income streams.

A Lucrative Alternative: G2.com Reviews

Concurrently, I stumbled upon G2.com, a platform that rewards users for writing software reviews.

In contrast to Medium, G2.com offered $10 Amazon gift cards per review, resulting in a potentially higher income.

Over a month, by reviewing eight different software products, I earned $80 in Amazon gift cards.

This rate of return was significantly higher than my earnings on Medium.

Imagine if you could review one software per day.

How much would you earn? $10 x 365 = $ 3,650 per year?

Pros and Cons

While the financial benefits of writing software reviews on G2.com are apparent, this approach has limitations.

The number of software applications one can genuinely review is finite, and sustaining this pace for an extended period is unrealistic for most individuals.

In contrast, writing on Medium offers a sustainable, long-term option for those looking to develop their writing skills and establish an online presence.

Finding the Right Balance

Given the limitations of both platforms, finding a balance that suits your lifestyle and goals is crucial.

Medium allows for creative expression and the potential for passive income over time as your articles continue to attract readers.

On the other hand, writing software reviews on G2.com provides immediate financial rewards, albeit with a finite limit.

Tips for Maximizing Earnings

If you’re looking to maximize your writing income, consider the following tips:

  1. Diversify Your Income Streams: Don’t rely solely on Medium or software reviews. Explore other writing platforms, freelance opportunities, and content creation gigs.
  2. Build Your Brand: A strong online presence can attract more readers to your Medium articles, potentially increasing your earnings.
  3. Focus on Quality: High-quality, engaging content is more likely to attract readers and generate income.
  4. Network: Connect with other writers and industry professionals to open up new opportunities and collaborations.
  5. Set Realistic Goals: Understand that building a substantial income through writing takes time and persistence.

Conclusion

Writing online offers a plethora of opportunities for creative expression and financial gain.

While Medium provides a sustainable platform for long-term growth, platforms like G2.com offer immediate financial rewards for software reviews.

By diversifying your income streams and focusing on quality, you can maximize your writing income and find a balance that suits your needs.

Remember, the key to success is persistence, networking, and a commitment to honing your craft.

Happy writing!
