How My Articles Able to Pay the MPP Subscription – (And How You Can Too)

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey

When I decided to join the Medium Partner Program (MPP), I promised it would at least pay for itself.

Today, I’m excited to take you through my exhilarating journey on Medium – a tale of evolving from merely covering the Medium Partner Program (MPP) fees to earning profits that surprised me.

Let me delve into the strategies that transformed my Medium experience, focusing on follows, claps, comments, highlights, replies, and the pivotal role of reading time.

The Humble Start

When I joined MPP, my goal was modest: to earn enough to pay the monthly fee of $5.00.

The early days were a blend of excitement and uncertainty.

My articles, reflections of my experiences and thoughts, seemed like tiny boats I released into the vast ocean of Medium, hoping they’d find their shore.

Turning Followers into a Foothold

Gaining followers on Medium isn’t just about numbers; it’s about building a community.

I realized that each follower represented a potential regular reader, a supporter, and an engager.

So, I started reaching out, not just through my writing but through genuine interactions.

I followed authors whose work inspired me; in return, many followed.

This reciprocity wasn’t just about growing numbers and nurturing a mutual support network.

The Magic of Claps

On Medium, claps are more than just applause; they’re a currency of appreciation.

I learned that clapping for articles wasn’t just a passive action.

It said, “I see your work, and it resonates with me.”

By consistently clapping for articles I enjoyed, I spread positivity and subtly increased my visibility within the community.

Highlighting the Highlights

Highlights on Medium are like shining a spotlight on the parts that speak to you.

I began using highlights to mark phrases or ideas that struck a chord.

This showed authors what I appreciated in their work and helped me remember these golden nuggets.

It’s incredible how a simple highlight can lead to meaningful connections and conversations.

The Power of Comments and Replies

Comments and replies are where the real magic of engagement happens.

I made it a point to leave thoughtful comments on articles I read.

This wasn’t about leaving generic praises but about engaging in meaningful discussions, asking questions, or sharing how the article affected me.

Replies to comments on my articles were just as crucial.

They were opportunities to deepen connections and show my appreciation for readers’ time and thoughts.

Maximizing Reading Time

Medium values the time readers spend on your articles.

I learned that it wasn’t just about getting clicks but about keeping readers engaged.

So, I focused on creating exciting but also valuable and insightful content.

I paid attention to the length of my articles, ensuring they were long enough to provide depth but concise enough to maintain engagement.

The December Surprise

Then came December, a month that broke all my previous records.

My earnings were enough to cover not just one but eight months of MPP fees!

This breakthrough was a testament to the power of consistent engagement and quality content.

It was a joyous reminder that when you invest in the community, the community supports back in you.

Key Takeaways for Aspiring Medium Writers

  1. Build a Community, Not Just a Following: Engage with your followers and follow others genuinely. It’s about creating a network of support.
  2. Clap with Purpose: Show appreciation for others’ work. It’s a simple yet effective way to connect. More claps indicate a standing ovation.
  3. Use Highlights Effectively: Highlight parts that resonate with you in others’ articles. It’s a great way to engage and remember key points.
  4. Engage Meaningfully in Comments: Don’t just read; participate in discussions. Your comments can open doors to new connections.
  5. Value Your Readers’ Time: Create content that keeps readers engaged. Quality and relevance are essential.

Tik Tok vs Writing on Medium – Different Strokes Different Folks

As a newbie content creator, I’ve faced a dilemma that’s probably familiar to many: picking the right platform that truly resonates with my creative spirit and connects with my audience.

My journey, straddling the worlds of TikTok and Medium, has been nothing short of an eye-opener.

Let’s dive into the numbers first.

On TikTok, where I’m known as iotman2030, I’ve managed to gather a cool 5,783 followers.

Over on Medium, things are a bit more humble with 685 followers. But here’s where it gets interesting: my TikTok videos reel in hundreds, sometimes thousands of views, while my Medium articles?

They’re scraping by with just about ten reads daily.

So, why do I keep pouring my heart into Medium when TikTok is clearly the winning horse in terms of engagement?

It’s a tough nut to crack, and it really made me think about the diverse nature of creating content for different platforms.

TikTok: The Fast Lane

On TikTok, everything moves at lightning speed. Crafting a video is super quick, sometimes taking less than a minute.

This platform loves snappy, visually catchy content, and boy, does it deliver instant gratification!

Seeing those views and likes pile up almost instantly is a real rush.

But, trying to make some cash on TikTok? That’s a whole different ball game. The ways to monetize aren’t as clear-cut as you’d think.

Medium: Digging Deeper

Now, Medium is a different beast altogether.

I spend hours, sometimes days, writing articles, engaging with readers, and fostering a sense of community.

It’s not about churning out content. It’s about crafting pieces that resonate with depth and insight.

Medium’s crowd craves quality over quick fixes. The real reward here isn’t in big numbers, but in the meaningful conversations and connections that bloom from each article.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

The audiences on TikTok and Medium couldn’t be more different.

TikTok is like a buzzing beehive of younger folks who dig my IoT edutainment clips.

Medium, on the other hand, attracts a more mature crowd who appreciate a well-thought-out article that offers more than just surface-level insights.

It’s like catering to two different worlds, each satisfying in its own unique way.

Embracing Both Worlds

After much pondering, I decided why choose one when I can juggle both?

Each platform has its perks. TikTok gets my creative juices flowing with its fast-paced vibe, while Medium allows me to connect on a deeper level with my readers.

This dual approach has become my game plan in the diverse landscape of content creation.

The Adventure Continues…

But wait, there’s more!

My journey doesn’t stop at TikTok and Medium.

I’ve also dipped my toes into podcasting and YouTube, exploring different formats and reaching out to varied audiences.

Podcasting lets me dive into lengthy discussions, while YouTube merges TikTok’s visual charm with more substantial content.

It’s all about mixing and matching to see what resonates best.

Nuggets of Wisdom for Budding Medium Writers

If you’re thinking of taking the plunge into Medium, here are some lessons I’ve picked up along the way:

  1. Know Your Battlefield: Medium is all about depth and quality. Make your articles insightful and valuable.
  2. Connect and Converse: Medium thrives on interaction. Engage with your readers and build that community vibe.
  3. Quality is King: Unlike TikTok’s quantity game, Medium values well-crafted pieces. Put in the time to make your articles stand out.
  4. Carve Your Niche: Medium readers love expertise. Find your special corner and own it.
  5. Patience Pays Off: Growing a following on Medium is a marathon, not a sprint. Build trust and credibility steadily.
  6. Spread Your Wings: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Explore different platforms to broaden your reach.
  7. Money Matters: Get to know Medium’s monetization tricks, like the Partner Program, and plan your content strategy around it.
  8. Stay Sharp: Keep up with the latest trends in content creation and evolve your approach accordingly.
  9. Be True to You: Pick topics that you’re passionate about. Authenticity is a magnet for readers.
  10. Diversify Your Portfolio: Treat your social media presence like an investment portfolio. Mix it up for the best overall returns.

In wrapping up, my escapade across TikTok and Medium has been a masterclass in understanding the diverse world of social media.

By embracing the unique flavor of each platform, I’ve learned to navigate the digital realm effectively, striking a balance between reaching out to my audience, engaging them meaningfully, and finding personal fulfillment in the content I create.

Should I Become a TikToker Instead of a Medium Writer

The image was created using Midjourney by Author of Startup Journey.

There’s an exciting twist to my social media followers.

I have only 685 Medium Followers as compared to 5,777 TikTok Followers.

I have less than ten views or Reads daily on Medium compared to hundreds or thousands of views on TikTok.

Here’s my TikTok account – iotman2030

But I have spent hours writing and engaging on Medium daily compared to a couple of minutes (sometimes just under one minute) to create my TikTok content.

And yet, my TikTok has better engagement. However, I still need to monetize it.

So, why the heck am I focusing on Medium?

It took me some time to realize that I still stay at Medium because the content is not the same, and the kind of satisfaction is also different.

Although my TikTok channel can be a form of edutainment, it targets different audiences.

I will never get the same followers or demographics from TikTok as my Medium.

Two different markets and two different kinds of satisfaction.

My followers from TikTok are specific to younger audiences attracted to my IoT edutainment content.

Finally, I decided to maintain both accounts.

And hey! Did I also mention that I am also active on Podcast and YouTube?

That will be another story to tell. Cheers!

No Wonder My Articles Don’t Get Boosted Because I am Using AI to Help Me

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

An entirely generated Medium article using AI is no excuse, but what if I used AI to help perfect my points and turn them into a well-written essay or blog?

Using ChatGPT to help me expand my main points into an article would be okay. But oh boy, I was wrong!

No wonder Medium never boosted my articles on the “For You” tab.

I could get some views, reads, and claps, but it never helps boost what all writers seek.

I have seen many articles by the same writers being boosted almost daily, and I questioned myself — why not me?

Then, I started to Google to find the cause of this issue and found this article — “Medium Says Writers Can Use AI — Under One Condition.”

I’m stumped!

What should I do?

View at Medium.com

How could I churn all those beautiful articles like others?

How do I get the ideas to write a 3–4 minute Medium article?

My native language is not English. How can I overcome this problem?

Well, I will have to write like how I chat with my friends on WhatsApp or social media.

I will use the help of Grammarly to correct my grammar and help with the tone of my voice.

I will write short bites, which are more straightforward than long-winded sentences.

Short paragraphs will be the way to go. It will be more of a one-sentence paragraph article.

For a start, this article is written without the help of AI.

Let’s see how it performs. If it works, I will continue this way.

Okay, good luck to me!

Happy writing!

As a Writer — Steer Away From These W.H.I.N.I.N.G Mistakes

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

Have you ever wondered why some articles grab your attention like a magnet while others float away in the sea of digital content?

What makes you click, read, and stay engaged with a piece of writing?

Could secret traps lurk in the shadows, waiting to snatch away the impact of your carefully crafted words?

Welcome to a journey through the maze of content creation, a world where pitfalls are as common as opportunities.

This comprehensive exploration aims to unveil and dissect the subtle yet significant pitfalls in article writing, encapsulated in the acronym “W.H.I.N.I.N.G.”

  1. Wrong Audience Targeting

One of the fundamental errors in writing is the misalignment with the intended audience.

Understanding your audience is like having a roadmap; without it, your content is likely to get lost in the vastness of the internet.

It delves deep into the strategies for identifying your target audience, understanding their needs, preferences, and pain points, and tailoring your content to resonate with them.

You need to explore how demographic research, reader personas, and audience engagement metrics can guide you to create more targeted and impactful content.

2. Hyperbole Overload

In a bid to capture attention, writers often resort to sensationalism. But there’s a fine line between engaging and exaggerating.

It addresses the risks of overusing hyperbole and sensationalist language.

It’s how credibility and trustworthiness can be compromised by exaggeration and how to strike a balance between being engaging and authentic.

Real-life examples will illustrate how subtlety and nuance are often more potent than overstated claims.

3. Inconsistent Quality

Consistency is the key to building a loyal readership.

Fluctuations in style, tone, or accuracy can be jarring and off-putting to readers.

Here, you must maintain a consistent voice and quality in your writing.

You must cover techniques for developing a consistent writing style, ensuring factual accuracy, and maintaining a steady tone that aligns with your brand or personal voice.

4. Neglecting SEO

In the digital world, being visible is as important as being good.

Ignoring the principles of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can bury your content under the avalanche of online information.

SEO is essential for writers. You must examine how keyword research, understanding search intent, and optimizing content can enhance your article’s visibility and reach.

You must find ways to integrate SEO seamlessly into your writing process.

5. Irrelevant Content

Staying relevant is crucial.

Diverging from the central theme or incorporating irrelevant content can quickly disengage your audience.

Relevance is vital in content creation. It explores strategies for staying on-topic, aligning content with audience expectations, and avoiding the pitfall of including irrelevant information.

You must tactfully weave in diverse perspectives without straying from the core message.

6. No Unique Perspective

In a sea of content, uniqueness is your lifeboat.

Failing to offer a fresh or unique perspective can render your article just another drop in the ocean.

You must explore the importance of bringing a unique angle or insight to your topic.

Try to hone your unique voice, draw on personal experiences or expertise, and present familiar topics in novel ways to make your content stand out.

7. Grammatical Errors

The devil is in the details, and grammatical errors are the nemeses of good writing.

Take note the impact of grammatical precision and the common pitfalls that can undermine your article’s professionalism.

Get the right tools for ensuring grammatical accuracy, the importance of proofreading, and how to effectively use grammar-checking software without losing your personal touch.

Conclusion

In conclusion, steering clear of these “W.H.I.N.I.N.G” mistakes can dramatically elevate the quality and appeal of your articles.

By targeting the right audience, balancing engagement with authenticity, maintaining consistency, incorporating SEO, ensuring relevance, offering unique perspectives, and upholding grammatical standards, you can transform your writing into a powerful tool for engagement and impact.

Remember, effective writing is about what you say and how you say it. With these insights, you’re well on your way to mastering the art of impactful writing.

How the W.I.N.N.E.R Approach Can Transform an Ordinary Writer Into a Literary Champion

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

This is what I need to do to improve myself in 2024.

I need to find a great strategy that I can hold on.

Success is not just a product of innate talent; it’s also about strategy, discipline, and a willingness to grow.

The acronym W.I.N.N.E.R provides an excellent framework for writers aspiring to refine their craft and elevate their work.

Let’s delve into each element of this approach to understand how it can transform an ordinary writer into a literary champion.

View at Medium.com

W – Write Regularly

The cornerstone of improving as a writer is writing regularly.

Consistency in writing practice enhances your technical abilities and keeps your creative juices flowing.

It’s akin to a musician practicing scales or an athlete following a training routine.

Each word you write polishes your skill and helps you find your unique voice.

Setting a daily writing goal measured in time spent (like an hour a day) or word count (500 words per day).

Over time, this consistent practice turns writing from a task into a natural and essential part of your day, akin to a habitual ritual.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

I – Investigate and Research

Good writing is often underpinned by solid research.

Whether you’re penning a fantasy novel, a historical fiction piece, or an article on a current event, understanding your subject sincerely adds credibility and depth to your writing.

Research fuels not just the content but also inspires new ideas and perspectives.

Investigating various sources, from books and journals to interviews and firsthand experiences, ensures that your writing resonates with authenticity and authority.

It’s not just about getting facts right but also about understanding the nuances of your topic, which, in turn, enriches your narrative.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

N – Nurture Ideas

Ideas are the lifeblood of writing.

To nurture them, you should habitually jot down thoughts and observations as they come, no matter how trivial they seem. Keeping a journal or a digital note-taking app handy is a great way to capture these fleeting moments of inspiration.

Brainstorming sessions, where you let your mind roam free without the constraints of logic or practicality, can lead to the germination of remarkable concepts.

Exposing yourself to diverse experiences and perspectives can infuse your ideas with originality and depth.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

N – Notice Details

The devil, as they say, is in the details.

Paying attention to the minutiae in your writing can significantly enhance its quality.

This includes meticulous attention to grammar and punctuation, which are the foundational elements of clear communication.

It also extends to the crafting of characters, settings, and dialogue.

Details transform a generic scene into a vivid, immersive experience for the reader.

They make characters leap off the page as living, breathing entities.

The more specific and intentional you are with your details, the more your writing will resonate with authenticity.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

E – Edit and Revise

One of the most crucial yet often overlooked aspects of writing is the willingness to revise and edit.

The first draft is just the beginning.

Through the painstaking process of editing, good writing is honed into greatness.

Editing involves correcting grammatical errors and reassessing your work’s flow, structure, and clarity.

It’s about being brutally honest with yourself and being willing to cut or rewrite parts that don’t work.

This process, though sometimes painful, ultimately elevates the quality of your writing.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

R – Read Widely

Finally, you must be an avid reader to be a great writer.

Reading widely exposes you to various styles, genres, and voices.

It’s not just about reading in your genre but exploring a broad spectrum of literature.

This exposure informs your understanding of good writing, enriches your vocabulary, and ignites your imagination.

Reading is also a form of passive learning where you absorb narrative structure, character development, and pacing nuances.

Seeing how other authors tackle these elements can be incredibly instructive and inspiring.

The image was created using Midjourney by the Author of Startup Journey.

Embrace W.I.N.N.E.R

Embracing the W.I.N.N.E.R approach is a commitment to continual growth and excellence in writing.

It’s a holistic strategy that addresses the many facets of writing, from the mechanical to the creative.

By writing regularly, researching thoroughly, nurturing ideas, noticing details, editing ruthlessly, and reading widely, you equip yourself with the tools and habits necessary for success in the literary world.

Remember, every great writer was once a beginner who chose to keep writing.

Your journey to becoming a W.I.N.N.E.R in writing starts with embracing these principles and applying them consistently in your quest for literary excellence.

From Medium Reader to Earner – If I Can, You Can Too!

Photo by Julia Joppien on Unsplash

I would like to share a personal milestone in my writing journey – a journey that has taken me from a regular contributor to a monetizing member of Medium’s Partner Program (MPP).

It’s a story of persistence, discovery, and the joy of turning a passion into a self-sustaining venture.

Early Days on Medium (Before October 2023)

My Medium journey started off like many others.

I was an active member, regularly contributing articles and engaging with content across various topics.

However, a persistent frustration was my inability to access many intriguing and valuable articles behind the Medium Partner Program’s paywall.

These articles, rich in insights about entrepreneurship, marketing, social media, writing, and monetization, were tantalizingly out of reach.

This limitation often left me wondering about the wealth of knowledge and lessons I was missing out on.

The Turning Point: Joining the Medium Partner Program

The decision to join the MPP wasn’t made lightly.

I was well aware of the commitment it required, not just in terms of the subscription fee, but also in the need to consistently produce quality content that would engage readers.

The turning point came when I asked myself a pivotal question: Why not make my writing pay for itself?

This led to the condition I set for myself – any decision to join the MPP must be financially self-sustaining.

Success and Insights (October to November 2023)

Photo by Alexander Mils on Unsplash

Since joining the MPP in October 2023, the journey has been nothing short of exhilarating.

In just two months, my earnings from articles exceeded the subscription fees, with more than $8.00 generated in October and over $5.00 in November.

This achievement wasn’t just about the numbers; it was a validation of my belief in the value of my writing and the potential of Medium as a platform for content creators.

The Joy of Self-Sustaining Creativity

What I’ve realized through this journey is the incredible satisfaction that comes from creating content that not only resonates with readers but also supports my passion financially.

It’s a fulfilling cycle: the more I write, the more I earn, and the more I can invest in accessing and learning from the wealth of knowledge shared by fellow Medium writers.

A Message to Aspiring Writers

To those contemplating a similar path, my message is simple: If I can do it, so can you.

Medium is more than just a platform for sharing thoughts – it’s a community of knowledge, growth, and opportunity.

By embracing the challenge of monetizing your writing, you open the door to not just financial rewards, but also to a deeper, more enriching experience on the platform.

Conclusion: Enjoy the Medium Journey!

Photo by Aaron Burden on Unsplash

In conclusion, my journey with Medium has evolved from simply sharing articles to embracing a rewarding cycle of learning, writing, and earning.

This experience has not only empowered my writing journey but also enriched my understanding of various subjects.

So, dive into the world of Medium with enthusiasm – write, learn, earn, and most importantly, enjoy every step of the journey!

Blogging is not just a hobby; it’s a powerful tool for entrepreneurs, writers, and anyone looking to establish an online presence.

I have been blogging for many years.

I started using Blogger as my first platform. It’s not only a single blog site but multiples with different topics.

My blogs covered topics from technical to travelogue.

Later I moved from Blogger to WordPress and began to blog seriously and continuously with custom domain.

Medium is now my latest blogging platform.

This article simplifies and expands upon the process of writing a blog post, drawing from what I learned from various articles.

“Blogging is a conversation, not a code.” – Mike Butcher

Simplified Steps for Writing a Blog Post

  1. Choose a Compelling Topic: Select a topic that resonates with your audience. Your passion and knowledge about the subject should be evident to engage your readers.
  2. Craft an Engaging Title: Your title is your first impression. Make it catchy and intriguing to draw readers in.
  3. Outline Your Ideas: Plan your post’s structure. An outline helps organize your thoughts and ensures a coherent flow of ideas.
  4. Personal Connection: Share your personal connection to the topic. This authenticity builds a bond with your audience.
  5. Clear Layout: Use short paragraphs and bullet points for clarity. A visually appealing layout aids in reader retention.
  6. Write with Passion: Write about what you love. Authenticity in your writing will resonate with your audience and can help overcome writer’s block.
  7. Offer Solutions: Don’t just present problems; provide solutions or insights. This approach adds value to your readers’ experience.
  8. Optimize for Search Engines (SEO): Use relevant keywords and follow SEO best practices to increase your blog’s visibility online.
  9. Proofread: Always review your work. Typos and grammatical errors can detract from your credibility.
  10. Promote Your Blog: Share your posts on social media, guest blog, and use other promotional strategies to increase your reach.

How I Managed to Get 6,000% Audience Growth in 2 Months

Photo by Chris Liverani on Unsplash

It looks like a very big jump.

It looks an impressive feat. But we still need to look at the real numbers.

For a couple of years, my Medium followers did not grow at all.

Most probably, I did not fully engage with others.

But things have changed since September.

Well… in reality is the jump from 1 to 68 new followers, which translates to more than 6,000%!

Although the number is not big the “movement” in the increased number gives an encouragement to me.

No one wants to write an article with no one reading it unless you are writing a personal diary.

View at Medium.com

What Changes?

I did two main things differently:

(1) Posting Regularly:

This time, I tried to post almost daily. At times, it can reach twice daily.

Although I have to admit some of the articles are rewritten from previous articles from my other blogs.

But these re-posts are considered to fill in the gaps when I can’t write something new that day.

(2) Engagement

Engaging with other writer’s posts and commenting will help get yourself to be noticed.

Giving “claps” to the articles and comments will increase your chances of being known by others, too.

I felt very appreciative when I received many “claps” and “comments” notifications on my Medium.

The curiosity will make me know more about the person who gave that clap and comments.

This will increase your chances of being followed.

Do You Have a Target?

How many people do you wish to follow you? Do you have a target for this?

I wish to have ten people daily, but it’s almost five people daily.

It’s still a long way to go, but it’s a relief to see the efforts are worthwhile.

How about you?
