About Me (Part-9) — Mazlan Abbas

ABOUT ME SERIES

Why I Changed the Style of My Writing

The author’s photo was converted to Anime using the “Glam” mobile app.

A familiar doubt crept into my mind as I sat at my desk, staring at the windows beside my room. “Mazlan, who are you kidding? Do you think anyone cares about what you have to say?” I shook my head, trying to dismiss the negative voice, but it lingered, casting a shadow over my thoughts.

This wasn’t the first time I had faced this inner critic, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last.

I’ve always believed in the power of storytelling.

From my early days of reading science fiction novels and DC comics to my recent blogging and public speaking endeavors, I’ve seen how stories can inspire, educate, and transform.

Yet, despite my passion for writing, I often grappled with self-doubt.

I remember vividly the day this all began to change.

It was a rainy afternoon, and I was scrolling through Medium, searching for inspiration.

My eyes landed on an article titled “Once I Stopped Believing This Lie, My Writing Improved 100x.

Intrigued, I clicked on it, not knowing that the words I was about to read would resonate deeply with me.

The author discussed a common lie many writers believe: “You need to be perfect to be successful.

As I read those words, I felt a sense of familiarity wash over me.

Mazlan, isn’t this exactly what you’ve been struggling with?” I thought to myself.

For years, I had been caught in the perfectionism trap, believing every piece of writing had to be flawless before sharing it with the world.

This mindset paralyzed me, preventing me from expressing my true voice and connecting with my audience.

The article explained how this belief in perfectionism was holding writers back.

It encouraged embracing imperfection and viewing writing as a journey rather than a destination.

Why don’t you try this, Mazlan?” I pondered. “What if you allowed yourself to be vulnerable, to make mistakes, and to grow from them?

Determined to break free from the chains of perfectionism, I decided to take a leap of faith.

I began writing with a new mindset, focusing on progress rather than perfection. At first, it was challenging.

The inner critic would often rear its head, whispering, “This isn’t good enough. You should start over.” But I persisted, reminding myself that growth comes from pushing through discomfort.

I started sharing my drafts with a small group of trusted friends and colleagues, seeking their feedback and support.

Their responses were encouraging and constructive, helping me see my writing from different perspectives.

Mazlan, this is a great idea, but maybe you could elaborate more on this point,” one friend suggested. Another added, “I love your storytelling, but try to connect it more with your main argument.

With each piece of feedback, I felt my confidence grow.

I realized that my fear of imperfection had been unfounded.

People appreciated my authentic voice and the insights I shared, even if they weren’t perfectly polished.

My imperfections made my writing more relatable and human.

One of the most significant breakthroughs came when I wrote an article about my journey in the IoT industry.

I shared my successes, but more importantly, I opened up about my struggles and failures.

Mazlan, are you sure you want to share this?” I questioned myself. “What if people judge you?” But I pushed through the doubt and published the article.

To my surprise, the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Readers reached out to me, thanking me for my honesty and sharing their own experiences.

Mazlan, your story resonated with me. I’ve faced similar challenges, and it’s comforting to know I’m not alone,” one reader commented. Another wrote, “Your article inspired me to keep going, even when things get tough.

This experience taught me a valuable lesson: authenticity and vulnerability are potent tools in writing.

We create deeper connections with our audience when we allow ourselves to be seen as imperfect.

Our stories become more relatable, and our messages resonate more profoundly.

As I continued to embrace this new approach to writing, I noticed a significant improvement in my work.

I felt more liberated, creative, and confident.

The words flowed more easily, and I found joy in the writing process again.

Mazlan, this is what writing should feel like,” I reminded myself. “It’s about expressing your truth and connecting with others, not about achieving perfection.

I also began to apply this mindset to other areas of my life.

In my role as the CEO of FAVORIOT, I encouraged my team to embrace imperfection and view challenges as opportunities for growth.

Let’s focus on progress, not perfection,” I often reminded them during our meetings. “Innovation comes from taking risks, learning from our mistakes, and constantly improving.

This shift in mindset had a positive ripple effect throughout the organization.

We became more agile, open to experimentation, and willing to take bold steps toward our vision.

Our projects flourished, and we built stronger relationships with our clients and partners.

Reflecting on my journey, I realize how crucial it is to challenge the lies we tell ourselves.

The belief in perfectionism had held me back for so long, but I unlocked my true potential once I let go of that lie.

Mazlan, if you could go back in time, what would you tell your younger self?” I often ponder. “I would tell him to embrace imperfection, be courageous, and believe in his voice’s power.

Writing is not just about putting words on a page; it’s about sharing a part of ourselves with the world.

It’s about being vulnerable, authentic, and human.

Allowing ourselves to be imperfect opens the door to growth, creativity, and connection.

So, to all the aspiring writers and storytellers, I offer this advice:

Stop believing the lie that you need to be perfect.

Embrace your imperfections, share your unique voice, and trust that your story matters.

Your journey is valuable, and your experiences can inspire and transform others.

As I continue my writing journey, I carry these lessons with me.

Every word I write and every story I share is an opportunity to connect with others and make a positive impact.

Mazlan, keep pushing forward. Your voice is needed in this world,” I tell myself. And with each piece I write, I strive to inspire others to believe in their potential and embrace the beauty of imperfection.

My journey of overcoming the lie of perfectionism has been transformative.

It has allowed me to grow as a writer, a leader, and an individual. By embracing imperfection,

I’ve discovered the true power of storytelling and the profound connections it can create.

I encourage you to embark on this journey with me, to let go of the need for perfection, and to embrace the joy of authentic expression.

Together, we can inspire, connect, and make a difference.

This article captures the essence of my journey as Mazlan Abbas, blending personal anecdotes, self-dialogues, and reflections to convey the transformative power of embracing imperfection in writing and beyond.

The Thought of Giving Up as an Entrepreneur

A poem

Photo by Gift Habeshaw on Unsplash

In the quiet dawn, dreams softly arise,

Underneath the veil of the morning skies.

Whispers of hope in the early light,

An entrepreneur’s journey, through day and night.

Challenges loom like shadows on the ground,

Yet in every heart, courage can be found.

Dreams may falter, and paths may bend,

But the spirit of resolve will never end.

Through sleepless nights and tireless days,

We forge ahead in countless ways.

Failures teach us, refine our art,

Building resilience, strengthening our heart.

Each setback a lesson, each hurdle a test,

Fuel for the fire that burns in our chest.

When doubt creeps in and spirits sag,

Remember, every summit started as a crag.

Innovation is born from a restless mind,

In the face of adversity, solutions we find.

With every “no” and every door closed,

New opportunities are always exposed.

The weight of the world may press us down,

But we wear determination like a crown.

In the forge of trials, our resolve is tempered,

Our vision clearer, our mission remembered.

For every storm that darkens the sky,

A rainbow awaits when the clouds pass by.

Persistence is the key, patience the lock,

Together, they open the doors we knock.

The road is long, the journey steep,

But in our hearts, our dreams we keep.

Success is not a distant star,

But the courage to keep going, no matter how far.

So when the night is dark and hope seems small,

Stand tall and firm, give it your all.

For in the depths of struggle, greatness grows,

And the seed of success in perseverance sows.

Keep climbing, keep striving, through joy and tears,

Overcoming doubts, conquering fears.

The path of the entrepreneur is never straight,

But every twist and turn shapes our fate.

With every step, no matter how slight,

We inch closer to our guiding light.

So let the challenges come, let the doubts appear,

For we are entrepreneurs, and we persevere.

How To Create Educational TikTok Videos That Are More Engaging

INFLUENCER’S STORIES

Tips that you can steal, too.

TikTok Channel @iotman2030

Creating educational content on TikTok has been an exciting and transformative journey for me.

As someone deeply invested in the Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities, and telecommunications, I’ve found TikTok to be a surprisingly effective platform for sharing knowledge and engaging with a broader audience.

Leveraging my extensive experience and insights in these fields, I’ve embraced this modern medium to reach not only tech enthusiasts and professionals but also the younger generation, who are the future innovators and leaders in technology.

Embracing the Power of TikTok for Education

TikTok, with its massive and diverse user base, offers a unique opportunity to disseminate educational content in a way that is both engaging and accessible.

The platform’s format prioritizes short, visually engaging videos, forcing content creators to distill complex ideas into concise, digestible segments.

This has been particularly challenging yet rewarding for someone like me, accustomed to the more traditional and extensive modes of academic and professional communication.

When I first considered creating educational content on TikTok, I had to overcome a few biases.

Like many, I initially viewed TikTok as a platform primarily for entertainment – filled with dance challenges, comedic skits, and viral trends. “Is this really the place for educational content?” I wondered.

However, I quickly realized that this environment, brimming with creativity and energy, could be harnessed to make learning fun and engaging.

The potential to reach millions with a single video, inspire curiosity, and stimulate interest in IoT and smart cities was a compelling reason to enter this space.

Crafting Engaging and Informative Content

Balancing engagement with information is the key to successful educational content on TikTok.

How do I capture attention quickly and deliver value concisely?” I asked myself.

Each video must capture attention quickly, usually within the first few seconds, and then deliver value clearly and concisely.

TikTok channel @iotman2030

To achieve this, I focused on a few core strategies:

  1. Visual Appeal and Hook: TikTok’s visual nature means that the first few seconds of a video are critical. “What can I use to grab viewers’ attention immediately?” I thought. I use eye-catching visuals, whether it’s through dynamic text overlays, exciting graphics, or real-world footage of innovative city applications.
  2. Simplifying Complex Concepts: IoT, smart cities, or telecommunications can be quite technical. “How can I break these complex ideas into simpler concepts without losing the essence?” I wondered. For instance, when discussing IoT, I might start with a relatable example, like smart home devices, before diving into more technical aspects.
  3. Storytelling: People are naturally drawn to stories. “How can I frame my educational content within a narrative?” I asked myself. Whether it’s a day in the life of a smart city, the evolution of telecommunications, or the future possibilities with IoT, storytelling makes the content more relatable and memorable.
  4. Interactivity and Engagement: TikTok thrives on interaction. “How do I encourage viewers to engage with my content?” I pondered. I encourage viewers to ask questions, leave comments, and suggest topics for future videos. Responding to these interactions builds a sense of community and helps me understand what the audience is most interested in.

Examples of Successful Educational TikToks

One of the most successful TikTok series I created was “The Basics of IoT”.

How do I introduce complex topics in an approachable way?” I asked. In this series, I started with simple definitions and everyday examples, gradually introducing more complex topics like IoT architecture, security concerns, and future trends.

Each video was short, usually around 60 seconds, and ended with a call-to-action encouraging viewers to ask questions or share their thoughts.

Another popular series was “Smart Cities in Action”.

How can I showcase real-world examples of smart city technologies?” I thought.

Here, I showcased real-world examples, from intelligent traffic management systems to smart waste management solutions.

Using actual footage and data, I could visually demonstrate the impact of these technologies, making the content more tangible and impactful.

Overcoming Challenges

Creating educational content on TikTok has its challenges.

How do I condense a 30-minute lecture into a 60-second video?” I often ask myself.

The primary challenge is the platform’s time constraint.

Condensing a topic I usually discuss in a 30-minute lecture into a 60-second video requires meticulous planning and clarity of thought.

Every second counts, and there’s no room for fluff.

Another challenge is maintaining a consistent posting schedule.

I wondered, “How do I balance regular content creation with my professional commitments?” TikTok’s algorithm favors regular content creation, which can be demanding.

To address this, I plan my content in batches, scripting and recording multiple videos in one session and then scheduling their release over time.

Leveraging TikTok’s Features

TikTok offers several features that can enhance educational content.

How can I use TikTok’s features to make my content more engaging?” I pondered.

Duets, for instance, allow users to create content alongside existing videos.

I’ve used this feature to respond to other tech educators, create collaborative content, and even debunk common myths in the tech world.

The “Stitch” feature is another powerful tool. “How can I highlight significant moments from tech conferences and provide commentary?” I thought.

It allows users to clip and integrate parts of other videos into their own.

I’ve used this to highlight significant moments from tech conferences, share interview snippets with other experts, and provide commentary on current tech news.

Hashtags are essential for reaching a broader audience.

I often ask, “Which hashtags should I use to get my content discovered by users interested in these topics?

Using relevant and trending hashtags helps my content get discovered by users interested in those topics.

I often use hashtags like #IoT, #SmartCity, #TechEducation, and #FutureTech.

Measuring Impact and Feedback

One of the rewarding aspects of creating educational content on TikTok is the immediate feedback and interaction.

How can I gauge the impact of each video?” I wondered.

The platform’s analytics provide valuable insights into which videos are performing well, who is watching them, and how they are being received.

Metrics like view count, likes, shares, and comments help gauge the impact of each video.

Engaging with the audience through comments and direct messages also provides qualitative feedback.

How can I use feedback to improve my content?” I thought.

I’ve received numerous messages from viewers who expressed how a particular video helped them understand a concept better or sparked their interest in pursuing a career in technology.

This kind of feedback is invaluable and serves as a powerful motivator.

The Broader Vision

My foray into TikTok is part of a broader vision to make technology education more accessible and engaging.

How can TikTok help bridge the gap in traditional education?” I pondered.

While effective, traditional modes of education often fail to reach a wider audience due to various barriers, such as cost, accessibility, and engagement.

Platforms like TikTok can bridge this gap, providing high-quality educational content for free and in a format that resonates with today’s digital-native generation.

Furthermore, by creating content on TikTok, I aim to demystify technology and inspire the next generation of tech enthusiasts.

How can I spark curiosity and provide foundational knowledge in IoT and smart cities?” I wondered.

IoT, smart cities, and telecommunications are evolving rapidly, and building a knowledgeable and skilled workforce to drive this evolution is crucial.

I hope to contribute to this goal by sparking curiosity and providing foundational knowledge.

Future Plans

I plan to expand my TikTok content to cover more advanced topics and to incorporate more interactive elements.

What new topics and interactive elements can I introduce?” I thought.

Live sessions are one area I’m particularly excited about.

They offer a real-time platform for deeper engagement, allowing immediate Q&A and more in-depth discussions.

Collaborations with other educators and industry experts are also on the horizon.

How can I enrich my content by bringing in diverse perspectives?” I wondered.

By bringing in diverse perspectives and expertise, the content can be enriched further, providing more value to the audience.

Conclusion

Creating educational content on TikTok has been an enriching journey.

It has challenged me to adapt my communication style, think creatively, and engage with a diverse audience.

How can I continue to make a meaningful impact through TikTok?” I often ask myself.

The feedback and impact have been overwhelmingly positive, reaffirming the potential of this platform as a powerful educational tool.

As I continue to explore and innovate in this space, my goal remains clear: to make learning about technology accessible, engaging, and fun.

How can I inspire and educate the next generation of tech enthusiasts?” I wondered.

Whether it’s a high school student curious about smart cities or a professional looking to deepen their understanding of IoT, I hope my TikTok videos inspire and educate, paving the way for a more technologically savvy future.

In this digital age, where information is abundant and attention spans are short, platforms like TikTok offer a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

How can I foster a community of learners and innovators through this medium?” I thought.

By embracing this medium, I’m not just sharing knowledge; I’m fostering a community of learners and innovators who will shape the future of technology.

And that, to me, is the true power of education.

The Power of Momentum

Transforming challenges into opportunities.

Once Momentum Shows Up, Take Advantage of It

Photo by Sunder Muthukumaran on Unsplash

Momentum has always been an elusive yet powerful force.

It is a reminder that opportunities, once they present themselves, must be seized with both hands.

I often think back to the early days of my career, when momentum was not a concept I fully understood.

But over time, I learned that it is about recognizing momentum and leveraging it effectively to propel yourself forward.

In this article, I will share my experiences and thoughts on how to harness momentum.

This reflection is a recollection of past events and a dialogue with myself on the lessons learned and the wisdom gained over the years.

The Early Days: Recognizing Momentum

Photo by Nadir sYzYgY on Unsplash

When I started my career, fresh out of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with a degree in Electrical Engineering, I clearly envisioned becoming a scientist.

My fascination with science fiction, from the vivid adventures in DC comics to the futuristic tales in “The Jetsons,” fueled this dream.

However, the reality of my career path soon diverged from these early aspirations.

Why didn’t I get to study abroad after Form 5?” I would often ask myself.

It felt like a missed opportunity, a moment when momentum could have been seized.

But looking back, I realize that not getting to study abroad was just the beginning of understanding how momentum works.

It was a challenge, a test of resilience. It taught me that sometimes, momentum comes disguised as obstacles.

As an assistant lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, I immersed myself in academia.

Teaching, researching, and contributing to the faculty was fulfilling, but I felt something was missing.

I was waiting for momentum, for that push to take me to the next level.

Transitioning to the Corporate World

Photo by Icons8 Team on Unsplash

The transition from academia to the corporate world took a lot of work.

After earning my Ph.D. in Telecommunications, I joined CELCOM Axiata.

Here, I was exposed to the dynamic world of telecommunications, where I had to adapt quickly and learn new skills.

Is this where I’m supposed to be?” I questioned myself.

The answer wasn’t clear initially, but as I dug deeper into my roles, I began to understand the importance of flexibility and adaptability.

Momentum, I realized, often comes from stepping out of your comfort zone.

At CELCOM, I encountered various opportunities that pushed me to grow.

Each role demanded a different skill set, from R&D to billing and technology to network management.

This period was crucial in shaping my understanding of momentum.

It taught me that to create momentum, one must be willing to embrace change and take on new challenges.

The Turning Point: Leadership at MIMOS and REDtone

Photo by Hunters Race on Unsplash

My tenure at MIMOS Berhad as the Senior Director of the Wireless Communications Cluster marked a significant turning point in my career.

Here, I aimed to elevate the nation’s R&D standards.

However, after eight years, I felt my role had plateaued.

It was then that I faced a critical decision.

Should I stay where I am comfortable or seek new horizons?” This internal dialogue was crucial.

I realized that staying in a stagnant role could stifle my growth.

Momentum needed a new direction.

Taking on the CEO role at REDtone IoT was both exciting and daunting.

Moving from a technical role to a leadership position was a significant leap.

Establishing an IoT-focused subsidiary required vision, strategy, and, most importantly, the ability to inspire and lead a team.

Can I do this? Am I ready for such a challenge?” These questions haunted me.

But I knew that hesitation could kill momentum. I decided to embrace the challenge wholeheartedly.

Leading REDtone IoT was a transformative experience.

Here, I truly understood the power of momentum in driving innovation and growth.

The Birth of FAVORIOT: Embracing Entrepreneurship

Photo by Austin Distel on Unsplash

The decision to co-found FAVORIOT was a culmination of my experiences and a leap of faith.

Starting a business from scratch requires technical expertise, a deep understanding of the market, a clear vision, and the ability to navigate uncertainties.

Am I crazy to leave a stable job to start my own company?” This question lingered.

But the excitement of building something from the ground up was too compelling to ignore.

Momentum was on my side, and I knew I had to take advantage of it.

At FAVORIOT, our mission was to provide comprehensive IoT solutions for businesses seeking digital transformation.

The early days were challenging, with sleepless nights and endless brainstorming sessions.

But the thrill of seeing our ideas come to life kept us going.

Lessons Learned: Harnessing Momentum

Photo by Belinda Fewings on Unsplash

Looking back, there are several key lessons I have learned about harnessing momentum:

1 — Embrace Challenges as Opportunities

Challenges are often the catalysts for momentum. They push you to think creatively and adapt quickly. Every obstacle is an opportunity in disguise.

How can I turn this setback into a stepping stone?” This mindset has helped me navigate many difficult situations.

2 — Be Flexible and Adaptable

The ability to adapt to new roles and responsibilities is crucial. Flexibility allows you to pivot when necessary and take advantage of new opportunities.

What new skills do I need to learn to excel in this role?” Continuous learning and adaptation are essential.

3 — Seize the Moment

When opportunities present themselves, it’s essential to act quickly and decisively. Hesitation can kill momentum.

Is this the right time to make a move?” Trust your instincts and leap.

4 — Build a Strong Network

Networking is vital in creating and sustaining momentum.

Building strong relationships with peers, mentors, and industry leaders can open doors and provide valuable support.

Who can I reach out to for advice or collaboration? Never underestimate the power of a strong network.

5 — Stay Resilient

Momentum can be unpredictable.

There will be highs and lows, but resilience is key to maintaining progress.

How can I stay motivated during tough times?” Focus on your long-term goals and keep pushing forward.

The Future

Photo by Drew Beamer on Unsplash

As I continue my journey with FAVORIOT and beyond, I remain committed to leveraging momentum to drive innovation and growth.

The IoT and digital transformation landscape is fast-moving, and staying ahead requires constant vigilance and adaptability.

What’s next for FAVORIOT? How can we continue to innovate and lead in the IoT space?

These questions keep me motivated and excited about the future.

I also believe in giving back to the community.

As an adjunct professor and speaker at global conferences, I strive to share my knowledge and experiences with the next generation of leaders.

How can I inspire and mentor others?” This question drives my passion for teaching and mentoring.

I want to help others recognize and harness their momentum.

In conclusion, momentum is a powerful force that can propel you to new heights.

It requires recognizing opportunities, embracing challenges, and staying resilient.

My journey has taught me that momentum is not a one-time event but a continuous process of growth and adaptation.

By leveraging momentum, we can achieve our goals and impact the world meaningfully.

Am I ready for the next challenge?

Absolutely.

With each new opportunity, I am reminded that once momentum shows up, we must take full advantage of it.

Have you gained that momentum in you?

As a Writer — How Will Others Find Our Voice in the Crowdest Room

WRITER’S JOURNEY

You don’t need to be the loudest in the room, just the one who touches the heart.

Photo by Alena Jarrett on Unsplash

Every creator seeks that golden moment of viral success, but for most of us, the reality is a relentless hustle — a constant battle to distinguish ourselves amid the digital noise.

In the first week of May, a subtle shift began to unfold. My articles started to gain traction, a sign that I was finally breaking through the formidable barrier of obscurity. It wasn’t dramatic, yet it was significant enough to fuel my confidence.

Is this it? Am I finally getting somewhere?” I pondered, my heart fluttering with a mix of excitement and skepticism.

Photo by Manki Kim on Unsplash

The internet is a crowded marketplace, filled with voices clamoring to be heard. When I first began, my words seemed to dissolve into the abyss of content that fills the web.

It was disheartening.

My writing journey was driven by a desire to share my insights as a tech entrepreneur and to make sense of the rapidly evolving world of IoT. However, understanding the craft of captivating an audience required more than just knowledge; it required heart.

Perhaps it’s not just about informing but connecting,” I realized one evening as I watched the digital stats slowly tick upward.

Storytelling, an art as ancient as time, became my focus. It wasn’t just about delivering facts but weaving them into the human experience.

Photo by saeed karimi on Unsplash

Let me share a secret with you: even in technology, where logic reigns supreme, the human element — the story — is what truly engages.

Why do simple videos of daily activities capture immense attention?

Because they narrate a journey, a transformation from chaos to order, from nothing to something. “Could the mundane details of tech innovation be woven into narratives that resonate on a personal level?” I wondered, my mind racing with possibilities.

I was never a natural storyteller.

My inclination has always been towards data, towards the tangible and quantifiable.

But the digital landscape taught me that the personal touch, the slight vulnerability in sharing successes and stumbles, draws people in.

Photo by DJ Johnson on Unsplash

Mazlan, it’s okay to show the struggles behind the success,” I had to repeatedly remind myself, the internal dialogue pushing me to be more open and genuine.

Here are some strategies that helped me carve out my space in the crowded world of online writing:

  1. Know Your Audience and Yourself: Before you type that first word, think deeply about who you are writing for and what unique perspective you bring. You can’t be everything to everyone, and that’s okay.
  2. Share Relatable Experiences: Even if you think your life or work might not be exhilarating, there’s power in the relatable simplicity of everyday experiences.
  3. Engage from the Get-Go: Your opening lines are crucial. Start with something that hooks your reader — humor, a question, or an intriguing statement.
  4. Create Characters: Even in non-fiction, the people in your stories are your characters. Let your readers see the world through their eyes.
  5. Build Tension with Conflicts: Introduce challenges or conflicts in your narratives. These don’t have to be dramatic; even small hurdles can engage your audience as they await resolutions.
  6. Immerse Your Readers: Use descriptive language to make your readers feel present in the story. Let them hear, see, and feel the environment you’re describing.
  7. Emotion Over Information: While facts are important, the emotional journey keeps readers coming back. Share your triumphs and failures to create a deeper connection.
  8. Be Consistently Present: Growth takes time. Post regularly and maintain a presence that your readers can rely on.
  9. Listen and Respond: Writing online is not a monologue but a dialogue. Engage with your audience, listen to their feedback, and tell them they are heard.
  10. Learn from Every Setback: Not every piece will be a hit. Learn from what doesn’t work and refine your approach.

In writing, just as in technology, adaptation and learning are keys to success.

Every story and article written is a step towards understanding what resonates.

As I celebrate small victories and prepare for the many challenges ahead, I am reminded why I started.

It’s about building something bigger than myself — a bridge between technology and daily life crafted not just with data but with the very essence of our shared human experiences.

So, here’s to the stories yet to be told and to find our voices in the crowdest room.

Remember, you don’t need to be the loudest in the room, just the one who touches the heart.

How to Embrace Courage

INFLUENCER’S STORIES

Fear is a reaction. Courage is a decision.

Embrace courage by avoiding these common fears:

  1. Worrying about being judged by others.
  2. Fearing the opinions of those around you.
  3. Caring excessively about others’ feelings towards you.

In truth, most people are too preoccupied with their own lives to focus on yours.

This phenomenon is known as The Spotlight Effect.

You can’t control the thoughts or actions of others, and it’s a misconception to believe everyone is scrutinizing your every move.

So, let go of these worries.

They aren’t watching as closely as you think.

Freeing yourself from these concerns opens up room for personal growth.

Act in ways that reflect your true values and purpose.

Consider successful individuals; their achievements often stem from their disregard for public opinion.

They thrive because they don’t let the fear of judgment hold them back.

So, let courage lead your way and step forward boldly.

How I Turned Dry Tech Topics into Must-Read Articles

WRITER’S STORIES

My Journey from Academic Papers to Engaging Blogs: 6 Essential Tips

Photo by Shaurya Sagar on Unsplash

Writing articles that captivate and engage readers is an art form I’ve had to master over the years through trial and error.

When I first started sharing my thoughts on gadgets and technology, I didn’t realize how important it was to make my content informative and engaging.

This journey has taken me from academic papers to blogs and now to a broader audience interested in the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities.

I remember the early days of my blogging journey.

I was sitting at my desk, staring at a blank screen. “How do I make this interesting?” I would ask myself.

Who is going to read this?” Over time, I discovered that writing articles people want to read involves a mix of storytelling, practicality, and a touch of personality.

1. Understand Your Audience

One of my first lessons was the importance of knowing who you’re writing for. It might sound obvious, but this step is often overlooked.

I used to write purely from my perspective, focusing on what I found interesting.

But as I dig deeper into blogging, I realized that my audience had different needs and interests.

One evening, while reviewing my blog statistics, I asked myself, “Who are my readers?” “What are they looking for?

I started paying attention to the comments, the most-read articles, and the feedback I received.

It became clear that my audience was not just tech enthusiasts but also professionals looking for practical applications of IoT and insights into smart city developments.

Understanding my audience meant I had to shift my focus.

Instead of discussing the latest gadgets, I explored how these technologies could be applied in real-world scenarios.

This approach made my content more relevant and helped establish a connection with my readers.

2. Start with a Hook

Getting someone’s attention in the first few seconds is crucial.

In today’s fast-paced world, people have short attention spans.

If your article doesn’t grab them immediately, they’ll move on to something else.

I recall an article I wrote about the future of IoT in healthcare. “How do I begin this?” I pondered, knowing the importance of a strong opening.

I decided to start with a personal story — a visit to a hospital where I saw IoT devices in action. “Imagine walking into a hospital where every device is connected, providing real-time data to doctors and nurses,” I wrote.

This hook was engaging and set the stage for the detailed analysis that followed.

3. Use a Conversational Tone

One of the most significant shifts in my writing style was adopting a conversational tone.

I was used to formal writing in the academic world.

However, blogging and writing for a broader audience required a different approach.

How would I explain this to a friend over coffee?” I often asked myself.

This mindset helped me simplify complex topics and make my writing more accessible.

Using a conversational tone made my articles feel like dialogue rather than lectures, which resonated well with my readers.

4. Make it Practical

People love articles that offer practical advice they can apply in their lives.

This realization came to me after I wrote several articles that dug deep into the theoretical aspects of technology but received lukewarm responses.

While writing about IoT deployment strategies, I wondered, “How can I make this more useful?

I began to include step-by-step guides, tips, and case studies.

For example, I didn’t just talk about the benefits in an article about smart city implementation.

I provided a roadmap for city planners on how to get started, from conducting feasibility studies to choosing the right technology partners.

5. Incorporate Visuals

A picture is worth a thousand words, and in the digital age, visuals are more important than ever.

This was a harsh lesson for me.

As someone who loves words, I initially resisted incorporating too many images or infographics.

One day, while revising an article on IoT sensors, I realized how text-heavy it was. “Would I read this if I wasn’t so passionate about the topic?” I asked myself honestly.

The answer was no.

I started adding diagrams, charts, and photos to break up the text and illustrate my points.

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Readers appreciated the visual aids, and they made the information more accessible and digestible.

6. Keep It Concise

While my articles are now more comprehensive, I’ve learned the importance of conciseness.

This may seem contradictory, but even in longer pieces, being concise is about making every word count.

I used to write long-winded explanations, thinking that more words equaled more value.

However, readers often need help to skim through or lose interest. “How can I say this more succinctly?” became a constant question during my writing process.

Trimming unnecessary words and focusing on clarity made my articles more engaging and effective.

Finding My Unique Voice

Beyond these six strategies, finding my unique voice was a crucial part of my journey.

As a professional in IoT and smart cities, I wanted my expertise to shine through and be relatable.

While working late in my office one evening, I reflected on my journey. “What makes my perspective unique?” I asked myself.

The answer lay in my diverse experiences — from academia to industry, local projects to international collaborations.

Embracing these aspects, I started sharing personal anecdotes, challenges, and successes.

For instance, I shared a story from my time at CELCOM Axiata in an article about overcoming obstacles in Billing System migration implementation.

We faced a significant hurdle in integrating a new technology with our existing infrastructure.

By narrating this experience, including the sleepless nights and the eventual breakthrough, I connected with my readers on a deeper level.

They saw not just the expert but a person who had faced and overcome challenges similar to their own.

Building a Community

Writing is not just about creating content; it’s about building a community.

Over time, I realized the value of engaging with my readers beyond the articles.

Responding to comments, participating in discussions, and being active on social media platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter helped me build a loyal readership.

How can I foster a sense of community?” I often asked myself.

I started hosting webinars and live Q&A sessions where readers could interact with me directly.

This boosted my engagement and provided valuable insights into what my audience cared about.

Their feedback became a crucial part of my content strategy.

Embracing Feedback

Feedback, both positive and negative, is a powerful tool for growth.

In the early days, negative comments would discourage me. “Am I not good enough?” I would wonder.

But over time, I learned to see feedback as an opportunity to improve.

Constructive criticism helped me identify areas for improvement. For instance, after receiving feedback that some of my articles were too jargon-heavy, I consciously tried to simplify my language.

How can I explain this in a way everyone can understand?” became a guiding principle.

Positive feedback, on the other hand, reinforced what I was doing right.

Knowing that my articles had helped someone or sparked a new idea was incredibly rewarding and motivated me to keep writing.

Continuous Learning

The world of technology is fast moving, and so is the world of writing.

Staying updated with the latest trends in both fields is essential.

I dedicate time to reading other thought leaders, attending conferences, and participating in workshops.

How can I stay relevant?” I frequently ask myself.

By continuously learning and adapting, I ensure that my content remains fresh and insightful.

This commitment to growth is about staying ahead in my field and providing the best value to my readers.

The Journey Ahead

Reflecting on my writing journey, I’m grateful for the lessons learned and the community I’ve built.

Writing articles that people want to read is not a destination but an ongoing journey.

It requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to evolve.

Every article I write is an opportunity to connect, inspire, and make a difference.

Whether it’s a piece on the latest IoT innovation or a personal reflection on my experiences, my goal remains to provide value to my readers.

What’s next?” I often wonder.

The possibilities are endless, and the journey continues.

With each article, I strive to refine my craft, learn from my audience, and contribute to the ever-growing world of knowledge.

In conclusion, writing articles people want to read is about understanding your audience, starting with a hook, using a conversational tone, making it practical, incorporating visuals, and keeping it concise.

It’s also about finding your unique voice, building a community, embracing feedback, and committing to continuous learning.

This experience has been enriching, and I’m excited about what lies ahead.
